Download or read book Canadian Farm Animal Genetic Resources Conservation written by E. E. Lister and published by The Board. This book was released on 1995 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a concern in Canada about the narrowing genetic base of farm animal species, with the consequent need to consider the conservation of farm animal genetic resources as insurance for Canadian animal industries for the current and future changes in the environment, market demands, and selection goals. This document provides background on the need and importance of the conservation of farm animal genetic resources, and proposes concepts for a national system for conserving such resources. The document outlines international and national programs in germplasm conservation and presents discussion papers on issues related to conservation of farm animal genetic resources. These issues include the setting of conservation priorities, identifying at-risk populations, minimizing inbreeding, gene bank strategies, disease control for conservation, ownership and access of genetic resources, and research needs.

Book Synopsis Animal Welfare and Human Values by : Rod Preece
Download or read book Animal Welfare and Human Values written by Rod Preece and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the most populous province in Canada, Ontario is a microcosm of the animal welfare issues which beset Western civilization. The authors of this book, chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, find themselves constantly being made aware of the atrocities committed in the Society’s jurisdiction. They have been, in turn, puzzled, exasperated and horrified at humanity’s cruelty to our fellow sentient beings. The issues discussed in this book are the most contentious in animal welfare disputes — animal experimentation, fur-farming and trapping, the use of animals for human entertainment and the conditions under which animals are raised for human consumption. They are complex issues and should be thought about fairly and seriously. The authors, standing squarely on the side of the animals, suggest “community” and “belonging” as concepts through which to understand our relationships to other species. They ground their ideas in Wordsworth’s “primal sympathy” and Jung’s “unconscious identity” with the animal realm. The philosophy developed in this book embraces common sense and compromise as the surest paths to the goal of animal welfare. It requires respect and consideration for other species while acknowledging our primary obligations to our fellow humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a delightful book, full of interesting aspects of animal welfare. An excellent guide to the academic study of animal welfare science." —Marian Stamp Dawkins, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford Understanding Animal Welfare: The Science in its Cultural Context takes a completely fresh and thought-provoking approach. It is essential reading for anyone interested, studying or currently working in the fascinating field of animal welfare science. David Fraser places modern-day welfare issues within their historical framework by tracing the evolving ideas that led to current thinking. He also highlights some intriguing issues relating to the contradiction inherent in the term 'animal welfare science' and the practical problem of how to assess emotional states in animals. Special features: Encompasses ideas from a variety of disciplines to give a broad perspective of the topic. Discusses methods of measuring animal welfare and their strengths and limitations. Examines contemporary debates and applications of the science to policy issues. "... an impressive historical narrative of the genesis and growth of animal welfare as a scientific discipline.... The book will be invaluable for anyone involved with animal welfare issues on an academic level or those involved with the integration of these principles into current care and handling issues facing agriculture, companion, laboratory, wild, or zoo animals." —Carolyn L. Stull, PhD, Veterinary Medicine Extension, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis "Fraser offers insights only possible from someone with his considerable experience and understanding." —Dr. Chris Sherwin, Department of Clinical Veterinary Science, University of Bristol This book is part of the UFAW/Wiley-Blackwell Animal Welfare Book Series. This major series of books produced in collaboration between UFAW (The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare), and Wiley-Blackwell provides an authoritative source of information on worldwide developments, current thinking and best practice in the field of animal welfare science and technology.
