Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Seas: An Environmental Evaluation, Second Edition, Volume One: Europe, The Americas and West Africa provides a comprehensive review of the environmental condition of the seas of Europe, the Americas and West Africa. Each chapter is written by experts in the field who provide historical overviews in environmental terms, current environmental status, major problems arising from human use, informed comments on major trends, problems and successes, and recommendations for the future. The book is an invaluable worldwide reference source for students and researchers who are concerned with marine environmental science, fisheries, oceanography and engineering and coastal zone development. - Covers regional issues that help countries find solutions to environmental decline that may have already developed elsewhere - Provides scientific reviews of regional issues, thus empowering managers and policymakers to make progress in under-resourced countries and regions - Includes comprehensive maps and updated statistics in each region covered

Book Synopsis A Century of Maritime Science by : Jennifer M. Hubbard
Download or read book A Century of Maritime Science written by Jennifer M. Hubbard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located on the Bay of Fundy, the St. Andrews Biological Station is Canada’s oldest permanent marine research institution. A Century of Maritime Science reviews the fisheries, environmental, oceanographic, and aquaculture research conducted over the last hundred years at St. Andrews from the perspective of the participating scientists. Introductory essays by two leading historians of science situate the work at St. Andrews within their historical context. With topics including the contributions of women to the early study of marine biology in Canada; the study of scallops, Atlantic salmon, and paralytic shellfish poisoning; and the development of underwater camera technology, A Century of Maritime Science offers a captivating mixture of first-hand reminiscences, scientific expertise, and historical analysis.
Book Synopsis Challenge of Arctic Shipping by : David L. Vander-Zwaag
Download or read book Challenge of Arctic Shipping written by David L. Vander-Zwaag and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990-03-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Arctic Shipping presents a collection of candid essays on the future of Arctic waters. A number of distinguished contributors address critical issues in Arctic development examining the implications for both policy-making in the North and the impact of that policy on native people. The intricacies of decision-making in an atmosphere of uncertainty are explored in detail, as is the impact of access to information, influence, and power. The Challenge of Arctic Shipping also examines activities and events associated with commercial proposals to develop and transport hydrocarbons through environmentally sensitive waters. The editors observe that the resulting political maneuvering is evidence that new approaches to this and other problems of the North are needed.

Book Synopsis Upwelling Systems of the World by : Jochen Kämpf
Download or read book Upwelling Systems of the World written by Jochen Kämpf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upwelling systems are special places in the oceans where nutrient-enriched water is brought into the euphotic zone to fuel phytoplankton blooms that, via marine food-web interactions, create the world’s richest fish resources. This book introduces the reader to the interdisciplinary science of upwelling and provides a comprehensive overview of the world’s most productive marine ecosystems in the context of climate variability, climate change and human exploitation. This material presented is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate study or just for anyone interested to learn about the creation of life in the oceans and how this is compromised by human activities.

Book Synopsis Glacimarine Environments by : J. A. Dowdeswell
Download or read book Glacimarine Environments written by J. A. Dowdeswell and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the processes responsible for sedimentation in modern glaciomarine environments, and how such modern studies can be used as analogues in the interpretation of ancient glaciomarine sequences. Sediments released from glaciers grounded in tidewater, floating ice shelves, ice tongues, icebergs and sea ice form complex sequences governed by glaciological, oceanographic, sedimentary and biogenic controls. Ten per cent of the world's oceans and epicontinental seas contain such active glacimarine environments, but during Cenozoic glacial periods this area was doubled. This book will, therefore, be of relevance to all scientists concerned with high and middle latitude marine environments. The early chapters are concerned largely with processes of sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments; examples are drawn from Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard and Antarctica. Studies of ancient sequences, both Cenozoic and pre-Cenozoic, from the Barents Sea, Greenland, Sweden, Alaska and the northwest European continental shelf, form the latter part of the book.
