This collection shows the durability, the vividness, and the astonishing productivity of a sector of history which is the stronghold of the history-lover rather than the professional historian. For each book included, the compilers have weighed its contribution to local history and regional history rather than the style in which it is written—narrative, memoir, descriptive study, or novel. It is this criterion of selection that has permitted the retention of several general histories of a varied nature—Bouchette, Charlevoix, Nicholas Denys, La Potherie, Lescarbot, Hanotaux, Sulte, etc.— where local and regional life takes on a major importance for reasons of order in history, method, or quite simply because local life is the principal object of the study itself. Book excerpt: The nine essays in this posthumous volume are linked by a recurring theme - an affirmation of the integrity and viability of the small society and culture in the economic blocs and political federations of the modern world. Alexander maintained that there was an economic base for the provinces of Atlantic Canada in the resources of the region and the genius of its people. In these essays he launched an assault on the beliefs that hindered the develpment of that base while searching for policies necessary to sustain that society. He indicated Canadian trade policies. He stated that neither the date nor the fact of entry into Confederation offered an economic panacea for any of the Atlantic provinces - but that the question of political and economic accmmodation within the larger federation was critical. Alexander's study of the rise and decline of the shipping industry in Atlantic Canada in the nineteenth century revealed a regional industry with resources, capital and entrepreneurial talent to compete successfully in international trade. It also reinforced his belief that subsequent regional disadvantages grew as much from institutional and political factors as from the unimpeded operation of comparative advantage and market forces. The volume pleads for a stronger federalism based on the belief that the survival of the Canadian Confederation depends upon the rebirth of pride and self-respect among Canada's diverse peoples. These essays are part of that heritage and that rebirth.

They produce more than one-half of Canada's manufactured goods, one-quarter of her output from mines and forests, and one-third of the farm income. Accompanying this economic pre-eminence is a majestic primeval geography. Ontario extends through sixteen degrees of latitude and a distance of over 1600 kilometres from barren tundra along a saltwater shoreline in the north to fertile lowlands bordering freshwater lakes in the south. Productivity and size, two of the basic elements in the geography of the province, stand in contradiction to one another. The former is concentrated in a very small area with an identity and even a name of its own, 'Southern Ontario,' a portion of the province that is as overwhelming in its concentration of activity as the remainder is in its areal extent. The recognition of this distinction is a prerequisite to the further study of a subject which has been widely neglected, both in Ontario and in the rest of Canada. Writers and artists, historians and geographers have paid little attention to the province. It is a baffling region, one which 'has achieved a significant place in the Canadian sun, but no one quite knows what the place is, even though other areas would like to achieve the same position' (Warkentin 1966). The purpose of this short volume is to contribute to an understanding of Ontario, to point out something of what it is both to those who are already acquainted with the province and to those who are being introduced to it for the first time.
