Book excerpt: Alex Cowie As the twentieth century draws to a close, one of our greatest problems is the availability of energy. One way to study the energy problem is to resolve it into four areas; energy demand, energy sources, transportation of energy from sources to demand centers, and the optimal allocation of energy forms to demands. Each of these areas is extremely complex by itself. When efforts are made to tie them together, for example, to produce a National Policy, the complexities are compounded. Another way to study the energy problem, because of its political and so cial consequences, is to resolve it into geographical areas. Individual prov inces of Canada or states of the United States will have their concerns about energy within their geographical boundaries. As producer, consumer, or both, each wants to ensure an energy development program which will work to the maximum benefit of its citizens. Similarly, countries endeavor to pro tect their citizens and undertake energy policies that will assure either a con tinuation of the existing quality of life or - particularly in the case of "Third World" countries - a marked improvement in quality of life. These competing and conflicting goals call for a study which encompasses the whole world. Again, complexity is piled upon complexity. If the prob lem is not yet sufficiently complex, there is an equally complex question of the effect of energy production and use on the ecology.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Program of Energy Research & Development (PERD) is a federal program that focusses specifically on Canadian energy issues and their impact. PERD funds energy research & development interests in 12 departments. Environment Canada is a key player in PERD, leading the delivery of environmental science & technology specific to energy issues. This publication first indicates how Environment Canada's energy research & development activities jointly benefit both departmental & PERD mandates. It then describes the department's involvement in PERD over 2001-03 at the project level by profiling PERD projects in six sectors: oil & gas, transportation, buildings & communities, industry, electricity, and climate change. For each project, information is included on objectives, methodology, goals, outputs, successes, and funding.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. This in-depth analysis of federal energy policy and politics in the oil and gas sector critically evaluates the National Energy Program, one of the most controversial and wide-ranging policy initiatives in Canadian history - an import case study. Bridging Canadian politics and public policy, the book gives an historical overview of the development of energy policy since 1945, examining the shifts in the balance of power between public and private energy interests. It presents the NEP’s positive and negative impacts on energy policy and the nature of political power.

Book Synopsis Realizing the Energy Potential of Methane Hydrate for the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Realizing the Energy Potential of Methane Hydrate for the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural gas, composed mostly of methane, is the cleanest of all the fossil fuels, emitting 25-50% less carbon dioxide than either oil or coal for each unit of energy produced. In recent years, natural gas supplied approximately 20-25% of all energy consumed in the United States. Methane hydrate is a potentially enormous and as yet untapped source of methane. The Department of Energy's Methane Hydrate Research and Development Program has been tasked since 2000 to implement and coordinate a national methane hydrate research effort to stimulate the development of knowledge and technology necessary for commercial production of methane from methane hydrate in a safe and environmentally responsible way. Realizing the Energy Potential of Methane Hydrate for the United States evaluates the program's research projects and management processes since its congressional re-authorization in 2005, and presents recommendations for its future research and development initiatives.
