Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetable Summary, 1978 Average yields for celery, cucumbers, escarole, lettuce and green peppers increased during the year but yields declined for snap beans, cabbage, squash, sweet corn, eggplant, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes, water melons and strawberries. Improved varieties, cultural practices and weather conditions can affect crop yields considerably. Season average prices of snap beans, celery, sweet corn, escarole, lettuce, radishes, watermelons and straw berries were higher than a year earlier. Season average prices for cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, green peppers, potatoes and squash were below a year ago. Land preparation, planting and transplanting were very active in most areas of the state during July. Grow ing conditions were generally good to excellent over most of the farming areas during August. Planting activity progressed favorably. Heavy rains and cloudy skies made up the weather picture the first of September. A tropical depression dropped from 1 to 8 inches of rainfall over most farming areas before moving into the Gulf. Harvest gained momentum during October and November as rainfall was limited to a few light to moderate showers. Temperatures during early December were mostly mild. A cold front entered the farming areas in mid and late December, lowering temperatures into the 3o's on both occasions. The first front was accompanied by light, spotty frost and little or no damage occurred to vegetables. The last front caused light damage to tender foliage. Much of January was characterized by temperatures in the low 3o's. Light frost and cold winds caused light to moderate top foliage burn to tender crops. Precipitation was variable, ranging from a trace to less than an inch. Winds were generally light to moderate. The month of February was dominated by cold wea ther and near freezing temperatures. Several cold fronts moved through the vegetable growing areas, dropping nighttime temperatures into the high zo's and low 3o's.
