Book excerpt: The Peninsula Campaign (also known as the Peninsular Campaign) of the American Civil War was a major Union operation launched in southeastern Virginia from March through July 1862, the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. The operation, commanded by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, was an amphibious turning movement against the Confederate States Army in Northern Virginia, intended to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond. McClellan was initially successful against the equally cautious General Joseph E. Johnston, but the emergence of the aggressive General Robert E. Lee turned the subsequent Seven Days Battles into a humiliating Union defeat. Contents: Preface. Chapter 1 - General Mcclellan And The Army Of The Potomac. Chapter 2 - Campaign Plans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, Vol. 3: Part II, Being for the Most Part Contributions by Union and Confederate Officers; Based Upon "the Century War Series" Longstreet's arrangements had been made to attack Round Top, and his orders issued with a view to turning it, when General Lee decided that the assault should be made on Cemetery Ridge by Pickett's and Pettigrew's di visions, with part of Trimble's. Longstreet formed these in two lines - Pickett on the right, supported by Wilcox; Pettigrew on the left, with Lane's and Scales's brigades under Trimble in the second line. Hill was ordered to hold his line with the remainder of his corps, six brigades, give Longstreet assistance if required, and avail himself of any success that might be gained. Finally a powerful artillery force, about one hundred and fifty guns, was ordered to prepare the way for the assault by cannonade. The necessary arrangements caused delay, and before notice of this could be received by Ewell, Johnson, as we have seen, was attacked, so that the contest was over on the left before that at the center was begun. The hoped-for concert of action in the Confederate attacks was lost from the beginning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War by Campaigns But little attention has'been paid to the movements of the various corps of the armies upon the field of battle. Too great detail has been purposely avoided. Those who desire this phase of the war are referred to the comprehensive works. Many interesting minor events have been barely mentioned, some omitted entirely. The war was full of dramatic incidents. Books might be written, and in fact have been written, upon them. My aim is to present here only the main facts of the war, with now and again an incident appended to enliven and em bellish the study of the movements of these ponderous armies in their Titanic struggles. It is hoped that the omission of technical terms and the use of the campaign methods of treatment, illustrated by the mili tary campaign maps, will be the means of so simplifying the subject that even the casual student may gain a clear idea of the various campaigns of the war in the minimum of time. Book excerpt: Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is volume one in a four-part series about the American Civil War. Edited by Robert Underwood Johnson, an American diplomat and writer, the book contains a collection of accounts and stories written by a variety of authors, primarily those who served in the Civil War. This book is a treasure trove of information for the history enthusiast. The book is divided into sections that each detail a major event, battle, or prominent individual of the war. The book opens with a brief introduction, which sets the stage for the entire collection by examining the organisation of the two governments, the United States Government and the Confederate States Government. From there, the book proceeds to detail signs of the impending conflict and the first military operations of the war. Prominent events of the war, from the Campaign of the First Bull Run, to The Battle of Shiloh, to the gunboat campaign are all discussed in tremendous detail. Contributors are both historians and notable participants in the war, including several sections written by Ulysses S. Grant. Maps and images accompany much of the text and enrich the written word. Volume one of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War is a remarkably comprehensive account of the early days of the Civil War. The battles are examined from the perspective of both sides, and the sources included by Johnson are rich in detail and truly fascinating in content. History students and enthusiasts will surely appreciate the tremendous scope of this collection. If you are looking for a thorough and exhaustive treatment of the Civil War, Robert Underwood Johnson's Battles and Leaders of the Civil War will surely appeal to you. Volume one sets the stage for the ongoing conflict, which is examined in even greater detail over the course of the final three volumes of this fantastic collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Shepherdstown and the End of the Campaign is the third and final volume of Ezra Carman’s magisterial The Maryland Campaign of September 1862. As bloody and horrific as the battle of Antietam was, historian Ezra Carman—who penned a 1,800-page manuscript on the Maryland campaign—did not believe it was the decisive battle of the campaign. Generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan intended to continue fighting after Sharpsburg, but the battle of Shepherdstown Ford (September 19 and 20) forced them to abandon their goals and end the campaign. Carman was one of the few who gave this smaller engagement its due importance, detailing the disaster that befell the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry and Maj. Gen. A. P. Hill’s success in repulsing the Union advance, and the often overlooked foray of Jeb Stuart’s cavalry to seize the Potomac River ford at Williamsport. Carman also added a statistical study of the casualties in the various battles of the entire Maryland Campaign, and covered Lincoln’s decision to relieve McClellan of command on November 7. He also explored the relations between President Lincoln and General McClellan before and after the Maryland Campaign, which he appended to his original manuscript. The “before” section, a thorough examination of the controversy about McClellan’s role in the aftermath of Second Manassas campaign, will surprise some and discomfort others, and includes an interesting narrative about McClellan’s reluctance to commit General Franklin’s corps to aid Maj. Gen. John Pope’s army at Manassas. Carman concludes with an executive summary of the entire campaign. Dr. Clemens concludes Carman’s invaluable narrative with a bibliographical dictionary (and genealogical goldmine) of the soldiers, politicians, and diplomats who had an impact on shaping Carman’s manuscript. While many names will be familiar to readers, others upon whom Carman relied for creating his campaign narrative are as obscure to us today as they were during the war. The Maryland Campaign of September 1862, Vol. III: The Battle of Shepherdstown and the End of the Campaign, concludes the most comprehensive and detailed account of the campaign ever produced. Jammed with firsthand accounts, personal anecdotes, detailed footnotes, maps, and photos, this long-awaited study will be appreciated as Civil War history at its finest.
