Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From schoolboy band to sold-out stadium tours and worldwide album sales of over 100 million, Genesis were one of the defining progressive rock bands of the seventies, playing a huge part in shaping the genre. Over a career spanning fifty-five years from formation to the Last Domino? tour of 2021, they developed and adapted through many changes, some of which polarised their existing fans but attracted countless new ones. While Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway helped define progressive rock, it was the three-piece line up of Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins that became the real hit-makers, with albums like Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance and massive hit singles like 'No Son of Mine' and 'Land of Confusion'. This book takes the reader on a journey through their entire catalogue, which includes fifteen studio and six live albums, including five consecutive number ones in the UK and five consecutive top tens in the USA, visiting each album in turn and examining every track. It is compiled from the viewpoint of a lifelong fan, and it is hoped that the book stirs many old memories, as it has done for the author, as well as providing some insight for more recent fans of the band. Stuart Macfarlane was a teenager during the seventies, the heyday of classic rock. He quickly developed a love of progressive music, listening to as many bands as he could find and was regularly in the audience at the famous Glasgow Apollo. His previous writing experience includes many technical conference papers and publications as well as reviews and interviews for Rock Society Magazine. He is also a musician, having written and performed original music through the 80s with Dunfermline band StraiTTalk. He lives in Dunfermline, Scotland.

Book excerpt: Quintessentially British, Genesis spearheaded progressive rock in the 1970s, evolving into a chart-topping success through the end of the millennium. Influencing rock groups such as Radiohead, Phish, Rush, Marillion and Elbow, the experimental format of Genesis' songs inspired new avenues for music to explore. From the 23-minute masterpiece "Supper's Ready," via the sublime beauty of "Ripples" and the bold experimentation of "Mama", to hits such as "Invisible Touch" and "I Can't Dance," their material was inventive and unique. This book is the chronological history of the band's music, with critical analysis and key details of each of the 204 songs Genesis recorded and released.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth and comprehensive guide to – and history of – music collecting, The Ultimate Guide to Vinyl and More traces the hobby from its beginnings over a century ago. The book features informative and entertaining sections on every significant format in which recorded music has been released – and some that are now almost completely forgotten. Based on Dave Thompson's original Backbeat classic, The Music Lover's Guide to Record Collecting, this revamped, colorful, expanded edition takes readers from the early days of cylinders, 78s, and Edison records on through 45s, LPs, 8-tracks, cassettes, bootlegs, CDs, MiniDiscs, MP3s, LPs, and other formats. Landmark labels, collectable artists, specialist themes, and more are explored across a series of essays, while dozens of color images bring the most obscure corners of the hobby to life. Unlike other volumes that focus exclusively on vinyl, this book caters to the audiophile whose obsession for music welcomes all formats. Through it all, the joy and fascination of music collecting in all its guises comes alive.

Book excerpt: First published in 1959, Iona and Peter Opie's The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren is a pathbreaking work of scholarship that is also a splendid and enduring work of literature. Going outside the nursery, with its assortment of parent-approved entertainments, to observe and investigate the day-to-day creative intelligence and activities of children, the Opies bring to life the rites and rhymes, jokes and jeers, laws, games, and secret spells of what has been called "the greatest of savage tribes, and the only one which shows no signs of dying out."

As a trained nurse, newly married to the son of the Governor of Rhodesia during the UDI years, Susan writes compellingly about bringing up a family on their farm in Matabeleland in the midst of the unfolding terror and growing number of atrocities. Above all it is a human story. Sometimes shocking and always moving, there is also warmth and humour as Susan creates a gripping picture of the conflict and tells of her family’s survival when many of her friends and neighbouring farmers didn’t. The book is a testament to the courage displayed by so many people who were tested day after day by almost unimaginable horrors.

Book excerpt: The ATB Valiant/Louisiana, an unusual type of oil tanker, is on a peaceful, seven day cruise from Texas to New York City, carrying eighty-five million gallons of gasoline. After the Arab Spring, former terror regimes are deceiving the world: building schools, feeding the hungry, showing a façade of peace, while enabling… Tar al Bazid sees his Saudi village ravaged by jets, bombs and bullets. This leads him on a murderous quest for payback. He and his band of seasoned terrorist soldiers attack and board the Valiant off the coast of Miami, with the intention of blowing her up next to the United Nations Complex in New York during a multi-national peace conference. Secrecy is maintained and no demands are put forth, because a plan of deception and misdirection is in the works. Reverend Tom Stevens is a preacher leading a new religion, teaching “Separate but Equal”, a thinly veiled racist movement gaining major ground in America, violently demonstrating at the U.N. The terrorists are spotted and reported by Dr. Alex Arzu, a brilliant language professor. Shattered by the murder of his wife and kids, he seeks refuge as a hermit on a small Bahamian Island, only to return to the world a few years later to reveal all he has seen. Only Charlie Mitchell, a PTSD suffering veteran who is serving aboard the Valiant, and Captain John Sheppard, headstrong commandant of a U.S. Coast Guard station stand in their way.
