Mavis Howard thought she was happy. She certainly wasn’t looking for epiphanies or personal transformation, but when her husband suddenly announces that he’s leaving her for another woman—one able to give him the child that she could not—she can’t help but start re-evaluating her entire life. She doesn’t like what she sees. So, after a cathartic awakening leaves her energized and present in her own body, in ways she’s never experienced before, she leaves everything behind to start a new life, in a new place, with no expectations or obligations beyond simply being true to herself—whatever that might look like. Settling down in Saskatoon, Mavis soon finds herself opening up to the world around her in novel ways as she begins to explore both her new home and her own heart. Then something inside of her shifts. Before long, her life is full to overflowing with rich emotions and poignant memories—none of them her own. As her collection of stories and entrusted treasures grows and starts to take on a life of its own, in ways no one could have predicted, Mavis finds herself torn between the desire to remain open and receptive to other people—and the need to protect herself.

Download or read book Going Green written by Laura Pritchett and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never mind the Ph.D. and middle-class trappings—Laura Pritchett is a Dumpster diver and proud of it. Ever since she was old enough to navigate the contents of a metal bin, she has reveled in the treasures found in other people’s cast-offs. For Going Green, Pritchett has gathered the work of more than twenty writers to tell their personal stories of Dumpster diving, eating road kill, salvaging plastic from the beach, and forgoing another trip to the mall for the thrill of bargain hunting at yard sales and flea markets. These stories look not just at the many ways people glean but also at the larger, thornier issues dealing with what re-using—or not—says about our culture and priorities. The essayists speak to the joys of going beyond the norm to save old houses, old dishwater, old cultures, old Popsicle sticks, and old friendships—and turning them into something new. Some write about gleaning as a means of survival, while others see the practice as a rejection of consumerism or as a way of treading lightly on the earth. Brimming with practical and creative new ways to think about recycling, this collection invites you to dive in and find your own way of going green.
Book Synopsis Piecing It All Together by : Kathleen Lindsey
Download or read book Piecing It All Together written by Kathleen Lindsey and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piecing it all Together: A Collection of Memoirs depicts various events in my life. The book symbolizes my lifelong story pieced into my imaginary quilt. God and his grace is the strong doubled threads that helped piece my quilted blocks together into a God-given masterpiece. Many years ago, God gave me a special gift - the art of quilt making. In my autobiography, I reveal how I have pieced my sometimes-difficult life together. As a child, I always wanted answers to questions like, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” I was born in the Baby Boomer era, which was a time when children were seen and not heard. As an adult, I have become a voice of utterance through my deliverance in which God has set me free! Through the years I have faced many unpredictable and grievous encounters. I lost my mom at the age of six. When my son was killed by a drunk driver, I wanted to be angry with God, “Why God, why my son? There are so many bad people in this world, Lord.” But He sent me a comforter, the Holy Spirit. I faced many difficult times during my life. Times when I was hungry, the time when I almost drowned, multiple times I was overcome by carbon monoxide, received beatings so much that it broke my spirit, and other occurrences that young children or adults should not have to suffer for the sake of pleasing others. As a young bride I encountered numerous marital problems. Eventually prayer and perseverance made our marital union grow stronger. My faith in God helped me to rise above my difficult dilemmas. He was always there beside me and guiding my footsteps. Today, I enjoy the pleasures and satisfaction of events that life brings. I chose joy! Being a child of God, daughter of the King, and woman of faith, I thank Him every day for loving me, forgiving me, helping me to forgive others, and bringing me comfort and joy in my darkest hours. I thank Him for lifting me up with laughter and joy when I am overwhelmed with love and happiness. He is a Mighty Good God!

Book excerpt: Valiant Be is a remarkable memoir of pain and resilience, and a gripping history of a family that is at once dysfunctional and deeply loving. Heather’s earliest memories revolved around her parents’ purchase and refurbishment of a gristmill beside the Don River, on the outskirts of Toronto. As World War 2 raged, so did tensions at home; Heather’s father was a passionate artist with a mercurial temper, and her mother was a writer who wrote and published a book about their marriage. Although Heather’s young life was chaotic, she learned resourcefulness from her parents, and never doubted their care. Then, at the age of four, Heather experienced a deeply traumatic incident that would change her forever and lead her to spend fifteen years in therapy for complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Still, her courage never wavered. Told through a series of vignettes, this vibrant collection of stories follows the author through childhood, university, marriage, mothering, teaching, and working as a calligrapher. Tender, revelatory, and always full of humour, this book is both a valuable time capsule and a fascinating look at how drastically the world can change in a single lifetime.
