Book excerpt: The man of our time does not know how to pray, writes the French theologian Jacques Ellul, "but much more than that, he has neither the desire nor the need to do so. He does not find the deep source of prayer within himself. I am acquainted with this man. I know him well. It is I, myself." Out of this common experience, the prominent social critic and former resistance leader makes a searing analysis of man's alienation from God, and traces the reasons for praying or not praying. With razor-like statements, he cuts through the weaknesses of much traditional praying and, in the end, offers a strong and positive program for praying in today's troubled times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of Jewish men's voices in prayer—to strengthen, to heal, to comfort, to inspire from the ancient world up to our own day. "An extraordinary gathering of men—diverse in their ages, their lives, their convictions—have convened in this collection to offer contemporary, compelling and personal prayers. The words published here are not the recitation of established liturgies, but the direct address of today's Jewish men to ha-Shomea Tefilla, the Ancient One who has always heard, and who remains eager to receive, the prayers of our hearts." —from the Foreword by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, DHL This collection of prayers celebrates the variety of ways Jewish men engage in personal dialogue with God—with words of praise, petition, joy, gratitude, wonder and even anger—from the ancient world up to our own day. Drawn from mystical, traditional, biblical, Talmudic, Hasidic and modern sources, these prayers will help you deepen your relationship with God and help guide your journey of self-discovery, healing and spiritual awareness. Together they provide a powerful and creative expression of Jewish men’s inner lives, and the always revealing, sometimes painful, sometimes joyous—and often even practical—practice that prayer can be. Jewish Men Pray will challenge your preconceived ideas about prayer. It will inspire you to explore new ways of prayerful expression, new paths for finding the sacred in the ordinary and new possibilities for understanding the Jewish relationship with the Divine. This is a book to treasure and to share.

Book excerpt: In this book, a totally new picture of five million years of human evolutionary history is presented. Male and female hominids lived separately in different areas for most of the last five million years. They met together once a year and stayed together for a brief period. What they did for and during this annual mating season is the key to the proper and correct understanding of human evolution. Five million years ago, the last common ancestors of the African great apes and humans lived in an extensive rain forest encompassing a river and a lake. There was a system of mountains, a lake and a river, all of which were linked together. Ever since then, mountains, rivers and lakes were intimately involved with humankind. When the climate turned arid, the riverside forest broke into fragments of small forests. In desperate need of food, the last common ancestors were forced to visit the trees which dotted the river shore. They developed a unique mode of terrestrial locomotion to move between the main forest and the scattered patches of forest. One day, during drought, a small group of apes ventured to a faraway tract of forest beside the river. On the road, they were caught in heavy rain and in the resulting frenzy, they lost their way back home. During their wanderings, they evolved into gorillas. Almost at the same time, another small group of apes met the same fate, and evolved into chimpanzees. As the climate grew increasingly arid, the year divided itself into dry and wet seasons. During the dry season, males were forced to remain in the nearby mountain ranges because there weren't enough food in the home forest to support both males and females. As a result, malesand females parted ways during the annual dry season. These were the ancestral hominids, who evolved into australopithecines. Two and a half million years ago, as the climate became incresingly arid, the forest surrounding the lake began to break up and disappear. Finally, the female hominids, the inhabitants of the forest at the margin of the lake, were forced down to the ground. They became fully terrestrial, but they did not know where to find food and water. Consequently, females began to follow herds of Hipparion horses. Later, they switched to one-toed horses. Following these migrating horses, some hominids ended up in East Asia from Africa about 2 million years ago. In the same fashion, some hominids later wound up in Europe. In the meantime, male hominids developed and acquired unique behavior. As rain began to fall, they went downstream to their courting ground. There, they beat the ground with sticks to attract and seduce mates. They beat pebbles, sand, the bones of dead animals or anything else on the ground, leaving behind piles of fractured, dented, and broken bones. These stone debris are erroneously called Oldowan tools by archaeologists and anthropologists. Rain was so important to our remote ancestors because the rain was a harbinger of the brief annual mating season. They prayed for the coming of rain as the climate became arid. They prayed earnestly by beating the ground with sticks in their place of courtship. In due course, hominids became prayers. Later as rain began to fall irregularly, the rain lost its foremost importance. Instead, the horse ascended in importance. Now, males prayed for the coming of the horse, accompanied by their mates. About 32,000 years ago, Upper Palaeolithic Europeans began to pray for the coming of the horse by carving, engraving and painting horses on the cave walls. Painting was simply another version of prayer. The same was true for language. Human language was developed out of verbal prayer. In this book, the common thread running through the entire history of human evolution is crisply and clearly explicated. The origins of construction, music, sculpture, handicrafts, painting and languages are all clarified as variations of the same theme. That theme was prayer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is in the field of trans-cultural psychology, and is intended for college courses in anthropology and psychology, and general readership. the book focuses on intriguing facts about primitive cultures around the world, and provides insights into living traditions and different world views. a principal theme of the book is that we can gain a better understanding of ourselves by a "detour" to other cultures. the book shows how modern ways of thinking are parallel to those of primitive cultures, and engages readers to become more aware of who they are. As shown throughout the book, there is not, after all, a very wide gulf between primitive and modern cultures. the book covers many topics including animism, shamanism, totemism, hunting and cultivation rituals, altered states of consciousness, envy and the evil eye, how people deal with conflicts, potlatches, cargo cults, how people satisfy the need for social approval, culture-bound syndromes, folk medicine, treatment of women, raising of children, nomadic peoples, treatment of the dead, and other topics.

Book excerpt: The key to unleashing a wave of meaningful prayer in your life, challenging us to live daily on our knees, Prayerless Praying can awaken your passion for God and teach you how to revive a dwindling prayer life. Every religion incorporates some form of prayer, meditation, and teaching. This book will not teach you how to pray, but it will invite you to see the need for prayer in your life. Indeed, prayer is a power tool in the hands of a person of faith. Do not allow yourself to be a helpless bystander while your life is derailed before your very eyes. Take action, be proactive, pray! Establishes and shines the unbroken principle spoken by Jesus that Without God we can do nothing therefore Man ought always to pray. - -Asaph Mukandila M., senior pastor of Light of Life Community Church

Book excerpt: Living Your Divine Life takes you beyond the monumental "peak experience", beyond priceless "enlightenment", and beyond human thought- to effortless living, nonstop miracles, God- conscious (Christ-in-us) reality, and ceaseless joy as your natural state. Before we learned to walk or feed ourselved with a spoon, we have to acquire these now second nature "information-processing" skills that originate beyond the conscious mind. Equally, if we want to realize the highest state of our being, happiness and prosperity, we can also bring these second nature (effortless, source code) skills into our daily lives. This mathematical source code, which scientists call the laws of nature, is the DNA of life or the software of God's inner structure. Living Your Divine Life shows you how to access that second nature "source code" on a constant basis. The words of Moses Jesysm Muhammad, Eistein, Bohr, Bohm, Wheeler, the Buddha, and many others reinforce this truth. We can observe "effortless" living in the inner workings of our own body and in the movements of electrons, stars and galaxies. By Living Your Divine Life, you can experience peace beyond peace and absolute knowledge at the center of yourself- by unfolding the Godhead within splendor of yourself.
