Book Synopsis Around Squam Lake by : Bruce D. Heald
Download or read book Around Squam Lake written by Bruce D. Heald and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the foothills of the White Mountains, Squam Lake was not discovered by English settlers until the mid-1700s. However, the lake area had long been inhabited by the Abenaki Nation of the Algonquin Federation. These people called the waters Kees-ee-hunk-nip-ee, meaning "goose lake in the highlands" (later shortened to Kusumpy or Casumpa) and also Asquam, meaning "water." The latter name was eventually shortened to become Squam Lake. With more than two hundred rare images, Around Squam Lake celebrates the beauty, the geology, and the history of Squam Valley. The book includes early Native American lore and the gradual development of what are known as the Five Towns-namely, Moultonboro, Sandwich, Holderness, Center Harbor, and Ashland. It reflects upon "big" Squam Lake and Little Squam Lake (where On Golden Pond was filmed), highlighting the shoreline points and coves, the succession of islands that dot the surface, and the surrounding mountains, which include the Squam Mountain range, the Sandwich range, and Red Hill, which rises at the head of the valley.

Book Synopsis Sacred Playgrounds by : Jacob Sorenson
Download or read book Sacred Playgrounds written by Jacob Sorenson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Playgrounds explores the wisdom of camping ministry for Christian education and faith formation, examining its rich history and fundamental characteristics with compelling stories, groundbreaking research, and theological grounding. Christian summer camp is an integral part of the ecology of faith formation in North America, though it has received surprisingly little attention in the scholarly community until now. Camping ministry is often dismissed as simple fun and games or a brief spiritual high that does not last. However, camp experiences often serve as deeply relational and immersive faith experiences that have lasting impacts on participants. Five fundamental characteristics combine dynamically in the effective camp experience: participatory, faith-centered, safe space, relational, and unplugged from home. Together, they open the space for participants to consider new understandings of God, to have time for deep self-reflection, and to build intentional Christian community. These camp experiences are essential components in a larger ecology of faith formation, including the home and congregation. The insight and evidence presented in this book demonstrate that the contributions of camping ministry must be taken seriously among scholars, Christian educators, and ministry professionals.
Download or read book Lake Winnipesaukee written by Bruce Heald and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-07-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world unto itself, Lake Winnipesaukee and its environs have attracted and sustained a variety of cultures over the past centuries, from early American Indian tribes, to New World settlers, to today's seasonal tourists. Whether Indian hunter, aspiring pioneer, or modern-day angler, each, in turn, fell for the region's wild allure: its sheer natural beauty, fertile soils, and waters teeming with an assortment of fish, including great quantities of shad, salmon, pickerel, smelt, and trout. Within this magnificent setting, scores of hardy, resolute frontier men and women worked tirelessly to fashion homes and towns along the bays, tributaries, islands, and shoreline of the lake. Lake Winnipesaukee documents the history of the region from its early Native American heritage to the lasting legacy of the first American settlers. With over 150 accompanying illustrations, the many stories recorded in this unique volume evoke memories of a simpler way of life, when the lake was evolving from a scattering of humble villages, like Laconia, Meredith, and Wolfeboro, and just beginning to toy with a budding tourist industry. Readers of many generations will enjoy reliving the early summer camps, upstart businesses, and the variety of entertainment and recreation the lake's waters have provided, such as canoe trips, steamships rides, and ski boat adventures.
