Book excerpt: We are thankful to the Lawson Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Public Health Agency of Canada, Kellogg Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for their financial support of the Report Card effort in 2008. [...] Trend analyses over time, along with ongoing refinement and accuracy in data-gathering methods, provide further indication that we need to build on and enhance the good work that is currently underway in order to address the issue of physical inactivity and the related health and development issues emerging among children and youth as a result. [...] However, particularly given rising concerns of increases in chronic diseases and the subsequent demands on our health care system, a proactive and preventative approach to the health and wellness of our children and youth must remain top of mind and on the country's agenda. [...] Active Play home, at school, and in the community INC The objective of the Report Card is to examine the current state of child and youth health in Canada as it relates to physical activity and overweight and obesity. [...] The purpose of the Physical Activity and Inactivity category is to set the stage for the remainder of the Report Card by providing a current snapshot of the overall physical activity patterns of Canadian children and youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the parent of a young athlete is a complex and challenging endeavour. Parents play a pivotal role in the development of young people in reaching their full potential in sport – indeed, the psychological and practical support of parents can be as vital to young athletes as the appropriate coaching and facilities. This book brings together current research into the impact of parenting in youth sport and examines the relationships between athletes, coaches and parents, whilst also discussing topics such as parenting styles, behaviour at competition and talent development. This book not only outlines the theories of parenting in youth sport, but also utilises research and examples from several countries, including the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. It has a research-to-practice theme and includes numerous suggestions for research projects (and getting research published). Parenting in Youth Sport is an essential text for students, lecturers and practitioners with an interest in youth sport, sport psychology or sport development.

Book Synopsis The Objective Monitoring of Physical Activity: Contributions of Accelerometry to Epidemiology, Exercise Science and Rehabilitation by : Roy J. Shephard
Download or read book The Objective Monitoring of Physical Activity: Contributions of Accelerometry to Epidemiology, Exercise Science and Rehabilitation written by Roy J. Shephard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the new knowledge that has been gained from the objective monitoring of habitual physical activity by means of pedometers and accelerometers. It reviews current advances in the technology of activity monitoring and details advantages of objective monitors relative to physical activity questionnaires. It points to continuing gaps in knowledge, and explores the potential for further advances in the design of objective monitoring devices. Epidemiologists have studied relationships between questionnaire assessments of habitual physical activity and various medical conditions for some seventy years. In general, they have observed positive associations between regular exercise and good health, but because of inherent limitations in the reliability and accuracy of physical activity questionnaires, optimal exercise recommendations for the prevention and treatment of disease have remained unclear. Inexpensive pedometers and accelerometers now offer the epidemiologist the potential to collect relatively precisely graded and objective information on the volume, intensity and patterns of effort that people are undertaking, to relate this data to past and future health experience, and to establish dose/response relationships between physical activity and the various components of health. Such information is important both in assessing the causal nature of the observed associations and in establishing evidence-based recommendations concerning the minimal levels of daily physical activity needed to maintain good health.

Book Synopsis Play, Physical Activity and Public Health by : Stephanie A. Alexander
Download or read book Play, Physical Activity and Public Health written by Stephanie A. Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are children playing less than they used to? Are rising obesity rates linked to a decline in children’s time to play freely? These and other related questions have filled the pages of newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals for the past decade. Researchers and journalists have attributed these issues to societal changes around children’s lives and leisure, the growth of structured and organised activities and increasing perceptions of risk in children’s play. Play, Physical Activity and Public Health presents a discussion of the way modern notions of play are rendering children’s leisure activities less free and less engaged in simply for fun. Based on original qualitative research, and analysis of contemporary media from Canada and elsewhere, this book argues that the growing health concerns around childhood play entail a paradox: by advocating, promoting, discussing, and re-directing children’s play, a new form of children’s leisure is emerging - one that is purpose-driven, instrumentalised for health, and ultimately, less free. We explore how play has become goal-oriented, a means to health ends, and how the management of pleasure in play as well as diverse risk discourses around play continue to limit and constrain possibilities for children and families to play and engage in leisure freely. Incorporating past critiques of this trend in play, we argue for research and practice to create new possibilities and ways of thinking about children's play, leisure, fun and childhood, that are less constrained and managed, and importantly less geared towards health goals. This is a valuable resource for students of the sociology of sport, kinesiology, sports and health psychology, education, public health, and childhood studies. It is also an important read for school teachers, public health practitioners, psychologists, physical education teachers, academics and parents interested in how children’s leisure lives are being shaped by the growing and diverse discussions around play.

This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership Experience for Academic Directions (LEAD) is a program that was developed as a service learning program for teacher candidates in preparation for the teaching career. As youth populations continue to diversify and as the issues impacting youth continue to surface, it is the responsibility of educators, administrators, and the governments to provide all the opportunities for youth to succeed academically, socially, and personally. Teachers especially are instrumental in making this happen; therefore, it is imperative that teachers come into the profession with the cognitive and non-cognitive skills to motivate youth to succeed. The Handbook of Research on Leadership Experience for Academic Direction (LEAD) Programs for Student Success s a critical scholarly book that explores the many facets of the teaching profession as they relate to working with at-risk youth and helping them reach their full potential. This book provides the groundwork for programs that will succeed at the K-12 education level and at the teacher education level. Featuring a range of topics such as human capital, mental health, and social learning theory, this book is essential for academicians, teaching professionals, administrators, professional development educators, policymakers, researchers, and students.
