Book Synopsis Ban Bak: A Historian's Notebook, 2014 by : Nail 213
Download or read book Ban Bak: A Historian's Notebook, 2014 written by Nail 213 and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ban Bak" is a definitive study of the discovery and destruction of a secret Laotian logistics complex on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Forward Air Controllers observed suspicious activity near the Ban Bak river crossing. CHECO reports of the ""COVEY Bomb Dump"" were flawed, but COVEY 257/Gary Beard corrects the record with first-person accounts by participants. Additional information, both historical and fictional, is provided by veteran authors whose writings lend both resource and context. Ban Bak is third of three FAC related volumes associated with FACs in the Vietnam War (Cleared Hot Vol. I and Cleared Hot Vol. II). BAN BAK extends these accounts by including tributes to fallen FACs, a Time-Line of Forward Air Controllers in history, an Lexicon of FAC Terms and Information, a classified report on "COMBAT INK" surveillance methods, and an extensive bibliography of FAC related literature and sources useful to all readers of Vietnam history. Ban Bak is 474 pages long, A4 format, in soft binding only

Book excerpt: "You shouldn't expect much of him. He's...he's damaged." Damaged. What a horrible word. Like a car after a wreck...It was how I'd been feeling myself. Slightly ruined, a big mess. Lately there have been a lot of guys in Sandpiper's life. In the past year, she's gone through eight or nine different boyfriends -- if you can call them that. She knows the boys are only using her for one thing, but she is using them, too. The Walker is different from the others. He is kind and gentle. Mysterious. And most of all, he is the first guy who doesn't want Sandy for all the usual reasons. In fact, she's not sure if he wants her for any reason. But she knows she wants to be around him. He makes her feel safe, when all the other parts of her life -- like her family and friends -- just make her feel awful. And when one of Sandy's exes starts harassing her, the Walker may be the only person who can help Sandy confront her uneasy past -- and steady herself for a different future.

Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old idealist Indigo Washington, a student at Union High School in Philadelphia, dreams of becoming a filmmaker but also feels the pressure of her parents expectations to find a more practical career. In the meantime, Indigo looks to her older sister, Marisol, and her friends Penny, Derek, and Boris to help her navigate the windy path of life. Heavy loads of schoolwork and extracurricular commitments keep Indigo away from her interest in filmmaking and from the schools Earth Day celebration. When she later learns that following the event, her nemesis, Emilia Valentina, has started going out with Derek Johnson, her tennis teammate and secret crush, Indigo is angry and upset. Pushed by her rebellious best friend, Penny Charleston, she decides to make a documentary about her classmates for the spring talent show. As the show approaches, however, drama among Indigos friends increases. Indigo is caught between her friendship with Derek and her deeper feelings for him, bearing witness to Dereks duty to overcome the social obstacles that arise from growing up in one of Philadelphias toughest neighborhoods. Following the trials and tribulations of a small group of teens at a Philadelphia high school, this young adult novel offers an intriguing ride through adolescence and urban youth culture.

Book excerpt: One day in early February Nancy Perkins, a nurse in a decaying marriage, receives an assignment to care for a Vietnam War veteran suffering from a severe case of Alzheimer's. Not only does the patient, Jeremiah Jacobson, believe himself to be in the midst of war but he also believes all of his nurses and visitors to be deceased family members and friends from his tormented past. On the same day Andrea Waters, an anti-social high school senior with a painful past, is ordered by her father to visit Jeremiah on weekdays. Although reluctant, Andrea agrees to spend her afternoons with a grandparent she was never particularly close to and barely knows anything about. In order to communicate more easily with Jeremiah, Andrea and Nancy pretend to be the deceased relatives and friends he imagines them to be. They never thought doing so would change his life or theirs.
Book Synopsis The Sutras of Abu Ghraib by : Aidan Delgado
Download or read book The Sutras of Abu Ghraib written by Aidan Delgado and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man's transformation from Army Reserve volunteer to Buddhist conscientious objector and critic of the war in Iraq The Sutras of Abu Ghraib is the story of a soldier who refused to succumb to violence. In chronicling the struggles of military life and the dehumanizing effects of war, Aidan Delgado examines the attitudes that make prisoner abuse possible and explores his own developing Buddhist beliefs against a brutal backdrop. It is a tale of physical bravery, moral courage, and the cost of holding on to your identity while everyone around you is losing theirs. The son of a diplomat, Delgado grew up in various countries, including Thailand, where he was introduced to Buddhism, and Egypt, where he learned Arabic. In 2001, after his first year of college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve, and in 2003 he was deployed as a specialist in Nasiriyah and at Abu Ghraib. When his colleagues learned that he spoke some Arabic and enjoyed meeting Iraqis, they made use of him but also began to mistrust him. As Delgado witnessed more and more American racism, arrogance, and abuse of unarmed Iraqis, his opposition mounted. Concluding that war ran counter to his Buddhist principles, he sought conscientious objector status and, after finishing his tour of duty, was honorably discharged. The following year, Bob Herbert wrote in the New York Times, "The public at large and especially the many soldiers who have behaved honorably in Iraq deserve an honest answer . . . Mr. Delgado's complaints and the entire conduct of this wretched war should be thoroughly investigated."

Book Synopsis Swampwalker's Journal by : David M. Carroll
Download or read book Swampwalker's Journal written by David M. Carroll and published by HMH. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the John Burroughs Medal: An “admission ticket to a secret corner of the world” (Bill McKibben). Naturalist David Carroll has dedicated his life to art and to wetlands. He is as passionate about swamps, bogs, vernal ponds, and the creatures who live in them as most of us are about our families and closest friends. He knows frogs and snakes, muskrats and minks, dragonflies, water lilies, cattails, sedges—everything that swims, flies, trudges, slithers, or sinks its roots in wet places. In this “intimate and wise book,” Carroll takes us on a lively, unforgettable yearlong journey, illustrated with his own elegant drawings, through the wetlands and reveals why they are so important to his life and ours—and to all life on Earth (Sue Hubbell). “Carroll covers four seasons of wading through marshes, swamps, bogs, and fens. [His] eye for detail serves him well, whether he’s spying on a tiny garter snake struggling to suck down a much larger wood frog or watching a raccoon savagely digging a turtle out of its shell.” —Entertainment Weekly “In my pantheon of nature writers, David Carroll walks on water.” —Robert Michael Pyle
