Book Synopsis The Scandal of the Gospel by : Charles L. Campbell
Download or read book The Scandal of the Gospel written by Charles L. Campbell and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its shocking incongruities and transgressive forms, the grotesque offers an intriguing lens for exploring the scandal of the gospel and the challenges of Christian preaching. Drawing on diverse sources—from Swedish crime fiction and contemporary poetry to James Cone, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Pussy Riot—this book will examine the theological, homiletical, and social implications of a grotesque gospel for contemporary preachers. The book focuses on three aspects of preaching and the grotesque: (1) the ways in which a grotesque gospel unsettles the preacher and challenges the "false patterns" that often shape Christian preaching; (2) the importance and challenges of resisting the weaponized grotesque, which dehumanizes people and furthers the power of dominant groups; (3) the incarnate Word as the carnivalesque, grotesque body of Jesus, which calls the church to become the porous and inclusive body of Christ. The Scandal of the Gospel is the written adaptation of Yale Divinity School's Beecher Lectures, given by Charles Campbell in 2018. The last chapter, "Preaching and the Environmental Grotesque," is a new addition.

Book Synopsis More Than Pretty by : Erica Campbell
Download or read book More Than Pretty written by Erica Campbell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammy Award–winning gospel singer, television star, and radio host Erica Campbell speaks to women of all shapes and sizes and “takes the time to dissect and reveal the beauty that exists in being our authentic, vulnerable selves” (Sarah Jakes Roberts, author of Don’t Settle for Safe) and celebrating the person God made you to be. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be pretty. But Erica Campbell believes we were made to be so much more. As so many women struggle with issues of low self-esteem, depression, and unhealthy habits, Campbell offers a spiritual path that cuts through the highly commercialized, hypersexualized media messages of popular culture, leading women to the true meaning of “pretty” and the true self God wants them to be: empowered, confident, loving, and real. Erica uses her own personal and professional triumphs and failures and the stories of others to help motivate women to redefine and develop true beauty based on biblical principles. With inspirational prose, she shows us how to overcome childhood struggles, push past fears, sharpen our spiritual IQ, and free ourselves from guilt, shame, and low self-confidence. More Than Pretty is a stirring call to action for all women to a life full of power and purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Little Piece Of Ground will help young readers understand more about one of the worst conflicts afflicting our world today. Written by Elizabeth Laird, one of Great Britain’s best-known young adult authors, A Little Piece Of Ground explores the human cost of the occupation of Palestinian lands through the eyes of a young boy. Twelve-year-old Karim Aboudi and his family are trapped in their Ramallah home by a strict curfew. In response to a Palestinian suicide bombing, the Israeli military subjects the West Bank town to a virtual siege. Meanwhile, Karim, trapped at home with his teenage brother and fearful parents, longs to play football with his friends. When the curfew ends, he and his friend discover an unused patch of ground that’s the perfect site for a football pitch. Nearby, an old car hidden intact under bulldozed building makes a brilliant den. But in this city there’s constant danger, even for schoolboys. And when Israeli soldiers find Karim outside during the next curfew, it seems impossible that he will survive. This powerful book fills a substantial gap in existing young adult literature on the Middle East. With 23,000 copies already sold in the United Kingdom and Canada, this book is sure to find a wide audience among young adult readers in the United States.
Book Synopsis Campbell's New Revised Complete Guide and Descriptive Book of Mexico by : Reau Campbell
Download or read book Campbell's New Revised Complete Guide and Descriptive Book of Mexico written by Reau Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1904 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the early traveler in a country who knows the real need of a guide and descriptive book, from the fact that his journeys are made, perforce, without one, and he is compelled to find the places and things as best he can. To find these places and things, of which one may have only heard, is not unattended by difficulties. The native does not always regard them as out of the ordinary, or of special interest, and, however courteous and willing he may be, is not always able to show the way to objects of even considerable importance. I have known these difficulties as an early traveler in Mexico, and, while I rejoiced in seeing what others had not seen, I have wished for the book that might guide me over untraveled roads, till I have come to believe that he who writes the book leaves a legacy to him who comes after. The Guide and Descriptive Book of Mexico is written after the experiences of a decade of travel in that country, and an exploring expedition made expressly to secure a better acquaintance with the country, these have given a knowledge of its cities and towns, of its mountains, valleys and spreading plains, and of its history and legend, impossible from reading or hearsay. The Historical and Clerical data have been carefully culled from the best authorities and from the records of Church and State. The Legends are from the country's books and from the fascinating folklore of its people. • Statistical and tabulated information is compiled from the latest data and from the most reliable sources. The Maps are from the latest surveys, comprising the extension of railways and routes of travel to the year of the date of the book.
