Book Synopsis North American Freight Transportation by : Mary R. Brooks
Download or read book North American Freight Transportation written by Mary R. Brooks and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heightened awareness of North America's vulnerability to terrorism in the aftermath of 9/11 has precipitated a crisis for transport suppliers and cargo owners, one that jeopardizes economic prosperity. Mary Brooks examines one industry sector of the North American economic relationship - transportation services - from the perspectives of transport supplier, cargo owner and policymaker. Ensuring security in international transportation without compromising operational effectiveness is a delicate balancing act. There is concern that economic benefits from NAFTA and the Canada-US Trade Agreement may have been diminished by the current security focus of American officials. The author addresses these concerns, beginning with a history of NAFTA and subsequent continental economic integration. Succeeding chapters provide an economic and regulatory assessment of the North American transport network, and examine key issues for both cargo interests and surface transport suppliers. The issues of perimeter security and growing regionalization are also explored. The author closes with a discussion of North America's transportation future under the Security and Prosperity Partnership. The unique insights of North American Freight Transportation will be of interest to policymakers, those in the transport sector, as well as researchers and practitioners in political science and trade economics.

Book Synopsis Concepts of Transportation Economics by : Barry E Prentice
Download or read book Concepts of Transportation Economics written by Barry E Prentice and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation is the world's largest invisible industry. Modern society is completely dependent on transportation to sustain its way of life, and it is all around us constantly. Yet the economics of transportation is a mystery to most people. Why do air fares rise and fall? Why do urban transit systems struggle to survive and require such large public subsidies? Why does freight transport cost more to move in one direction than an equal distance in another? Why is the government so heavily involved in transportation? Concepts of Transportation Economics provides explanations to these queries and many more, as well-renowned experts in the field, Barry E Prentice and Darren Prokop interpret the unique dynamics underlying transportation through the lens of applied economics, and demonstrate that the operations of transportation are completely logical and obvious once the concepts that underlie business decisions and consumer reactions are explained.

Book Synopsis Transportation Rates and Economic Development in Northern Ontario by : N.C. Bonsor
Download or read book Transportation Rates and Economic Development in Northern Ontario written by N.C. Bonsor and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1977-12-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the influence of transport costs on regional economic development in northern Ontario. It begins with an overview of the Canadian freight rate structure, with emphasis on railway rates, and a brief look at the history of federal rate policy. A theoretical model of rate determination is then constructed to permit measurement of the impact on producers and consumers of alternative rate-setting policies. Using econometric techniques and 1975 data, rate changes are related to the inputs and outputs of northern Ontario’s economy, and the effect on the region of subsidies and regulations is discussed. Freight rates on inbound shipments are found to be much higher than on goods exported from the area. A central discovery is that regulations limiting competition in the Ontario trucking industry have raised highway freight rates significantly beyond the national average. In this situation transport subsidies are unlikely to affect rates, Professor Bonsor argues; the most effective way to lower unduly high freight rates in northern Ontario, he suggests, is to eliminate entry restrictions and promote vigorous competition in the highway trucking industry.
