Book Synopsis Happy for No Reason by : Marci Shimoff
Download or read book Happy for No Reason written by Marci Shimoff and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-03-03 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone wants to be happy--yet so many people are unhappy today. What are they doing wrong? Clearly, a new approach is needed. Self-help guru Shimoff presents three new ideas and a practical program to change the way readers look at creating happiness in their lives: 1. Happiness is not an emotion, a spike of elation or euphoria, but a lasting, neuro-physiological state of peace and well-being. 2. True happiness is not based on what people do or have--it doesn't depend on external reasons or circumstances. 3. Research indicates that everyone has a happiness set-point. No matter what happens to a person, they will tend to return to a set range of happiness. This book shows how you can actually reprogram your set-point to a higher level.--From publisher description.
Book Synopsis How Can You Eat That? by : Lily Johns
Download or read book How Can You Eat That? written by Lily Johns and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lily Johns began life as a confident, happy child but in her teenage years started to suffer from lack of self-esteem and confidence. This spiralled into anorexia and depression that held her captive from her teenage years to her early 40s. She was never able to speak to anyone who had recovered from anorexia because the system never gave her the opportunity. She therefore never believed that recovery was possible. This harrowing but ultimately uplifting book charts her descent into a world of distorted and delusional thinking, years of well-meaning treatment that did little to get to the root of the problem, and the turning-point that put hope back on the agenda. Lily, who describes herself as being in remission from the illness, tells her story with unflinching honesty. When she found it hard to communicate because of the barrage of negative thoughts, she began to draw: the results allowed outsiders a glimpse of what she was going through, and many of them are reproduced in this book. This is the ideal book for parents, siblings, friends, partners, carers or nurses who want a better understanding of the anorexic mind, as well as offering hope to fellow sufferers.

Download or read book Unfair to Genius written by Gary Rosen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long and tortured career of Ira B. Arnstein, "the unrivaled king of copyright infringement plaintiffs," opens a curious window into the evolution of copyright law in the United States. As Gary A. Rosen shows in this frequently funny and always entertaining history, the litigious Arnstein was a trenchant observer and most improbable participant in the transformation of not just copyright, but of American popular music itself. A musical prodigy in the late nineteenth century, Arnstein performed as a boy soprano at the famous 1893 "White City" exhibition in Chicago. He grew up to be a composer of moderate accomplishment, but by the mid-1920s his fortunes had reversed in the face of changing tastes and times. Embittered and confused, he became convinced that he was the victim of a conspiracy to steal his music and set out on a three-decade-long campaign to prove it, suing most of the major players in the popular music industry of his day. Although Arnstein never won a case, Rosen shows that the decisions rendered ultimately defined some of the basic parameters of copyright law. His most consequential case, against a dumbfounded Cole Porter, established precedents that have provided the foundation for successful suits against George Harrison, Michael Bolton, and many others. Unfair to Genius alternates the stories of Arnstein and a colorful cast of supporting characters with a fascinating account of the economic, technological, and legal forces of the first half of the twentieth century that shifted the balance of power from the mercenary music publishers of Tin Pan Alley to the composers and lyricists who wrote the Great American Songbook.
