Book Synopsis Aleocharine Rove Beetles of British Columbia: A Hotspot of Canadian Biodiversity (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) by : Jan Klimaszewski
Download or read book Aleocharine Rove Beetles of British Columbia: A Hotspot of Canadian Biodiversity (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) written by Jan Klimaszewski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aleocharine beetles are among the most poorly known and difficult-to-identify groups of Coleoptera worldwide. This book presents the first comprehensive synopsis of aleocharine rove beetle species (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from British Columbia, Canada. It is important to generate a structured inventory of species in hotspots of biodiversity like British Columbia, to provide baseline biodiversity data for monitoring species responses related to climate change. It is the first book to treat and illustrate every recorded and new species. For every species, color illustrations are provided, including color habitus and genital diagnostic structures of both sexes. Two hundred and twenty-seven valid species, including 14 new species, 16 new generic records, and 36 (excluding new species) new provincial and 6 state records, in 79 genera and 14 tribes.Tribes and subtribes are arranged in phylogenetic order as it is currently recognized, and genera and subgenera are listed alphabetically within each tribe or subtribe. Species are listed alphabetically or in species groups to better reflect their relationships. Species distribution is listed by provinces and territories in Canada and states in the United States, and the geographic origin of each species is categorized as native, Holarctic, adventive or undetermined (either adventive or Holarctic). Every species is presented with a morphological diagnosis including external and genital characters of both sexes. Collection and habitat data are presented for each species, including collecting period, and collecting methods. A list of all Canadian species with their currently known distribution in North America is presented at the end of the book.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera by : Christopher G Majka
Download or read book Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera written by Christopher G Majka and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿThis volume includes fourteen research articles on Canadian Coleoptera, mainly on the families Staphylinidae, Leiodidae, Histeridae, Nitidulidae, Cucujidae, Phalacridae, Silvanidae, Laemophloeidae, Tetratomidae, several aquatic groups, and others. An introductory editorial traces the history of scientific research and indicates areas of future inquiry. The papers address various questions with respect to the distribution, dispersal, zoogeographical status, phenology, and bionomics of Canadian Coleoptera, the role of saproxylic beetles in forest ecosystems, and invasive species in native habitats. The answers to these questions have important economic and environmental consequences. The book is addressed to coleopterists, ecologists, biogeographers, and conservationists.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera II by : Christopher G. Majka
Download or read book Biodiversity, Biosystematics, and Ecology of Canadian Coleoptera II written by Christopher G. Majka and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes thirteen research articles focused primarily on Canadian Coleoptera. Several taxonomic and biodiversity studies examine groups within the Staphylinidae, Cerambycidae, Gyrinidae, and Haliplidae, describing new species, presenting keys to identification, mapping distributions, and reporting new provincial and national records. Other studies direct their attention to saproxylic beetles as indicators of forest disturbance, and to the beetle fauna of Rhode Island and the larger zoogeographic utility of distributional checklists. An introductory essay discusses a variety of challenges to biodiversity and biosystematics research worldwide. The contents of present volume represent stepping-stones of biodiversity research ? a discipline vital to the future of life on the planet. The book is addressed to coleopterists, taxonomists, ecologists, biogeographers and conservationists.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity in Canada by : Stephen Bocking
Download or read book Biodiversity in Canada written by Stephen Bocking and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clearcut forests, endangered species, national parks, loss of crop varieties: in the last decade the common element of these varied concerns has become widely recognized. These are all biodiversity issues: they relate to the variety of life on Earth and our relationship with it. This relationship is now capturing the attention of activists, scientists, policymakers, and the public, from negotiations at the United Nations to concerns about the neighborhood park. Biodiversity issues raise many questions. How many species are there, and what do they need to survive? How have we learned what we know about biodiversity? What is its value? What policies are needed to protect it? Who participates in protecting biodiversity: governments, industry, activists? This book explores answers to these questions and, in doing so, shows how biodiversity, like other complex environmental issues, can only be understood through the insights provided by many perspecives. The authors contributing to this volume include scientists, historians, anthropologists, lawyers, political scientists, economists, and planners. Together, they provide an interdisciplinary perspective on biodiversity in Canada, especially usefol for undergraduate courses in environmental and natural resource studies, geography, and political science.
Book Synopsis Caring for Canada's Biodiversity by : Canada. Biodiversity Convention Office
Download or read book Caring for Canada's Biodiversity written by Canada. Biodiversity Convention Office and published by Biodiversity Convention Office Environment Canada. This book was released on 1998 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on Canada's experience with respect to the implementation of Article 6 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which stipulates, among other things, that each contracting party shall develop national strategies, plans, or programs for conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. The introduction reviews the nature of Canada's biodiversity, the importance of biodiversity to Canadians, the responsibility for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and the threats facing Canada's biodiversity. It then describes the background to the adoption of the Convention in Canada and the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy, and sets out some of the key challenges faced by Canada in its implementation of the Convention and its national strategy. These are discussed in the areas of science and information for decision making, training and education, legislation and incentives, integration of biodiversity considerations into decision making, and monitoring progress. The final section reviews Canada's experience in international co-operation on biodiversity projects. The annex contains an inventory of initiatives which illustrate the degree to which biodiversity conservation and sustainable use is being incorporated into policies, plans, and programs at the local, regional, and national levels.
