Download or read book Trinity College Library Dublin written by Peter Fox and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, scholarly history of Trinity College Library Dublin. It covers the whole 400 years of the Library's development, from its foundation by James Ussher in the seventeenth century to the electronic revolution of the twenty-first century. Particular attention is given to the buildings and to the politics involved in obtaining funding for them, as well as to the acquisition of the great treasures, such as the Book of Kells and the libraries of Ussher, Claudius Gilbert and Hendrik Fagel. An important aspect is the comprehensive coverage of legal deposit from the beginning of the nineteenth century, viewed for the first time from the Irish perspective. The book also draws parallels with the development of other libraries in Dublin and with those of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and features throughout the individuals who influenced the Library's development - librarians, politicians, readers, book collectors and book thieves.

Book excerpt: The Old Library of St John's College, Cambridge is home to a hugely important collection of printed books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, furniture, busts, paintings and other artefacts, the work of writers, craftsmen and artists active across more than one thousand years. The Library Treasures of St John's College, Cambridge offers a lavishly illustrated introduction to the diversity and richness of that collection. It demonstrates something particularly important about St John's College Library, and about libraries in many other Cambridge Colleges: that besides meeting the academic needs of present-day Fellows and students, they also care for museum and archival collections of national and international importance: the essential primary materials and sources sought after by scholars across the world.

This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first detailed survey of libraries in Britain and Ireland up to the Civil War. It traces the transition from collections of books without a fixed local habitation to the library, chiefly of printed books, much as we know it today. It examines changing patterns in the formation of book collections in the earlier medieval period, traces the combined impact of the activities of the mendicant orders and the scholarship of the universities in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the adoption of the library room and the growth of private book collections in the fourteenth and fifteenth. The volume then focuses upon the dispersal of the monastic libraries in the mid-sixteenth centuries, the creation of new types of library, and finally, the steps whereby the collections amassed by antiquaries came to form the bases of the national and institutional libraries of Britain and Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Pepys's Library, as famous in his own lifetime as it is now, was willed by Pepys to Magdalene, the college he had attended in the 1650s. It finally arrived in 1724 to be housed in a handsome new building. A remarkable collection of some 3,000 items, the library includes medieval manuscripts and early printed books by Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde; a naval collection, reflecting Pepys's role as Secretary to the Admiralty; works by Pepys's contemporaries and members of the Royal Society, including Newton's Principia Mathematica; and an unrivalled array of ephemera - letters, playbills and invitations. Alongside the Pepys Library, Magdalene has an impressive historic collection, housed in the beautiful Old Library rooms. Evolving from a series of major benefactions to the college across nearly 500 years, combined with the books routinely acquired for the use of students and scholars in the past, the Old Library contains medieval manuscripts, incunabula, prints and papers, as well as the ancient records of the college. Contents: Preface; Introduction; The Library of Samuel Pepys; The Pepys Building; Pepys the Collector; The Diary; Furnishing a Library; The Old Library: Heart of the College; Building a Collection; The Treasures of the Old Library; Special Collections; Objects in the Collections; The Magdalene College Archives; The Work of the Historic Libraries: - Exhibitions, - Conservation, - Scholars and Readers; List of (Fellow) Librarians.

Book Synopsis The University and College Libraries of Cambridge by : Peter D. Clarke
Download or read book The University and College Libraries of Cambridge written by Peter D. Clarke and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval university at Cambridge was a centre for the circulation of books. In complicated networks of acquisition and exchange, books were bought, borrowed, copied, and bequeathed. Colleges came to own collections of books for the use of their fellows, and in the late middle ages many colleges built library-rooms to house their books. Some colleges, notably Peterhouse, Gonville and Caius, and Pembroke, still retain large parts of their medieval collections. This volume collects for the first time all the medieval documents that refer to library holdings in both the medieval university and its colleges, documents as various as borrowing registers, inventories, and formal catalogues of various dates and degrees of sophistication. Also included is a substantial biographical section on individuals who gave or bequeathed books to Cambridge libraries, and where a will survives it is included as a document.
