Book excerpt: The term Minutemen hearkens back to the American Revolution and those militiamen who at a minute's notice were armed and prepared to fight the British Regulars. Where are the Minutemen today? I would argue that they no longer exist. Although Reserve Component forces are on the front lines in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Kosovo unlike their active duty counterpart they are not structured or resourced to respond rapidly in the event of a crisis. Unless the Reserve Components can transform the way they do business and adopt a more expeditionary mindset it is likely that they will become less and less relevant to the Total Force. Maybe it is time to resurrect the Minuteman system? The MINUTEMEN concept would create a more rapidly deployable expeditionary Reserve Component force. This campaign capable force would fill a current void in available manpower while enhancing the capability of the Reserve Components. The concept is based on the Division Ready Brigade (DRB) Concept already used by the Active Component. Under this concept all Reserve Component units would rotate through pre-planned and tiered alert and readiness levels over a five year period. Under the MINUTEMEN system all Reserve Component functions (i.e. training recruiting etc.) would be based on the units position in the five year cycle. The MINUTEMAN system would allow the reserves to remain relevant and ready as the Regular Army transforms to adopt an expeditionary force structure and mindset.

Book excerpt: In this exciting classic early reader, Nathaniel Benchly re-creates what it must have been like for a young boy to fight in the Battle of Lexington. Arnold Lobel's vivid pictures give a poignant reality to the famous battle that marked the beginning of the American Revolution. This is historical fiction that pulls in young readers in first and second grade, even reluctant readers. Great for home or classroom units on and discussions about colonial America and the start of the American Revolution. "Benchley's expressive words and Lobel's vivid drawings portray a realistic story," Publishers Weekly wrote. Father and son rushed to the village green. Other Minutemen were already there. Through the long night they waited and waited. Then, at dawn, the soldiers came!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bancroft Prize–winning classic of American history now in a revised and expanded edition with a new preface and afterword by the author. On April 19, 1775, the American Revolution began at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. The “shot heard round the world” catapulted this sleepy New England town into the height of revolutionary fervor, and Concord went on to become the intellectual capital of the new republic. The town—future home to Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne—soon came to symbolize devotion to liberty, intellectual freedom, and the stubborn integrity of rural life. In The Minutemen and Their World, Robert A. Gross has written a remarkably subtle and detailed reconstruction of the lives and community of this special place, and a compelling interpretation of the American Revolution as a social movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look inside a controversial movement They live in the suburbs of Tennessee and Indiana. They fought in Vietnam and Desert Storm. They speak about an older, better America, an America that once was, and is no more. And for the past decade, they have come to the U.S. / Mexico border to hunt for illegal immigrants. Who are the Minutemen? Patriots? Racists? Vigilantes? Harel Shapira lived with the Minutemen and patrolled the border with them, seeking neither to condemn nor praise them, but to understand who they are and what they do. Challenging simplistic depictions of these men as right-wing fanatics with loose triggers, Shapira discovers a group of men who long for community and embrace the principles of civic engagement. Yet these desires and convictions have led them to a troubling place. Shapira takes you to that place—a stretch of desert in southern Arizona, where he reveals that what draws these men to the border is not simply racism or anti-immigrant sentiments, but a chance to relive a sense of meaning and purpose rooted in an older life of soldiering. They come to the border not only in search of illegal immigrants, but of lost identities and experiences. Now with a new afterword by the author, Waiting for José brings understanding to a group of people in search of lost identities and experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Minuteman: A Technical History of the Missile That Defined American Nuclear Warfare, David K. Stumpf demystifies the intercontinental ballistic missile program that was conceived at the end of the Eisenhower administration as a key component of the US nuclear strategy of massive retaliation. Although its nuclear warhead may have lacked power relative to that of the Titan II, the Minuteman more than made up for this in terms of numbers and readiness to launch—making it the ultimate ICBM. Minuteman offers a fascinating look at the technological breakthroughs necessary to field this weapon system that has served as a powerful component of the strategic nuclear triad for more than half a century. With exacting detail, Stumpf examines the construction of launch and launch control facilities; innovations in solid propellant, lightweight inertial guidance systems, and lightweight reentry vehicle development; and key flight tests and operational flight programs—all while situating the Minuteman program in the context of world events. In doing so, the author reveals how the historic missile has adapted to changing defense strategies—from counterforce to mutually assured destruction to sufficiency.

The epic based-on-true story of forbidden love and unholy heroism is set against the backdrop of an America ripped apart by the Great Depression and on the brink of war. Newark, NJ, 1938. Millions are out of work and robbed of dignity. A shadow Hitler-Nazi party called the German-American Bund that is led by an American Fuhrer threatens to swallow democracy. In this dangerous time of star-spangled fascism, a romance forms between the Jewish boxer, Yael and the daughter of the enemy, Krista. But 1930s America pulls them apart as Krista’s people want Yael’s dead. Then Yael is recruited by the mob to go undercover for the FBI against her people and bring down the German-American Bund. Author Leslie K. Barry captures an authentic and brave portrait of a lost America searching for identity, preserving legacy and saving its soul. It is a heartbreaking novel that crosses generations as it honors the fragility of freedom.

Book excerpt: The Minute Man is a fictionalized account of the events leading up to, and including, the Battles of Lexington and Concord which took place in April 1775. This story focuses on three sets of players. First, there were the scheming Boston Sons of Liberty, including Sam Adams, Paul Revere and Joseph Warren, which drove the authorities to distraction and missteps. The second group is the British Army, officers and men, led by General Gage who became the pointed end of London’s stick. The last actors, for whom the book is named, are the townsfolk and farmers who made up the bulk of armed resistance the first day of the fighting. Both the agitators and the army brass had their vested interests, but the common man—both enlisted soldiers and villagers—bore the inevitable brunt of the conflict. The tale is one of not only of revolution, but of a nascent civil war, as a brother turns on his brother, and a wife betrays her husband. It is an emotional portrayal of what did, and what might have, happened in the character’s lives over those days. While the book starts with the Boston Tea Party, it was unclear to the participants at the time that it would be the opening scene of the Revolutionary War, which did not cease till many years later in the South.

Book excerpt: A powerful first collection of poems which bear witness to difficult lives in Latin America, in the mining towns of the USA, in prairie families ruined by hardship and losses and incest. Pamela Porter's poetry has both gravitas and grace, it speaks about important matters beyond the personal and domestic concerns of the writer herself, yet many of the poems fall within the personal narrative tradition. These poems are earthy and metaphysical, personal and universal, geographically and historically diverse. The details are beautifully, often hauntingly, realized. Porter keeps her own sense of outrage in check, creating startling and invasive images and refusing to trespass by bludgeoning or imposing a response on the reader. There's an undercurrent of hope, of confidence in individuals' capacity to survive and make meaningful lives in the wake of tragedy. We come to the end of the book disturbed, deeply stirred, but not devastated.

Book excerpt: The Minutemen, under Robert DePugh's leadership, existed for a relatively short period of years during the 1960s. They were a vicously anti-Communist, militant organization that believed a Comunist invasion of the United States was imminent, most likely through internal subversion. The organization advocated extremist tactics in what they believed was going to be a geurrilla war against communism on American soil. Eventually the Minutemen's extreme nature and propensity for violence brought them to the attention of law enforcement, most specifically the FBI. After Robert DePugh and other members were convicted of firearms violations and sent to prison, the leaderless organization faded into obscurity. The aim of this book is to provide an accurate historical record of the Minutemen because previous research concerning the Minutemen has often been severely biased against the organization. This book is for the reader who is interested in militant organizations and right-wing extremist groups.
