During those three years, animated movies, art, bicycles, blueberries, church, dancing school, friends (one with ESP), music, even murder, impact the lives of mother and son until they board a train bound for Fresno, California on the day after 16-year-old Jerry's graduation. Staying a few months with Minnie's sister and her capable, one-armed Welsh husband until Jerry can become breadwinner, the Nobles embark on a new world of adventure in a strange city. They live independently in rented cottages and explore wartime California by bicycle and friends' automobiles, seeing the sights from Fresno to Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Yosemite National Park. As clerk, doorman, draftsman, and student, Jerry encounters optometrists, preachers, projectionists, sailors, singers, soldiers, usherettes. People from all backgrounds and all walks of life help him and his mother depend upon and build their faith in uncertain times.

Book excerpt: Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie examines the cultural and political significance of lyrics by beloved songwriter and activist Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie. Divided into chapters covering specific historical topics such as race relations and lynchings, famous outlaws, the Great Depression, and unions, the book takes an in-depth look at how Guthrie manipulated his lyrics to explore pressing issues and to bring greater political and economic awareness to the common people. Incorporating the best of both historical and literary perspectives, Mark Allan Jackson references primary sources including interviews, recordings, drawings, and writings. He includes a variety of materials from the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and the Woody Guthrie Archives. Many of these have never before been widely available. The result provides new insights into one of America's most intriguing icons. Prophet Singer offers an analysis of the creative impulse behind and ideals expressed in Guthrie's song lyrics. Details from the artist's personal life as well as his interactions with political and artistic movements from the first half of the twentieth century afford readers the opportunity to understand how Guthrie's deepest beliefs influenced and found voice in the lyrics that are now known and loved by millions.

Book excerpt: "This is a knockabout satiric tale of three on-the-skids vaudeville troupers -- Jerry, Mae, and George -- who decide to head for Hollywood and try their luck at the newest craze: "talkies." After a hilarious series of consistent blunders, the unassuming George is carried to fame and fortune becoming (for a short time, at least) a captain of The Industry. Book Synopsis All the Days Past, All the Days to Come by : Mildred D. Taylor
Download or read book All the Days Past, All the Days to Come written by Mildred D. Taylor and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saga of the Logan family--made famous in the Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry--concludes in a deeply fulfilling story, now available in paperback. In her tenth book, Mildred Taylor completes her sweeping saga about the Logan family of Mississippi, which is also the story of the civil rights movement in America of the 20th century. Cassie Logan, first met in Song of the Trees and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, is a young woman now, searching for her place in the world, a journey that takes her from Toledo to California, to law school in Boston, and, ultimately, in the 60s, home to Mississippi to participate in voter registration. She is witness to the now-historic events of the century: the Great Migration north, the rise of the civil rights movement, preceded and precipitated by the racist society of America, and the often violent confrontations that brought about change. Rich, compelling storytelling is Ms. Taylor's hallmark, and she fulfills expectations as she brings to a close the stirring family story that has absorbed her for over forty years. It is a story she was born to tell.
