Book excerpt: Ernestine has never been camping before, but she’s sure it will be lots of fun . . . won’t it? An endearing story about a girl’s first experience with the great outdoors. My aunt Jackie invited me to go camping with her and my cousin Samantha this weekend. I’ve never been camping before, but I know I will love it. Ernestine is beyond excited to go camping. She follows the packing list carefully (new sleeping bag! new flashlight! special trail mix made with Dad!) so she knows she is ready when the weekend arrives. But she quickly realizes that nothing could have prepared her for how hard it is to set up a tent, never mind fall asleep in it, or that swimming in a lake means that there will be fish — eep! Will Ernestine be able to enjoy the wilderness, or will it prove to be a bit too far out of her comfort zone? In an energetic illustrated story about a first sleepover under the stars, acclaimed author-illustrator Jennifer K. Mann reminds us that opening your mind to new experiences, no matter how challenging, can lead to great memories (and a newfound taste for s’mores).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the real campers? Through-hiking backpackers traversing the Appalachian Trail? The family in an SUV making a tour of national parks and sleeping in tents at campgrounds? People committed to the RV lifestyle who move their homes from state to state as season and whim dictate? Terence Young would say: all of the above. Camping is one of the country's most popular pastimes—tens of millions of Americans go camping every year. Whether on foot, on horseback, or in RVs, campers have been enjoying themselves for well more than a century, during which time camping’s appeal has shifted and evolved. In Heading Out, Young takes readers into nature and explores with them the history of camping in the United States.Young shows how camping progressed from an impulse among city-dwellers to seek temporary retreat from their exhausting everyday surroundings to a form of recreation so popular that an industry grew up around it to provide an endless supply of ever-lighter and more convenient gear. Young humanizes camping’s history by spotlighting key figures in its development and a sampling of the campers and the variety of their excursions. Readers will meet William H. H. Murray, who launched a craze for camping in 1869; Mary Bedell, who car camped around America for 12,000 miles in 1922; William Trent Jr., who struggled to end racial segregation in national park campgrounds before World War II; and Carolyn Patterson, who worked with the U.S. Department of State in the 1960s and 1970s to introduce foreign service personnel to the "real" America through trailer camping. These and many additional characters give readers a reason to don a headlamp, pull up a chair beside the campfire, and discover the invigorating and refreshing history of sleeping under the stars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 19th century, camping out emerged as an avenue for women's engagement with nature and provided access to an assortment of athletic pursuits, including hiking, hunting, fishing, swimming and boating. This volume of the Sports She Wrote series features 64 articles (134,000 words) written by women from 1879 to 1900, accompanied by 50 images, offering firsthand accounts of camping experiences, showcasing life in the great outdoors as a respite from the pressures of the new and expanding urban lifestyles that many women found suffocating. Informative narratives describe exploring national parks, family excursions with children, practical necessities of outdoor life, proper attire and walking tours through nature’s wonders, including Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, the Rockies and the Ozarks. Sources include Outing Magazine, The Ladies’ Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly and The San Francisco Examiner. Contributors include Juliet Wilbor Tompkins, Minna Caroline Smith, Kate Masterson, Mary Sargent Hopkins, E. Pauline Johnson's column on outdoor pastimes, and Jessamy Harte on camping in the Adirondacks. An illuminating series of letters and articles published in Forest and Stream magazine in 1879-1880 offers historical insights into the challenges faced by wives of avid outdoorsmen. Eighteen of the articles were published in a short-lived “Women’s Column” that may have been discontinued due to sensitivities expressed by male readers. Through these eloquent narratives, camping transcends mere outdoor activity, becoming a journey of self-discovery and camaraderie among women and families, celebrating those who embraced the wild retreat and established camping out as an enduring popular escape from social restrictions. Sports She Wrote is a 31-volume time-capsule of primary documents written by more than 500 women in the 19th century.

Your family got together, possibly taking the family dog along, got into the car and departed in that direction, a bit like USS ENTERPRISE, but this time going where so many families have gone before. Your parents knew exactly where you would be doing the camping, because they knew the best camping sites from experience and personal knowledge. Camping for most of us meant swimming, barbecues outside, sing-along around a campfire, with the crickets and katydids chirping away merrily in joyful companionship, and then somebody who had a really wicked sense of humor would start telling eerily terrifying and creepy stories, well chosen to make every single hair and hackles at the back of your neck rise in horror terror and panic! And then you need somebody to accompany you to your tent, as you creep shivering into your sleeping bag, mouth dry and totally unable to sleep, knowing full well, that nightmares are going to follow you, for quite a while afterwards. Especially the Cat Goddess, the lady in black, the Were tiger, who was once an accursed Egyptian priest and so on! And you promise yourself, that if you get through the night, safe and sound, you are going to wake up in the morning and strangle that wicked storyteller. Let me admit, I happen to be one of those human horrors, with a good stock of terrible, horrible tales, garnered from all around the world, since childhood, and half of them were learned in scouting/guiding camps, and then on camping trips with friends, their families, and colleagues.
