Book excerpt: The final unpublished novel by MWA Grandmaster – a wild, romantic road trip across America by taxi cab – demonstrates why this beloved author is so fondly remembered and so dearly missed. “A book by this guy is cause for happiness.” Stephen King DONALD E. WESTLAKE GOES OFF THE BEATEN PATH In 1977, one of the world’s finest crime novelists turned his pen to suspense of a very different sort – and the results have never been published, until now. Fans of mystery fiction have often pondered whether it would be possible to write a suspense novel without any crime at all, and in CALL ME A CAB the masterful Donald E. Westlake answered the question in his inimitable style. You won’t find any crime in these pages – but what you will find is a wonderful suspense story, about a New York City taxi driver hired to drive a beautiful woman all the way across America, from Manhattan to Los Angeles, where the biggest decision of her life is waiting to be made. From Pennsylvania to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Nevada on the way to California, the characters’ odyssey takes them through uncharted territory – on the map and in their lives. It’s Westlake at his witty, thought-provoking best, and it proves that a page-turner doesn’t need to have a bomb set to go off at the end of it in order to keep sparks flying every step of the way.

Call Me A Therapist! is certainly not an Oprah Book Club winner, but it doesnt pretend to be..Mertens aims to entertain and he certainly succeeds" - Meghan Stephens - Lake Central Scout Newspaper Book Review, IN (5-02-02) "Dont Call Me A Cab! Call Me A Therapist! explores a mans bizarre relationships formed with others" - Larry McCarthy, The Times Newspapers Book Review, IN (5-27-01) "In most books, main characters usually have names, not in W.R. Mertens book....refreshing change" - Herald-News Book Review, IL (6-15-01) "The man has neighbors who host teenage parties with scantily clad - sexy girl dancers as entertainment - a great book!" - C. Claessens, Chicago, IL Following in the style of the late Erma Bombeck, his book, outling the sometimes serious, sometimes very humourous trip by a young man to his therapists couch, spouts off about various problems, relatives, friends and best of all, his employment at a community college. The main character, who is never named in the book, nor is the therapist, tells his "doctor" whats troubling him. He goes on to talk about everything from having relatives which he really cant deal with, but trys to. His aunt and grandmother are among some of the more humourous characters in the first section of the book, where the aunt is akin to Adolph Hitler and the grandmother wears cooked spaghetti in meat sauce ever so attractively on her head during a visit from her parish priest. Other characters abound in this delightful book of wisdom and insight into what could possibly be a normal, dysfunctional family, but its not. The parish priest is a loony, grandmothers housekeeper is to be believed, and the mans employer/supervisors are either drunken fools, openly gay or just out and out related to the mob in a mixed web of corruption. "A delightfully enjoyable book, funny but sad at the same time" - E. Kallay of IN.

Book excerpt: This is a book of anecdotes - a product of my reflections on both my personal and professional life as a young Tunisian female journalist, coming to work for the 'largest broadcaster in the world' and live in the big city, that is London all by myself. The book traces the Tunisia I grew up in in the sixties - few years after it gained its independence from France, where my parents and I belonged to very different worlds. I come from a traditional family and society where a girl - no matter how educated - only leaves her parents' house to her husband's. So, for my family to allow me that, was something totally unheard of. The book highlights some of the most impressionable experiences I had while working in the Bush House offices in my home department; on secondment to other departments or on work trips abroad for the BBC and other places. At some point and for many years, I was the only Tunisian in the whole organisation. This book also traces what I make of the changes that Tunisia has been through over the years, especially since 2011 and the beginning of what's referred to as 'The Arab Spring' that started there and spread like wildfire to other countries in the region. London is also the place where I met my late husband, the Pan-Africanist Dr Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem. We met by chance three times in three different places before we could speak and the rest as they say is history! I was probably the first Tunisian girl to marry a Nigerian. This book tackles the many challenges our union faced, the issue of identity for our two mixed-race daughters - something very rare back home - and for myself as a Tunisian - British or British-Tunisian, having spent longer in the UK than I did in Tunisia.

