Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports the proceedings of the Institute conference, which examines Canada's stake in expanding economic ties across the Pacific. The main conclusion emerging from the conference is that recent proposals for Pacific economic cooperation are widely perceived as motivated by desires for a new trade bloc. Instead, however, the current focus of Pacific economic cooperation is directed toward promoting progress in the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations. In light of common concerns about unilateral trade actions by the U.S. and the European Community, strengthening the multilateral trading system is a key priority shared by Canada and other Pacific economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of this report is to examine Canada's shrinking presence in the Asia-Pacific region in light of the trade & investment opportunities there, and to make recommendations for a new Asia-Pacific policy aimed at reinvigorating Canada's ties with the region. The introduction reviews the work of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Trade Disputes & Investment in preparing the report. Chapter 2 examines recent trends in economic growth, reform, & integration in the region, as well as some of the trade opportunities in specific sectors, and makes the case for increased trade & investment. The final chapter outlines the Subcommittee's recommendations in three categories: removing barriers to trade & investment; creation of an environment to enable pursuing closer economic ties; and the federal role in helping the Canadian business community succeed in the region. Appendices include background information on Asian economic reforms, intra-regional trade agreements in Asia-Pacific, and the Canadian trade & investment relationship with the region. It also includes dissenting opinions about the report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia Pacific Face-Off is the thirteenth in the Canada Among Nations series published by The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. In recognition of the government's designation of 1997 as Canada's Year of Asia Pacific, the volume focuses on aspects of Canada's relations with the countries in this region. During 1997 Canada will host the annual Leaders Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and a number of apec ministerial meetings. As many of our contributors suggest, Canada has not yet acquired much of a presence in the Asia Pacific region, and we have some distance to go before our status as an Asia Pacific nation is taken seriously by our APEC partners. The high profile of Team Canada missions should not be mistakenly interpreted as evidence of concerted Canadian policy with respect to Asia Pacific. In terms of educational or economic linkages with the countries of APEC, Canada could take lessons from Australia, a country whose policies our authors compare with Canada's.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Region: Other States, grade: A, Webster University, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses Canadian foreign policy within the framework of emerging Asian markets and the diversification of Canadian energy resources. Using Robert Putnam's (1989) two-level game theory, it identifies why Canada has been prompted to shift its focus to Asia and what domestic and international factors challenge Canadian foreign policy goals. This paper discusses these issues in the context of Canada strengthening its relations in the Asia-Pacific in general, as well as its ability to diversify its top export - oil and natural gas - to energy hungry Asian markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "International trade and investment are central to economic prosperity. But new global realities, including rising antitrade sentiment, are challenging long-held policy approaches in these areas. With the global trading system at a critical juncture, now is the time to examine new trade realities and explore appropriate responses. In this volume, the culmination of a comprehensive interdisciplinary research initiative, the Institute for Research on Public Policy has brought together groundbreaking contributions from more than thirty experts in eight different countries. Together, they analyze how longer-term changes and emerging trends in international commerce, technology and economic power are affecting Canada, and what these changes mean for public policy. The authors take an in-depth, firm-level look at Canada's trade, and assess its integration in global value chains. They provide a rigorous analytical framework, supported by new empirical evidence, that will help readers better understand the global economy. Among the topics they examine are the new business models driving the more fragmented and global nature of production; the technological developments that are allowing new traders to expand their reach; and the shift in economic activity toward emerging markets that is dispersing power and raising new challenges for trade negotiations. The editors' conclusion distills the research findings into a forward-looking policy agenda for more inclusive trade." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a big deal in the making. With the Doha Round of multilateral trade negotiations at an impasse, the TPP negotiations have taken center stage as the most significant trade initiative of the 21st century. As of December 2012, negotiators have made extensive progress in 15 negotiating rounds since the talks began in March 2010, though hard work remains to finish the deal in the coming year or so. Despite this effort, however, the TPP is not well understood. In part, the reason lies in the dynamism of the TPP initiative. Unlike other free trade pacts, the growing membership as the talks have proceeded and the broad range, complexity, and novelty of the issues on the agenda have made it difficult to track the substantive detail and progress of the talks. This Policy Analysis aims to remedy this problem by providing a reader's guide to the TPP initiative. It first assesses how much the TPP countries are alike and like-minded in their pursuit of a comprehensive trade deal. It then examines the current status of the talks, the major substantive sticking points, and the implications of Canada and Mexico joining the talks as well as prospective membership of other countries. The Policy Analysis then looks ahead to how the TPP could advance economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region and the implications for trade relations with China.
