Book excerpt: In the 1920s, the Campbells move west to the isolated wilderness of northern Alberta to begin a new life of homesteading. With the depression engulfing Canada and the United States, the family struggles with poverty and staying alive under harsh conditions. A neighboring family of Indian ancestry provides needed food and advice. For little Jimmy, this friendship introduces him to wildlife lore and a respect for all the natural kingdom. Jimmy comes to know tragedy and hardship. The family's shanty burns to the ground in mid-winter. Dad suffers from personal depression and suicidal thoughts. Mum must leave the family for medical treatment for weeks at a time. Jimmy is thought to be near death and is rushed to a remote hospital by a trapper with a dogsled. Yet there are times of delight and joy: catching fish, eating an apple, riding a bike up and down mountains, listening to animals in the woods, skinny dipping. He is shocked and awed by the beauty of the mountains. Books and the world outside of his settlement begin to fascinate him. When he is a teenager, the family leaves their home and debts and moves farther west to ranch country in the mountains of British Columbia. Jim is devastated to learn that he was a bastard child adopted by his parents. He perseveres with his studies and odd jobs. He is encouraged by teachers who see his potential, and he easily graduates first in his high school class. Jim leaves with plans to join the military as a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot in World War II. A young person reading this novel should gain an appreciation of factors influencing a youth's life: family, society, environment, government. Even though roads seem insurmountable, people can shape their own lives in marvelous ways.

Book excerpt: The True Story Behind the Events on 9/11 that Inspired Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Come from Away, Featuring All New Material from the Author When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news. Over the course of those four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime. As a show of thanks, scholarship funds for the children of Gander have been formed and donations have been made to provide new computers for the schools. This book recounts the inspiring story of the residents of Gander, Canada, whose acts of kindness have touched the lives of thousands of people and been an example of humanity and goodwill.

Evie and her uncle Jim have just moved to an isolated cabin in a remote beach town--a far cry from their hometown of Melbourne. But Evie isn't her real name. And Jim isn't really her uncle. Jim tells Evie she did something terrible back home, that he's hiding her to protect her. But Evie can't remember anything about that night--for all she knows, he's lying. As fragments of her memory return, she starts to wonder if Jim is really her savior...or her captor. In a riveting novel that fearlessly plumbs the darkest recesses of the mind, J.P. Pomare explores the fragility of memory and the potential in everyone to hide the truth--even from themselves.

Book excerpt: A beautifully written and evocative memoir of pain and redemption, of hurt and healing, from an actress whose private life and personal choices have made her a household name. "My life is a life movies are made of," wrote Anne Heche in the proposal for her memoir. Yet what is truly surprising about Heche is that the most publicized event of her past -- her romance with Ellen DeGeneres -- is only one development in a fascinating and difficult life that has included more than its share of heartache and tragedy. Heche's memoir reveals the woman behind the headlines, one who has conquered overwhelming odds. Far from a celebrity memoir, this is an empowering and thought-provoking book guaranteed to surprise and inspire.

Book excerpt: A man survives a shipwreck—only to finds his memory wiped clean and a stranger at his bedside claiming to be his wife The Alice Arden was bound for Scotland until she hit a nasty current and was smashed to bits on the rocky cliffs off the coast of Sussex. A man believed to be a survivor of the shipwreck is found unconscious and taken to the hospital. Lost for almost thirty-six hours, the man lying in a strange bed has no memory of who he is. Yet images haunt him: a light swinging down in the fog, illuminating a string of enormous emeralds and pearls. And now a woman has come for him; Nesta Riddell claims that he’s her husband, Jimmy Riddell. Caroline Leigh suspects the man in question is her distant cousin, Jim Randal, who was supposed to be on the doomed steamer. With nothing but a torn scrap of paper, she embarks on a quest that takes her to a village in the English countryside. As Caroline searches for answers, the man she’s trying to save struggles to fill the gaps in his memory. But the more he remembers, the greater the danger he and Caroline face—because someone will do anything to retrieve a priceless cache of stolen jewels, someone who has killed before and is prepared to kill again.
