Book excerpt: Marine protected areas (MPAs) are widely used to rebuild depleted populations for exploited species, but their effectiveness hinges on adequate knowledge of the factors dictating population dynamics for target organisms. Estimates of connectivity via larval dispersal often are included in MPA design, but movement patterns, habitat associations, and habitat-specific survival rates of juveniles and adults, which often are unknown, also will influence MPA effectiveness. California spiny lobsters (Panulirus interruptus Randall) are the target of intense commercial and recreational fishing in southern California, but we lack basic information about home range and habitat use of lobsters to determine if MPAs planned for the region will enhance abundance. Working within and outside of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve (LJER) in southern California, we (i) quantified lobster movement patterns and home ranges over short (nightly -- weekly) and long (1 -- 14 months) time scales using acoustic telemetry, (ii) surveyed lobsters to determine day and night habitat associations, and (iii) tethered lobsters to assess habitat-specific predation risk. Lobsters exhibited high site fidelity, proclivities for homing, and small home ranges (geometric mean of 651 m2 and 5,912 m2 per week based on 50% and 95% Kernel Utilization Distributions (KUDs), respectively) that encompassed only a fraction of a small MPA, even over periods of several months. Lobsters were strongly associated with rocky habitat during the day (when in shelters) but were associated with the red algae Plocamium cartilagineum at night (when feeding). Lobster relative survival rates were high across vegetated and unvegetated habitats at night, but lobsters were protected from predators by surfgrass (Phyllopsadix torreyi) habitat during the day. Our results highlight the need to consider how movement patterns vary over short and long time scales, and how patterns of habitat use may vary from day to night for nocturnally active species such as spiny lobsters when planning MPAs.

Many prey species utilize refuge habitat and exhibit gregarious behavior to reduce the risk of predation, and these strategies may be particularly advantageous to early life stages that are highly susceptible to predators. In this study, I worked with the California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus Randall) to explore patterns in habitat utilization and sheltering behavior on southern California rocky reefs, and to determine how these associations and behaviors influence survival of subadult (5.0 - 6.0 cm carapace length, CL) lobsters. The California spiny lobster is a gregarious, shelter-dwelling species whose distribution, abundance, and survival may be closely tied to habitat structure at a variety of scales, particularly for subadult lobsters that are vulnerable to a variety of predators. It is also an economically and ecologically valuable species that is among those targeted for protection in California's recently established South Coast Region marine protected areas (MPAs). Many ecological processes are tied to species-habitat interactions, and MPAs may have little impact on populations if appropriate and complex habitat is lacking within an MPA. Therefore, an important component of my study was to provide baseline information on spiny lobster behavior and habitat associations that may be used in future efforts to determine whether MPAs are positively affecting P. interruptus populations, and if behavioral shifts occur due to changing conditions within MPAs. In part one of my study, I assessed habitat characteristics and lobster behavior (habitat associations and shelter use) within and outside of four of the South Coast Region MPAs within southern California's heavily fished coastal waters. To link lobster presence and behavior to benthic habitat features at the regional level, and to determine if these linkages vary among locations, I conducted SCUBA-based transect surveys of rocky reefs within and outside of each MPA. I recorded substrate composition, relief, and dominant vegetation cover to characterize habitat, as well as the number, size, and shelter type utilized by all lobsters encountered. I found that substrate composition and algal assemblage varied across the region and that each MPA had distinct habitat characteristics. As a result, the odds of finding lobsters were related to different habitat variables within each MPA, and no single benthic feature reliably predicted the occurrence of lobsters across the entire study region. Lobster density varied only slightly across MPAs, and lobsters were generally gregarious across the study region. However, lobster sheltering behavior varied among MPAs, which may be due to variation in habitat parameters and biotic factors (e.g., predation risk and intraspecific interactions) across the southern California region.

Book excerpt: Recent pier construction activity in San Diego Bay necessitated an evaluation of its impact on the spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus). Lobster movements were monitored by placing standard commercial lobster traps at sixteen selected stations in San Diego Bay. Various data were recorded and lobsters were tagged and subsequently released. This report documents the findings of the study. (Author).

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of the current and future effects of climate change on the world’s fisheries and aquaculture operations The first book of its kind, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture explores the impacts of climate change on global fisheries resources and on marine aquaculture. It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.
