Book excerpt: Richard Malone and Caroline Sue Miller are born on the same day to parents who live on opposite sides of the societal fences in a small coal-mining town of western Pennsylvania. Despite the economic differences between their families, the two children become best friends, and their unexpected friendship eventually blossoms into forbidden love. In order to be together and escape their bleak, small town opportunities, they leave the security of their homes and settle in New Jersey where their future is a blank slate. As Richard and Caroline make their way through life, their choices often veer their love off course, but the bond they share has deep roots that continually pull them together again. This tale of family, friendship, and love incorporates the historical events and cultural changes of the tumultuous 1900s while following the course of one couple whose connection is stronger than class or circumstance. Whether youre sailing through youthful days or enjoying your golden years, Reflection of Memories will capture your heart and remind you of what is truly important in life.

In the Carolina Upstate, thousands of men and women have shared a common experience through Winthrop Universityas traditions, classrooms, and campus. Although a picture may be worth a thousand words, it is a voice relating personal experiences that truly provides a clear vision of the past. In Winthrop University: Memories and Traditions 1886a1945, these voices take center stage, recounting stories that illuminate and celebrate the universityas diverse history, from its founding in 1886 to the mid-twentieth century. Throughout this volume, readers will trace the evolving Winthrop experience across a very different landscape than today, a time of different customs and etiquette based on a more rigid formality. However, within this world, the young female students at Winthrop still found many opportunities for fellowship and fun, whether it be a midnight aturkey trota on the eve of the twentieth century or the annual May Day festivities. These narratives, combined with over 100 black-and-white images, transport readers across the changing decades and highlight some of the schoolas most historic moments, such as the its relocation from Columbia to Rock Hill.

I have done something similar here with "Memories of Cornell College, 1957-1962", it is also nostalgic-historic and I reflect on my time at Cornell, some memories pleasant enough, others not so pleasant. In one of the final scenes of "Cambridge Spies", a non-fiction BBC presentation of the story of a small group of privileged Englishmen who betrayed their country and the Allies and spied for the Soviet Union from the 1930's - 1950's, Anthony Blunt, one of the men in question and Professor of Art History at the University of London at the time, was walking down a busy London street. Someone who recognized him said, "Mr. Blunt, I believe. Yes, you were at Cambridge with Philby, Burgess and McClain. How are they? Went on to bigger and better things, I imagine?" Blunt hesitated, then smiled and replied, "Yes, bigger and better things." At the time Burgess and McClain had just escaped to the Soviet Union, Philby was in the process of catching a midnight steamer from Beirut to Odessa and Blunt was to be revealed, then stripped of his Knighthood and ridiculed publicly. The men I focus on in this book were not spies; in fact one, Captain Ron Zinn lost his life in a firefight in Viet Nam in 1965 and another, Colonel Jerry Huml served in the RVN twice and had a distinguished U.S. Marine Corps career, but, yes they all did without question go on to bigger and better things - things which make Cornell look very good. Dorr, Zinn, Robison, Beamer, Weeden, Sunderlage, Hilmer, Taylor, Huml, Altenberg and others- yes, bigger and better things! This book is about life on the Hill Top over 50 years ago, as I saw it, and its impact on me later. Dave Adkins

Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art review and critical evaluation of research into 'flashbulb' memories. The opening chapters explore the 'encoding' view of flashbulb memory formation and critically appraise a number of lines of research that have opposed this view. It is concluded that this research does not provide convincing evidence for the rejection of the encoding view. Subsequent chapters review and appraise more recent work which has generally found in favour of the flashbulb concept. But this research too, does not provide unequivocal support for the encoding view of flashbulb memory formation. Evidence from clinical studies of flashbulb memories, particularly in post-traumatic stress disorder and related emotional disturbances, is then considered. The clinical studies provide the most striking evidence of flashbulb memories and strongly suggest that these arise in response to intense affective experiences. Neurobiological models of memory formation are briefly reviewed and one view suggesting that there may be multiple routes to memory formation is explored in detail. From this research it seems possible that there could be a specific route for the formation of detailed and durable memories associated with emotional experiences. In the final chapter a cognitive account of flashbulb memories is outlined. This account is centred on recent plan-based theories of emotion and proposes that flashbulb memories arise in responses to disruptions of personal and cultural plans. This chapter also considers the wider functions of flashbulb memories and their potential role in the formation of generational identity.

It describes his education and his career at Rice University and the University of North Carolina. During his career, he travelled to do geologic work in all continents except Antarctica. The book also discusses his heavy involvement in the education of women, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, following his introduction to the education of women during the late 1960s when he was in charge of a women's residential college at Rice university. Many episodes on campus and during travel were both strange and hilarious. The book emphasizes the humor in the author's life by describing these episodes both from the author's viewpoint and the perspective of other people involved.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together distinguished scholars to address broad societal claims about the surge in populist nationalism in the scholarly literature on collective memory. The book sets the stage by examining historical origins and case studies of populism and nationalism in the United States before exploring these phenomena in the global context. Next, the book establishes conceptual frameworks for approaching nationalism and populism in national narratives through the literature on collective memory, political psychology, history, and international studies. The book concludes with a discussion on common themes uncovered over the course of the book. Throughout each section, the book uses empirical evidence and conceptual claims to shed light on the rise in global populist nationalism in a thoughtful, comprehensive manner for scholars of a wide range of backgrounds. National Memories offers a multidisciplinary, modern approach to an old global societal challenge in a time of great political and social upheaval.

Together the family found a way to keep going even in the darkest of times. How Do I Draw These Memories? is a graphic novel memoir about nostalgia, faith, the preciousness of life, and unconditional love. From Jonell's devastatingly brilliant pen as a writer and an artist, it plumbs the depths of what family can be, and how joy and hope can be found in the most ordinary and extraordinary moments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories of My Town is an exploration into how town dwellers experience their environment in a complicated way. As people in urban milieus relate themselves to the environment, this takes place on many levels, where especially the time level becomes problematic. The urban buildings and settings can be looked upon as a kind of collective history, as carriers or witnesses of times past. But it is only the town dwellers that experience urban time itself, the time they live in, but through their memories also times past. In this past some elements take symbolically dense expressions. Through reliving and narrating their experiences the symbolically important factors in this urban relationship will be outlined for investigations concerning three towns, Helsinki, the capital, Vyborg, the ceded and lost Karelian town, and Jyväskylä, a town with dense commercial and cultural dimensions in the middle of Finland. The aim of the book is to use different theoretical concepts as guidelines in analysing the different narrative texts.
