Book Synopsis Honoring the Past, Building the Future by : Ricardo Ávila
Download or read book Honoring the Past, Building the Future written by Ricardo Ávila and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although science has unlocked the secrets of the human genome, the causes of social and economic development remain stubbornly enigmatic. Why do some countries adopt new technologies more readily than others? Why does income inequality persist in some regions--even in the face of rapid economic growth? Why do some societies welcome the challenges of globalization while others attempt to turn back the tide? Honoring the Past, Building the Future examines these and many related questions through the experience of Latin America and the Caribbean. In an accessible, journalistic style, author Ricardo Ávila explores a tumultuous half-century in which the region went from backwater to breadbasket, from dictatorship to democracy, and from economic basket case to emerging power.

Book Synopsis Gorgeous Monster by : Angela Rivas Gamboa
Download or read book Gorgeous Monster written by Angela Rivas Gamboa and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to a better understanding of governmental attempts to manage violence, a particularly sensitive phenomenon affecting contemporary societies. At the same time, it gives a feel for life and governance in urban Colombia. At the outset of the 21st century, the Colombian capital shifted from a city frequently described as one of the most violent places in Latin America, to a city increasingly seen as an exemplary case of violence reduction for other cities in the region. This book inquires into such a historic transformation. It, navigates through various settings including academic circles, municipal offices, multilateral agencies and daily urban scenes. In doing so, it renders the Colombian capital as the locale for processes of creating, adopting, and circulating a model of intervention for reducing violence. It sheds light on local and extra-local dynamics that rest behind the recent metamorphosis of the Colombian capital. Gorgeous Monster is directed towards scholars in Latin American Studies, Cultural Studies, Urban Studies, and Anthropology. It is particularly appealing to those engaged in ongoing debates about ethnography. It is also addressed to those interested in contemporary Colombia, violence management, and urban governance, as well as to anybody engaged in policy-making.
Book Synopsis Development in Latin America by : Víctor Ramiro Fernández
Download or read book Development in Latin America written by Víctor Ramiro Fernández and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discusses the development theory advanced by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in the 1940s, and its transformations through the second half of the twentieth century. In this time frame, the authors identify two approaches: structuralism (1950-1980) and neo-structuralism (1980-onwards). The contributors describe the transition in terms of economic theory and policy; the conceptualization of the State; and the consideration of space on regional and global scales. They argue that structuralism is still relevant for understanding the current problems of development if a careful and appropriate recovery and update of its main ideas and concepts is made in relation to the current context of globalization and internationalization of production and finance.

Book Synopsis Measuring Innovation in OECD and Non-OECD Countries by : William Blankley
Download or read book Measuring Innovation in OECD and Non-OECD Countries written by William Blankley and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that innovation is key to economic growth. Countries where research and innovation are high on the national agenda are best suited to prosper in the knowledge-based economy. Conversely, countries whose economies are mainly dependent on natural resources and basic industries tend to lack competitiveness and flexibility in adapting to changing global trends. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has long been concerned with the measurement of research and experimental development (R&D) and innovation activities. Under apartheid rule South Africa was barred from participating in OECD activities. Shortly after the advent of democracy in South Africa in 1994 the then Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (now the Department of Science and Technology) initiated the process of applying for observer status on the OECD Committee for Scientific and Technological Policy. South Africa gained observer status in 1998. In March 2001, the Department and the OECD jointly hosted an international seminar in Pretoria on the measurement of innovation activities in OECD and non-OECD countries. This book is a collection of selected papers that were presented at the seminar by leading international and South African experts in innovation measurement. The chapters reflect various aspects of the measurement of innovation and how these measurements are applied in different countries. The volume contributes to the debate that exists between developing and developed countries on their approaches to the measurement of innovation.

Book Synopsis The World's Youth by : Benson Bradford Brown
Download or read book The World's Youth written by Benson Bradford Brown and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life stage of adolescence now occurs in most corners of the world, but it takes different forms in different regions. Peers, with such a central role in Western adolescence, play a comparatively minor role in the lives of Arabic and South Asian adolescents. Emotional turmoil and individuation from family occur in some societies but not others. Adolescent sexual revolutions are sweeping through Japan and Latin America. In this 2002 book, scholars from eight regions of the world describe the distinct nature of adolescence in their regions. They draw on research to address standard topics regarding this age - family and peer relationships, schooling, preparation for work, physical and mental health - and show how these have a different cast across societies. As a whole, the book depicts how rapid global change is dramatically altering the experience of the adolescent transition, creating opportunities and challenges for adolescents, parents, teachers, and concerned others.
