Book excerpt: The comprehensive monograph on one of the most celebrated bodies of design in recent decades. Inspired and distilled from Brazil’s street and carnival cultures, Humberto and Fernando Campana have consistently produced gleefully "imperfect" designs that challenge the modernist hierarchy of form and function and the relationship of art and utility. Key figures in the "design art" movement, the Campanas’ work has been highly sought after by collectors and auctioned for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Brazilian-born brothers cite their country’s unique culture as integral to each object, often using materials from São Paolo’s favelas in their work as both inspiration and as functional parts. In their hands, coils of rope, stuffed alligators, and Bubble Wrap are transformed into shapes of unexpectedly graceful chairs, lounges, and other pieces of highly functional if improbable furniture. This element of playfulness has become a signature of their work, demonstrating an ability to imbue each piece with sophisticated humor and unpredictable form. A highly anticipated monograph, the first of their career, this book contains newly commissioned photography and detailed information on all of the Campanas’ designs, including prototypes, rare one-offs, and limited and mass-production pieces. In addition, four illuminating essays by experts in the design field make this the book on the Campanas for years to come.

Book excerpt: Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin has been pushing boundaries for the past 250 years. From inventing rosé champagne in 1775 to collaborating with innovators such as Andrée Putman and the Campana Brothers, with each passing century the legendary label goes above and beyond to challenge itself with new initiatives to energize and excite its enthusiasts. When Madame Clicquot, who had become the veuve (widow) Clicquot Ponsardin, inherited the house in 1805, she followed the motto “Only one quality, the finest” and created the first vintage and the riddling rack, two major innovations for champagne production. Centuries later, the brand behind the characteristic yellow label continues to make history, going beyond champagne to represent a complete lifestyle. In 2010, Veuve Clicquot’s home base in Reims reopened after an extensive four-year renovation by interior designer Bruno Moinard. Contemporary works by Yayoi Kusama, Karen Knorr, and Pablo Reinoso now adorn the eighteenth-century wood paneling at the Hôtel du Marc—a perfect combination of design, art, and gastronomy that acts as a center for sharing and spreading the wealth of a magnificent wine. Veuve Clicquot is the drink of choice in spring at Goodwood Circuit in the United Kingdom, in summer on the polo lawns of New York, and in winter on Carnival chariots in Rio. In 2013, Veuve Clicquot partnered with Michelin-starred chef Joël Robuchon, securing its wines a spot as the guest of honor in each of his twenty-three restaurants. The following year, a collaboration with Ferrari brought the limited-edition Veuve Clicquot Maranello collection. The house has also been active in the sustainability movement, reducing emissions at the Hôtel du Marc, as well as introducing “Naturally Clicquot” eco-friendly packaging, made from the pulp of grapes harvested from the most prestigious hills of the Champagne region—a global first. Between tradition and jet set, excellence and attitude, over the years the house has perfected the way of life “à la Clicquot,” a life synonymous with fine, authentic products and classic culture.

We think that it's possible to live in a house or apartment by a bold modern architect, to own furniture and products that are exceptionally well designed, and still be a regular human being. We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.

Book excerpt: DesignPOP is a survey of trends in contemporary furniture and products that reveals how design is not only changing with the times—it is inventing the future. The game-changing projects that compose DesignPOP push the boundaries of our expectations and show us new ideas, new possibilities, and ultimately new products that enrich our lives. The bar has been permanently raised as we enter the next century, and the proliferation of innovative designs continues. New materials and processes are being invented, convention and traditions are constantly being challenged, and sustainability and social responsibility are influencing new directions. Even the definition of designer is changing as the lines between disciplines begin to blur, with new technology from companies like Apple and Dyson radically altering both form and function. Historic boundaries disappear, designers innovate their way through roadblocks, and the twenty-first century is experiencing a design renaissance unparalleled in history. This book showcases a broad variety of these examples: from designs that pioneer a new material or a new production process, or reinvent the use for an existing one, to those that alter our expectations about the way something should look and create a whole new typology, or a thoughtful design added to products that traditionally were only considered for their functionality. It presents work from stars in the field, including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Marc Newson, Marcel Wanders, Yves Behar, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the Campana brothers, Hella Jongerius, Tord Boontje, Philippe Starck, Karim Rashid, Ron Arad, Ross Lovegrove, Dror Benshetrit, Tokujin Yoshioka, Jasper Morrison, James Dyson, and Jonathan Ive.

Through bribery, slave trading and heroin smuggling, the syndicate led by boss Duncan Vincent, increases its political influence and wealth and legitimizes a disciplined gang of thugs that calls itself the Arizona Rangers. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Favelization, a book originally published by the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum (Smithsonian Institution), Adriana Kertzer sets out to understand the ways in which specific producers of contemporary Brazilian culture capitalized on misappropriations of favelas (informal squatter settlements that grow along the hillsides and lowlands of many Brazilian cities) in order to brand luxury items as "Brazilian." Through case studies that look at films, fashion, and furniture design, she explains how designers and filmmakers engage with primitivism and stereotype to make their goods more desirable to a non-Brazilian audience. Favelization looks at the films Waste Land and City of God, shirts designed by Fernando and Humberto Campana for Lacoste, and furniture by Brunno Jahara and David Elia. Kertzer argues that the processes of interpretation, transcendence and domination are part of the favelization phenomena. The book locates design as part of a broader constellation of representations that includes a variety of forms from printed media to film. It provides visual and material analyses, as well as theoretically discussions that draw on works by scholars in cultural and postcolonial studies such as John Tagg, Edward Said, Mariana Torgovnick, Mike Davis, and Trinh T. Minh-Ha. While focused on favelization, this work raises questions about the ethical conundrums associated with using the "Other" in commercial design work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, this book provides an up-to-date history of product design and product design law covering 17 countries — Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), Russia, the United States, Brazil and Australia — selected for their innovative or influential approach to design or design protection. Each country is the subject of two chapters — one on the history of design and the other on the history of design law — authored by experts in design and intellectual property (IP) law. This unique interdisciplinary approach explains why and how various national design protection systems (that can include design, copyright, trade mark, competition and civil laws) developed, making it an ideal book for students, researchers and lawyers. The book also serves as an international survey of different national policy and legal responses to historical developments and specific design and legal issues allowing readers to consider their advantages and disadvantages — and so is also recommended for policy and law makers, as well as organizations that administer IP rights. Topics include the subject matter of design protection; procedural and substantive requirements; design registration; infringement; and the overlap of design rights and other IP rights. The chapters on design history provide further context to the historical development of these legal concepts by considering major design movements, key designers and iconic designs and the current state of design. The chapters highlight the connected and often complementary relationship between the two histories, not only for each country, but at the regional and international level, often as a result of government policies, trade, colonialism, immigration and globalisation. Design and design practice continue to become more global and evolve with developments in technology. At the same time, design laws are not internationally harmonized and continue to develop at the national level, with a number of significant changes occurring in recent years. This timely book shows how the lessons of the past continue to inform the future direction of design and the legal systems developed to protect it.