Book excerpt: From former football star and bestselling author John Ed Bradley comes a searing look at love, life, and football in the face of racial adversity. “Heartbreaking,” says Laurie Halse Anderson, author ofSpeak. Growing up in Louisiana in the late 1960s, Tater Henry has experienced a lot of prejudice. His town is slow to desegregate and slower still to leave behind deep-seated prejudice. Despite the town's sensibilities, Rodney Boulett and his twin sister Angie befriend Tater, and as their friendship grows stronger, Tater and Rodney become an unstoppable force on the football field. That is, until Rodney sees Tater and Angie growing closer, too, and Rodney's world is turned upside down. Teammates, best friends—Rodney's world is threatened by a hate he did not know was inside of him. As the town learns to accept notions like a black quarterback, some changes may be too difficult to accept. “John Ed Bradley skillfully shines a beam of humanity through the prism of the game, revealing to us the full spectrum of its colors, from love to hate, bigotry to tolerance, and devotion to betrayal. Anyone who ever played high school football or loved someone who has should read this book.” —Tim Green, retired NFL player and bestselling author

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of cognitive science, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind investigates jokes that play on some aspect of the structure and function of language. In so doing, Debra Aarons shows that these 'linguistic jokes' can evoke our tacit knowledge of the language we use. Analyzing hilarious examples from movies, plays and books, Jokes and the Linguistic Mind demonstrates that tacit linguistic knowledge must become conscious for linguistic jokes to be understood. The book examines jokes that exploit pragmatic, semantic, morphological, phonological and semantic features of language, as well as jokes that use more than one language and jokes that are about language itself. Additionally, the text explores the relationship between cryptic crossword clues and linguistic jokes in order to demonstrate the difference between tacit knowledge of language and rules of language use that are articulated for a particular purpose. With its use of jokes as data and its highly accessible explanations of complex linguistic concepts, this book is an engaging supplementary text for introductory courses in linguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive science. It will also be of interest to scholars in translation studies, applied linguistics and philosophy of language.

Book excerpt: Like the best of memoir writing, My Invisible Scars is alternately brutally honest, sad, triumphant, tense, motivating, uncomfortable, and unforgettable. Relying on journals that she has kept since childhood, Canadian author Willa-Mae E. Scot articulately recounts in (mostly) chronological order the highs and lows of her long life, beginning with her early childhood in a small Saskatchewan town. Willa-Mae writes candidly about terrible disappointments, life-threatening ordeals, and her incredible and unwavering determination to put aside countless negative experiences, and live, embrace, and enjoy life to the fullest. This memoir is a must-read book for anyone whose life has been derailed by the unexpected loss of a loved one, violence, family break-up, infidelity, addictions, abandonment, or by poor, sometimes non-existent, choices. Those who have suffered through trauma and struggled to put that trauma behind them will see their journey reflected in these pages and be reassured that, even when down at rock bottom, they can find a way to be happy again. My Invisible Scars is instructive and inspiring, enlightening and engaging, and a great testament to its author’s tremendous courage and forthrightness. Most of all it is a testament to her enviable ability to offer forgiveness to the many people who have hurt her, and then gracefully move forward in life.

Clementine Daly knows she’s the black sheep. Her wealthy, powerful family has watched her very closely since she almost got caught in an embarrassing scandal a few years ago. So when Clementine’s sent on a mission to live up to the Daly name, politely declining isn’t an option. Of course, the last thing she does before boarding the plane is to grab a stranger’s phone by mistake—leaving the hunky journalist with her phone. Soon his sexy voice is on the line, but he doesn’t know her real name, or her famous pedigree—which is just the way Clementine likes it. Despite all the hassles, Justin Mueller is intrigued to realize that the beautiful brown-eyed girl he met at the airport is suddenly at his fingertips. They agree to exchange phones when they’re both back in town, but after a week of flirty texts and wonderfully intimate conversations, Justin doesn’t want to let her go. The only problem? It turns out that Clemetine has been lying to him about, well, everything. Except for the one thing two people can’t fake, the only thing that matters: The heat between them is for real.
