Book Synopsis Canada's Community Colleges by : John D. Dennison
Download or read book Canada's Community Colleges written by John D. Dennison and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges evolved in Canada during the "golden years" of educational innovation between 1960 and 1975. A diversity of factors - historical, socio-economic, political and educational - contributed to the development of college systems with distinctive goals and structures. This book is the first up-to-date and comprehensive study of a potent national educational and social phenomenon, largely unknown and largely unappreciated. The authors describe provincial and territorial college systems as they have evolved to 1985, discussing problems particular to each system and evaluating the extent to which often idealistic early goals have been realized. They identify key issues which are critical to the future of these systems and which, if ignored, will undermine community college education across Canada. These include accessibility, identity, relations with governments, management and leadership, and evaluation and accountability. In each case the authors draw upon their own expertise and experience to describe directions for resolution of these issues. The book contains a comprehensive and topical bibliography of both published and unpublished material related to many aspects of Canadian community college development. It also includes a French language bibliography. Unique in many aspects, this book is designed to interest both graduate and undergraduate students in adult and higher education and administration as well as those directly involved in community colleges, government education ministries and a broad lay public.

With contributions by leading scholars, it addresses such topics as leadership, entrepreneurship, new forms of organization, accountability, instructional methodology, the emergence of a college culture, and education of First Nations students. Key questions are explored. How are differences in collective and individual interests to be managed? How can social, economic, and demographic realities be taken into account in managing the 'intangible capital' of education? What are the best ways of ensuring opportunities for education, training, flexibility, and varied access and mobility within higher education systems?

Book excerpt: This book presents key features, attributes and defining characteristics of Canadian Community Colleges and Institutes of Technology and the lessons they offer to developing countries in Asia. Internationalization initiatives of Community Colleges suggest that partnerships in skills and human capital development are possible in countries at various stages of development and are in fact the hallmark of successful global economies. The publication draws lessons from the Canadian approaches while suggesting that no model can simply be transplanted to Asia and the Pacific. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines seven higher education organizations, exploring their interconnected lines: organizational change and organizational stability. These lines are nested within historical, social, cultural, and political contexts of two nations—the US and Canada—two provinces and three states: Alberta, British Columbia, California, Hawai’i, and Washington. The author studies the development of the community college and the development of the university from community college origins, bringing to the forefront these seven individual stories. Addressing continuity and discontinuity and identity preservation and identity change, as well as individual organizations’ responses to government policy, Levin analyzes and illuminates those policies with neoliberal assumptions and values.
