Book excerpt: Handsome cowboy Palmer Haas returns from a long spell in wine country and ends up back at his daddy’s Stockton County ranch in Oklahoma. His father Bill is glad to have him under his care again, but he rarely gets to see Palmer because he travels on ranch business throughout the country, selling horses. Carson Foxxe, a hardworking hand at Haas Ranch, doesn’t miss a trick when it comes to the ranch owner’s handsome son. In fact, he’s all eyes-opened and over-the-top interested in Palmer, maybe a little too much. As August along the prairie grows longer, Palmer welcomes a campfire cowboy friendship with Carson. Carson is warned by a fellow coworker not to get involved with Palmer because it could ruin his future at the ranch. Fools are born every day, though, and Carson becomes more than a friend to Palmer. There’s a big problem at Haas Ranch now. Bill has a major rule that prevents Palmer from being friends or lovers with any of the ranch hands, Carson included. Has Carson already fallen head over boots for the wrong cowboy? If so, what is he going to do? Carson will have to hang onto his bronco man because his ranch ride is about to get bumpy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Adams' The Log of a Cowboy has long been acknowledged a classic of western American literature. Hoffman Birney, in the New York Times Book Review, once declared, "If there is such a thing as an all-time 'best' Western, that is it." One of the most delightful features of the Log is the inclusion of tales told by the cowboys at night. Adams was a master of the campfire tale, and the fifty-one collected here, each told by an Andy Adams character, touch upon every aspect of range life. Readers will never forget characters like Bull Durham, Uncle Dave Hapfinger, and Aaron Scales, or the tale of the tubercular drifter whose death caused tough cowboys to cry, or the gruesome account of the hanging of the renegade Kansas lawman, or the humorous incident of the "big brindle muley ox" that decided to ride instead of walk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 100 recipes celebrating the cowboy lifestyle, plus cooking secrets, photos & stories from real cowboy cooks, ranchers & locals across North America. Life in the saddle, on the trail, and in the outback has forged a style of living that cowboy-turned-chef Grady Spears calls the Cowboy Way. In Cooking the Cowboy Way, he takes you on a journey around the country to amazing places full of food, history, and people who have an appreciation for the land. These places where life and living (and that always includes cooking and eating) come alive in the spirit of the cowboy. In Cooking the Cowboy Way, you’ll have a ringside seat at the rodeo as Grady wrestles down new recipes from some incredible cowboy cooks and kitchen wranglers who know what hungry cow folks want to eat. And in the process, you’ll be carried away by the magic of starry nights by the campfire and seduced by the heritage of the chuck wagon and ranch kitchens, where the menus are still stoked by the traditions of the Old West just as they have been for a century or more. Cowboys live life by a simple code that is shared through their rustic lifestyles and the delicious recipes found in Cooking the Cowboy Way. Cowboy cooks, ranchers, and locals from across North America share their recipes, cooking secrets, photos, and stories about their unique and proud way of life. From the Lone Star State to the Grand Canyon State, and from Florida to Alberta, Canada, cowboys have a way with the land and the food that comes form it. Each chapter focuses on a different location, including the Wildcatter Cattle Ranch in Graham, Texas; the Bellamy Brothers Ranch in Darby, Florida; the Homeplace Ranch in Alberta, Canada; Rancho de la Osa in Tucson, Arizona; and more. Praise for Cooking the Cowboy Way “Cooking the Cowboy Way is not a guide to old-fashioned ranch and trail grub. And that’s a good thing. The book is an homage to the cowboy legacy, which Spears finds evolving on the nation’s ranches.” —Dallas Morning News “[Grady Spears and June Naylor] went all over the country, with a heavy emphasis on Texas, of course, drawing inspiration from cooks on and around ranches large and small. They then took these recipes and adapted them for regular kitchens and modern uses (i.e., dinner parties and backyard cooking). The results sound great.” —Texas Monthly

Dr. Jones has let his view of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west inspire him to think and imagine how these stories would be told in Florida Cracker Country.

Book excerpt: The storyteller spins a web of fantasy while the campfire sends a shower of sparks leaping into the night sky to drift among the ancient stars. It is in this manner that the history of mankind has been passed from one generation to the next. In North America the native people formed their cultures and spiritual beliefs through stories. Stories described the origins of earth and mankind, of floods, fires, hunts, wars, heros, the supernamral, myths and legends. Young people knew what had happened in the world because their elders communicated it to them around the campfire. The first Europeans to make their way among the Indians were mountain men who told fantastic and mystifying tales of great cities to the east and other worlds that existed across the great shiny waters. Each successive wave of white invaders brought with it a different blend of fact and fiction. In today's world it might appear that campfire stories can no longer compete with movies and television. But no special effect can ever come close to the power and impact of human imagination. Try reading or telling a story around the campfire. Watch the faces of your listeners and know the value and significance of keeping alive our time-honored traditions of oral history.