Download or read book Where's Miss Mary? written by Liz Hamlin and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ruth McBain becomes a widow in her mid-forties, she decides to make a drastic change in her life. Her twenty-five year marriage to Tom McBain, a prominent lawyer in Avalon, Maryland, a small town on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay, had eased their empty-nest syndrome when their son and daughter left for college and later for marriages in distant states. While Tom was alive, Ruth's world had orbited smoothly in familiar paths. His sudden death from a heart attack leaves a vacuum which friends and customary activities fail to fill. She brushes aside well-meaning friends' advice to sell the house which she and Tom ha spent their entire married life, a home which stands a half-mile down a quiet country road with only one house next door to keep it company. She dismisses suggestions that she move into one of the new suburbs which are popping up like rabbit warrens on land once sacred to soybeans and corn. Ruth McBain is conventional person with conventional views. Houses, like friendships, must pass the test of time to be accepted. Ruth's unconventional decision to become a foster mother to a little girl about whom she knew nothing other than that the child had been in and out of several foster homes during the six years she had lived, disturbs her friends, who remind her of the problems and perils that even two-parent families find difficult to handle in the "anything goes" decade of the 1990's. She sooths her friends apprehensions by assuring them that Miss Winters, the social worker assigned to Lark's case, will instantly be on call if needed. She rarely is. None of the dire predictions made by Ruth's friends materialize. The lies LArk tells are small and promptly admitted; her tendency to pocket a bit of loose change lessens. Lark was not a thief in the harsh sense of the word. She was an indiscriminate little rat pack, a female Artful Dodger who immediately pled guilty to petty thefts and cheerfully returned the purloined articles without apology, denial, or excuses. The child was not into grand larceny; she pilfered articles which Ruth would gladly have given her had she asked for them; inexpensive clip-on earrings which Ruth hadn't worn since he got her ears pierced in honor of the diamond earrings Tom had given her on their tenth anniversary. A fake garnet bracelet with a broken clasp; an amber candy dish; last summer's sequinned sunglasses, and every once in a while an all-out emptying of the small change kept in a small piggy bank on the shelf above the sink. At first it had been hard for Ruth to keep Miss Winter's advice and "stay cool" when Lark helped herself to the small change in the piggy bank, but as the weeks passed, Ruth slowly adjusted to Miss Winter's explanation that to Lark, coins were just trinkets on par with earrings and sunglasses, and always returned in full to the piggy bank. The only problem which Ruth finds hard to accept is the child's determination to keep Ruth at arm's length; she resists Ruth's attempts to hug her, moves aside if Ruth reaches out for her. Ruth tells herself that if Lark was consistent in her withdrawal from everyone, her reaction could be a holdover from something which happened in the child's troubled past. But the withdrawal of physical and emotional contact is not consistent; it does not extend to Mary Burdock, th woman who lives in the only other house on the lane. In Ruth's opinion, Mark Burdock is pleasant enough, but definitely not a spell-binder. A woman who is a bit too plump, a bit too average, a bit too reserved to merit the attention, let alone the adoration, of an unusual child like Lark. It just didn't make sense that Lark fluttered across the two yards, drawn to Mary Burdock like a gnat to a lightbulb. What did a woman who appeared to be getting perilously close to the thirty year mark have in common with a child who had just recently blown out six candles on a birthday cake? Ruth's attempt to understand the strang
Download or read book No Barriers written by Erik Weihenmayer and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 Colorado Book Awards finalist in Creative Nonfiction, andNational Bestseller and Honorable Mention Award Winner in the Outdoor Literature category of the 2017 National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) “A beautiful book about family and finding a way to achieve more than you ever thought possible.” —Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author Erik Weihenmayer is the first and only blind person to summit Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Descending carefully, he and his team picked their way across deep crevasses and through the deadly Khumbu Icefall; when the mountain was finally behind him, Erik knew he was going to live. His expedition leader slapped him on the back and said something that would affect the course of Erik’s life: “Don’t make Everest the greatest thing you ever do.” No Barriers is Erik’s response to that challenge. It is the moving story of his journey since descending Mount Everest: from leading expeditions around the world with blind Tibetan teenagers to helping injured soldiers climb their way home from war, from adopting a son from Nepal to facing the most terrifying reach of his life: to solo kayak the thunderous whitewater of the Grand Canyon. Along the course of Erik’s journey, he meets other trailblazers—adventurers, scientists, artists, and activists—who, despite trauma, hardship, and loss, have broken through barriers of their own. These pioneers show Erik surprising ways forward that surpass logic and defy traditional thinking. Like the rapids of the Grand Canyon, created by inexorable forces far beneath the surface, No Barriers is a dive into the heart and mind at the core of the turbulent human experience. It is an exploration of the light that burns in all of us, the obstacles that threaten to extinguish that light, and the treacherous ascent towards growth and rebirth.
