Book excerpt: Particle physics is the science that pursues the age-old quest for the innermost structure of matter and the fundamental interactions between its constituents. Modern experiments in this field rely increasingly on calorimetry, a detection techniques in which the particles of interest are absorbed in the detector. Calorimeters are very intricate instruments, their performance characteristics depend in subtle, sometimes counter-intuitive ways on design details. This book, written by one of the world's foremost experts, is the first comprehensive text on this topic. It provides a fundamental and systematic introduction, in which many intriguing calorimeter features are explained. It also describes the state of the art, both for what concerns the fundamental understanding of calorimetric particle detection and the actual detectors that have been or are being built and operated in experiments. In the last chapter, some landmark scientific discoveries in which calorimetry has played an important role are discussed. This book summarizes and puts into perspective work described in some 600 scientific papers, listed in the bibliography.

Book excerpt: The Fifth International Conference on Calorimetry in High Energy Physics was held Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 1994 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The results presented show that calorimetry is a key element in the experiments at the frontier. As these experiments evolve, there are new challenges for calorimetry in terms of performance in energy and position resolution at ever increasing rates. The proceedings document the state-of-the-art in calorimetry.

The Tenth Conference was attended by more than 150 physicists from 16 countries and covered all aspects of calorimetric particle detection and measurements, with emphasis on high energy physics and astrophysics experiments. The proceedings contain three parts: introductory papers, contributed papers and perspective papers. The introduction starts with a historical review of calorimetry developments, and continues with overviews of the current status of calorimetry in high energy physics and astrophysics, which are followed by discussions on calorimetry in future accelerator facilities, such as linear colliders and the Super B factories. A “hot” technology regarding the “energy flow concept” is also discussed. The contributed papers are organized in 11 sessions. The perspective papers summarize the physics and limitation of calorimeter applications in high energy physics, astrophysics and medical industries. Book excerpt: Calorimetry is rapidly gaining recognition as a primary detection technique for high energy, high luminosity machines. Calorimetry is fast developing; old techniques, like scintillator plates or liquid argon, are defined to achieve their ultimate performance. New techniques, like warm liquids or scintillating fibers, are tested in several setups. The conference is intended to review the advancement of calorimetry and plans for new R&D.

Book excerpt: This book lays the foundations of the theory of fluctuating multivalued fields with numerous applications. Most prominent among these are phenomena dominated by the statistical mechanics of line-like objects, such as the phase transitions in superfluids and superconductors as well as the melting process of crystals, and the electromagnetic potential as a multivalued field that can produce a condensate of magnetic monopoles. In addition, multivalued mappings play a crucial role in deriving the physical laws of matter coupled to gauge fields and gravity with torsion from the laws of free matter. Through careful analysis of each of these applications, the book thus provides students and researchers with supplementary reading material for graduate courses on phase transitions, quantum field theory, gravitational physics, and differential geometry.

Book excerpt: Experimental Techniques in High-Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics is a compilation of outstanding technical papers and reviews of the ingenious methods developed for experimentation in modern nuclear and particle physics. This book, a second edition, provides a balanced view of the major tools and technical concepts currently in use, and elucidates the basic principles that underly the detection devices. Several of the articles in this volume have never been published, or have appeared in relatively inaccessible journals. Although the emphasis is on charged-particle tracking and calorimetry, general reviews of ionization detectors and Monte Carlo techniques are also included. This book serves as a compact source of reference for graduate students and experimenters in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, seeking information on some of the major ideas and techniques developed for modern experiments in these fields. Contents:Particle Detectors (K Kleinknecht)Principles of Operation of Multiwire Proportional and Drift Chambers (F Sauli)High-Resolution Electronic Particle Detectors (G Charpak & F Sauli)Calorimetry in High-Energy Physics (C Fabjan)Fluctuations in Calorimetry Measurements (U Amaldi)The Physics of Charged Particle Identification dE/dx, Cerenkov and Transition Radiation (W W M Allison and P R S Wright)A Two-Dimensional, Single-Photoelectron Drift Detector for Cherenkov Ring Imaging (E Barrelet et al.)Development of Proportional Counters Using Photosensitive Gases and Liquids (D F Anderson)Liquid-Argon Ionization Chambers as Total Absorption Detectors (W J Willis & V Radeka)Fundamental Properties of Liquid Argon, Krypton and Xenon as Radiation Detector Media (T Doke)Signal, Noise and Resolution in Position-Sensitive Detectors (V Radeka)Monte Carlo Theory and Practice (F James)High Resolution Hadron Calorimetry (R Wigmans) Readership: Nuclear and particle physicists. keywords: “… this book is well suited for active experimenters in the field who will appreciate very much the exhaustive reference … the book may well serve as a basis for graduate students courses, particularly in view of the reasonable price of the volume.” J. Book excerpt: For the eighth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics we returned once again to the Hotel on the Cay on that speck of land in the harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. This time, the ASI brought together a total of 73 participants, from 21 countries. The primary support for the meeting was provided, as usual, by the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), by the U. S. National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing countries. In addition, the International Science Foundation contributed very generously to the support of a participant from Russia. As in the case of the previous ASls, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures, although, unfortunately, short of three contributions, should complement the material published in the first seven ASIs, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting.
