It explores the structural constraints on township governance and the way that these constraints influence the day-to-day behavior of Chinese rural grassroots government leaders. Based on thoroughgoing interviews with township and village cadres and villagers, the book depicts how individual actions affect and are affected by the underlying institutional arrangements and hence captures the dynamic micro functions of grassroots government as well as macro evolutions of overarching political institutions in China. The down-to-earth presentation of this book engages readers to deeply feel the genuine life and dilemmas of cadres at the rural grassroots levels in China. The goal of this book is to analyze the fiscal standing, power structure and public service functions of township governments in the context of its subtle relationships with upper level governments as well as with sub-level villages and the rural grassroots society. Its comprehensive documentation and in-depth discussion provide the best depiction of rural governance in contemporary China.

Book excerpt: In the rapidly evolving landscape of digital governance, government chatbots have emerged as pivotal tools in reshaping interactions between citizens and public institutions. As governments increasingly adopt AI-driven solutions to streamline services, these chatbots play a crucial role in transitioning from traditional, human-centric consultations to more efficient, automated processes. Understanding how these AI systems impact user satisfaction and effectiveness is essential for optimizing digital government platforms and ensuring they meet the nuanced needs of contemporary societies. Digital Government and Public Interaction: Platforms, Chatbots, and Public Satisfaction delves into the transformative role of AI-driven chatbots in modern government services. It examines the shift from traditional human consultations to digital interactions, focusing on how these changes impact public satisfaction. This publication advances understanding of AI-driven services and integrates theories from public administration, sociology, psychology, and information management. Additionally, the book provides practical insights for government agencies to enhance digital services, improve response quality, and better address public needs. By analyzing both the supply-side efforts of government and the diverse demands of users, this book will prove to be a valuable resource for academic researchers, government practitioners, educators, and professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A conceptual and analytical framework for understanding economic institutions and institutional change. Markets are one of the most salient institutions produced by humans, and economists have traditionally analyzed the workings of the market mechanism. Recently, however, economists and others have begun to appreciate the many institution-related events and phenomena that have a significant impact on economic performance. Examples include the demise of the communist states, the emergence of Silicon Valley and e-commerce, the European currency unification, and the East Asian financial crises. In this book Masahiko Aoki uses modern game theory to develop a conceptual and analytical framework for understanding issues related to economic institutions. The wide-ranging discussion considers how institutions evolve, why their overall arrangements are robust and diverse across economies, and why they do or do not change in response to environmental factors such as technological progress, global market integration, and demographic change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conceptually synthetic and empirically rich book demonstrates the vulnerability of democratic settings to authoritarianism and populism. Six scholars from various professional fields explore here the metamorphosis of a political party into a centralized authoritarian system. Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party needed less than ten years to accomplish this transformation in Hungary. In 2010, after winning a majority that could make changes in the constitution – two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, they evolved and stabilized the system, which produced again the two-thirds majority in 2014 and 2018. The authors reveal how a democratic setting can be used as a device for political capture. They show how a political entity managed to penetrate almost all sub-fields of the economy to arrive at institutionalized corruption, and how the centralized power structure reproduces itself. With the help of a powerful empirical apparatus—among others analyses of more than 220,000 public tenders, redistributions of state subsidies, and the interconnectedness of those privileged with the political elite — the authors detail the functioning of a crony system and the network aspects of political connections in the rapid enrichment of politically-linked businesses. Their studies demonstrate the role of political capture in this redistribution and how this capture leads to a new social stratification.
