Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan opened in the summer of 1929 with a vision of providing an outdoor experience for young people. It is owned and operated by the Northeast Illinois Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), in Highland Park, Illinois, and located in Pearson, Wisconsin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the ten year period from 1940 to 1950 during which author Clarke Church grew from boyhood to young manhood. During these years Mr. Church transitioned through high school, the US Army, and college, and his memory of events is reinforced by quotations from the 106 letters which he wrote to his parents at home. Not only is this a story about one boy's experiences while coming of age, but it positions these experiences against a backdrop of dangerous and exciting times for our country and for the world - the end of the Great Depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the ebb and flow of World War II in Europe and the Far East, and the early stages of the Cold War. Though written primarily for his family and descendents yet to come, the author hopes that his manuscript will stimulate pleasant memories of their formative years in other readers as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Boy Scout camp has its unique history. This is the story of one of them: the Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation, located since 1948 in upstate New Yorks beautiful and historic Adirondack Mountains. The story is a mixture of fact, nostalgia, and youthful dreams. It is intended to provide a lasting record of what went on in this extraordinary camp from the day it opened in 1920 on Long Pond near Mahopac, NY to the present. Written by scouters who, as staff members, lived parts of that history, it evokes experiences that often affect entire lifetimes of those who lived them. It also offers something of value to those of you who perhaps never went to camp.

Book excerpt: Always Faithful is a thoughtful, moving account of a man's struggle to understand war in the desert and his duties to his men, his marriage, and himself. The book is a literary memoir carved from the author's experiences as a U.S. Marine during the ground assault of the 1991 Gulf War. The author writes," I don't remember whether I actually drew my pistol on an Afghan mercenary outside the phone booth in Khafgi. I remember breaking his nose by slamming the edge of the door into his face as he pressed his cheek against the outside of the glass. I remember reaching for my pistol, but I am not sure whether I actually pointed it at him." Chapters from the book were finalists in the Writer's Digest Personal Essay contest, the Lone Mountain Writer's Contest, and The Loft Literary Center's Creative Non-Fiction Contest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a different day, a different time, and a different era when Verner Reid entered the world inside a one-room shack with a dirt floor as the sun welcomed her through a rag-covered hole. Born into a tiny Negro community in the heart of the Delta, Verner grew up idolizing Eartha Kitt, struggling to endure poverty, and learning to rely on her intuition to survive. In a heartbreaking yet inspirational memoir, Verner leads others through the journey of her life as she moved to Chicago as part of the Great Migration and overcame childhood sexual trauma, an abusive marriage, and a rape to courageously carve her own path in television as a talk show host and later complete her education as a nontraditional student. As she reveals a glimpse into the betrayals, treachery, unfaithfulness, bigotry, and discrimination she endured while pursuing her passion, Verner shines a light on her determination to be a woman of substance, despite her personal challenges. (Shes) A Woman of Substance shares the true story of one womans experiences as she navigated from a poverty-stricken childhood in the rural South to pursue her dreams.
