Book excerpt: In studying the transient behavior of phase conjugation via four wave mixing, it has been noted that very short probe pulses invariably produce considerably broadened conjugate pulses unless the conjugator is inordinately short. The present investigation was therefore undertaken to determine whether a short conjugate pulse might be produced by judicious programming of the probe. It was found that the probe can indeed be tailored to produce an arbitrarily short conjugate signal and, if the conjugating medium exhibits linear absorption, then the total energy in the probe signal is finite. The required probe programming can be determined by numerical evaluation of a Fourier transform.

We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Dynamic Holography Group, Institute of Physics. National Academy of Sciences as follows: The contractor will investigate getting the largest possible phase conjugate reflectivity in Sn2P2S6 by optimizing the usual parameters (such as pump intensity ratio, signal to pump intensity ratio, angle of incidence for pump and probe waves, polarization of interacting waves, orientation of waves with respect to sample principle axes) and frequency shift, a new parameter of special importance of Sn2P2S6. To achieve this the contractor shall perform the following: (1) The backward wave from four wave mixing will be used to generate the phase conjugate waves. Optimum conditions will be found to accomplish this. (2) Study different self-phase conjugate mirrors based on various coherent optical oscillators Optimize the performance of a double phase conjugating mirror. The study shows that SPS crystal can be efficiently used for conjugation of coherent light beams both in traditional backward-wave four-wave mixing geometry and in self-pumped coherent oscillator geometries. The samples belonging to Type I are suitable for conjugation both in the red (He-Ne laser light) and in near infrared (Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns) while samples of Type II can be used for red and shorter infrared (0.8 ... 0.9 microns) region of spectrum. The phase conjugate intensity twice as large as the signal intensity was easily achieved in the red, at lambda = 0.63 microns. It is inevitable that with the same sample and the same refractive index modulation the phase conjugate reflectivity in infrared diminishes as lambda per 2 with the increasing lambda. This decrease can be compensated for by increasing the thickness of the samples used, what is essentially technological and not physical problem. With the available samples we got 17% phase conjugate reflectivity for Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns radiation.

Book excerpt: This book is written from an industrial perspective and provides a detailed discussion of solid-state lasers, their characteristics, design and construction. Emphasis is placed on engineering and practical considerations. The book is aimed mainly at the practicing scientist or engineer who is interested in the design or use of solid-state lasers, but the comprehensive treatment of the subject will make the work useful also to students of laser physics who seek to supplement their theoretical knowledge with engineering information. In order to present the subject as clearly as possible, phenomenological descriptions using models have been used rather than abstract mathematical descriptions. This results in a simplified presentation. The descriptions are enhanced by the inclusion of numerical and technical data, tables and graphs. This new edition has been updated and revised to take account of important new developments, concepts, and technologies that have emerged since the publication of the first and second editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical phase conjugation, or time reversal, of an optical wave front is an important technique to correct distortions in electromagnetic waves which are built up during propagation through a medium. The authors have studied theoretically optical phase conjugation through four-wave mixing in a slab of non-linear material. When two strong counter-propagating laser beams irradiate a non-linear crystal, the third-order susceptibility is activated, and can couple to an external weak probe field. A four-wave mixing process then generates a phase-conjugated or time-reversed replica of this incident probe field. They investigated the mechanism of the production of phase-conjugated radiation in such a configuration by solving the non-linear Maxwell equations for the electric field. The electric field in the material satisfies a set of two coupled wave equations, which couple positive and negative frequency components of the electric field. It is shown that the polarisation of the pumps and the tensorial nature of the interaction can be accounted for by a simple polarisation operator in the wave equations. Maxwell's equations for the field in the layer admit plane-wave solutions, although the dispersion relations are very different from the usual linear relation between the frequency and the wave number. The coupling between the two waves exhibits a strong resonance near the frequency of the pump beams. These plane-wave modes can be matched across the boundaries of the layer to the probe field. The response of the material can then be expressed in terms of Fresnel reflection and transmission coefficients for both s- and p-polarisation. We have derived simple matrix equations for the set of Fresnel coefficients, which can be solved numerically, and the have also obtained closed-form analytical solutions for the various Fresnel coefficients. It is indicated that our solutions reduce to earlier results in the appropriate limits.

Book excerpt: Rapid development of optoelectronic devices and laser techniques poses an important task of creating and studying, from one side, the structures capable of effectively converting, modulating, and recording optical data in a wide range of radiation energy densities and frequencies, from another side, the new schemes and approaches capable to activate and simulate the modern features. It is well known that nonlinear optical phenomena and nonlinear optical materials have the promising place to resolve these complicated technical tasks. The advanced idea, approach, and information described in this book will be fruitful for the readers to find a sustainable solution in a fundamental study and in the industry approach. The book can be useful for the students, post-graduate students, engineers, researchers and technical officers of optoelectronic universities and companies.
