Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calling Down Fire examines the social and cultural influence of Jefferson County, New York, an isolated, agrarian setting, on the formation of Charles Grandison Finney's theology and revival methods. Finney, who later became president of Oberlin College, was arguably the most innovative and influential revivalist of the Second Great Awakening. He pioneered methods which were widely adopted and promoted a theology that emphasized the ability of evangelists to save souls and the importance of free will in the salvation process. Marianne Perciaccante follows the course of religious enthusiasm and the evolution of the reform impulse in Jefferson County following Finney's departure for more influential pulpits. When Finney began to preach in Jefferson County, he brought Baptist and Methodist piety to the Presbyterians of the northern section of the county. This pious fervor eventually was adopted widely by middle-class Presbyterians and Congregationalists and constituted an acceptance by elites of tempered, non-elite piety.
Book Synopsis Calling Down the Fire by : Jimmy Pritchard
Download or read book Calling Down the Fire written by Jimmy Pritchard and published by CrossHouse Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do Christians fail to speak up with power and influence? Why do so few listen when God clearly speaks? In recent years God has given America's churches the ear of our nation. The aftermath of 9/11 and the Gulf War saw people, seeking a word from heaven, flood to local congregations. Why did churches miss their rare opportunity to speak a word from God to this eager audience? Because Christians-neither those in the pew nor in the pulpit-courageously call down the fire of God-speaking the unvarnished, unabashed truth about how God expects His people to live. Dr. Jimmy Pritchard pleads with laypersons and pastors to follow the example of the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha-paying whatever price is necessary to proclaim God's Word in a way that demands a hearing. In this thoughtful, practical study of 1 and 2 Kings, Pritchard shows how everyday believers can be used by God to stand in fear of no one and usher in a time of spiritual awakening.
Book Synopsis We Carry the Fire by : Richard A. Hoehn
Download or read book We Carry the Fire written by Richard A. Hoehn and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Carry the Fire describes a social and political spirituality defined by actions that save families, civilization, and the planet. These actions, based on values articulated in religious congregations, result in tangible outcomes in the real world: people live instead of die, democracy is strengthened, nature is restored, and the human spirit flourishes. The author shows how an action-spirituality is different from me- and escapist-spiritualities. Spiritual meaning is found by working in solidarity with people around the world to love our neighbors, as well as those who aren’t our neighbors, as ourselves. As congregations are struggling to adjust to contemporary realities, Hoehn brings the passion and knowledge of a pastor, academic, author, activist, and grassroots organizer down to earth in real time.
Download or read book Attributes of God written by A.W Pink and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Transforming Knowledge of the Living God The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Pink's book explores attributes such as God's decrees, foreknowledge, sovereignty, holiness, grace, and mercy, among many others, all packaged in a style especially useful for pastors, teachers, and Bible students. Our God who is above all names cannot be found through human searching alone, Pink teaches, but can be known only as he is revealed by the Holy Spirit through his living Word.

I call down Fire from Heaven against the powers, principalities, rulers of darkness, spiritual wickedness, and unrepentant evil agents who will not stop militating against me until they are stopped, in the Name of Jesus. 2. Let the anger of the Lord be kindled against those who contend with me, especially those without cause, in the Name of Jesus. 3. Let the God who answers by Fire, answer by FIRE, in the Name of Jesus. Book Synopsis The Fire Next Time by : James Baldwin
Download or read book The Fire Next Time written by James Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1963, James Baldwin's A Fire Next Time stabbed at the heart of America's so-called ldquo;Negro problemrdquo;. As remarkable for its masterful prose as it is for its uncompromising account of black experience in the United States, it is considered to this day one of the most articulate and influential expressions of 1960s race relations. The book consists of two essays, ldquo;My Dungeon Shook mdash; Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation,rdquo; and ldquo;Down At The Cross mdash; Letter from a Region of My Mind.rdquo; It weaves thematic threads of love, faith, and family into a candid assault on the hypocrisy of the so-say ldquo;land of the freerdquo;, insisting on the inequality implicit to American society. ldquo;You were born where you were born and faced the future that you facedrdquo;, Baldwin writes to his nephew, ldquo;because you were black and for no other reason.rdquo; His profound sense of injustice is matched by a robust belief in ldquo;monumental dignityrdquo;, in patience, empathy, and the possibility of transforming America into ldquo;what America must become.rdquo;
Book Synopsis The Worship Pastor by : Zac M. Hicks
Download or read book The Worship Pastor written by Zac M. Hicks and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern worship leaders are restless. They have inherited a model of leadership that equates leading worship with being a rock star. But leading worship is more than a performance, it's about shaping souls and making disciples. Every worship leader is really a pastor. The Worship Pastor is a practical and biblical introduction to this essential pastoral role. Filled with engaging, illustrative stories it is organized to address questions of theory and practice, striving to balance conversational accessibility with informed instruction. Part One presents a series of evocative "vignettes"--intriguing and descriptive titles and metaphors of who a Worship Pastor is and what he or she does. It shows the Worship Pastor as Church-Lover, Disciple Maker, Corporate Mystic, and Doxological Philosopher. Part Two covers specific roles related to ministry within the worship service itself--the Worship Pastor as Theological Dietician, Caregiver, Mortician, Emotional Shepherd, War General, Prophetic Guardian, Missional Historian, and Liturgical Architect. Part Three looks at ministry beyond the worship service--the Worship Pastor as Visionary Teacher, Evangelist, Artist Chaplain, and Team Leader. While some worship leaders are eager to embrace their pastoral role, many are lost and confused or lack the resources of time or money to figure out what this role looks like. Pastor Zac Hicks gives us a clear guide to leading worship, one that takes the pastoral call seriously.
