This book was released on 1979 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapid scan particle detector (RSPD) for electrons and protons in the range of 0.05 keV to greater than a few MeV has been designed, constructed, and calibrated. The RSPD uses electrostatic analyzers (ESA's) with Spiraltron electron multipliers (SEM's) for 0.05 to 60 keV particles, and solid-state detector telescopes for the higher energy particles. The ESA's have been extensively calibrated at the Rice University Calibration Facility, using 0.04 to 45 keV electrons and 0.1 to 30 keV ions, and the results are given in this report. The calibration procedure for the SSS's is also described, and the results are tabulated. The RSPD was launched in the SCATHA satellite on 30 January 1979 and is known as the SC5 instrument. Orbit operations have been excellent, with the SSS's operating nearly 100 percent of the time and the ESA's operating about 50 percent time operation at a higher bias level is achieving a sufficiently stable operation that should allow reliable data-taking for at least the one year- design lifetime.

Book excerpt: A preliminary study of the 100 eV to approx. 1 MeV plasma environment encountered by the P78-2 Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite during its initial operation period was conducted. Forty-four days of 10-min averages of the four moments of the electron and ion distribution functions calculated from the SC5 and SC9 energetic particle measurements were analyzed to determine occurrence frequency, local time variation, geomagnetic activity variation, and L-shell variation. The single and double Maxwellian parameters derived from the four moments were similarly analyzed. The interrelationships between the moments and derived parameters were computed and the results compared with the ATS-5 and ATS-6 atlas of Garrett et al (1980). Results of this analysis establish a baseline range for the SCATHA plasma environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of data from the first year of the P78-2 SCATHA satellite operations showed that a highest level spacecraft frame charging (phi sub f) both in sunlight ( -340 V) and in eclipse (> -8 kV) occurred on 24 April 1979. Analysis of the data indicates that if the sunlight charging environment had been present during eclipse, the vehicle would have charged in excess of 15 kV which is above any known charging level observed to date for the SCATHA satellite. Therefore, the environment at the peak of the sunlight charging at approx. 0650 UT 24 April 1979 was chosen for this worst case study. The environment at this time is characterized by an injection of high energy (30-335 keV) electron fluxes whose combined current correlates with phi sub f with a correlation coefficient of 0.95. The fluxes were highly anisotropic, maximizing perpendicular to the magnetic field. The low energy (

Book excerpt: A study of the plasma environment encountered by the P78-2 Spacecraft Charging At High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite during its operation between March 1979 and June 1980 was conducted and reported in the SCATHA Environmental Atlas (AFGL-TR-84-0002). Summary plots of much of the data used in the Atlas are presented in two volumes. The first volume contains magnetic field data and spacecraft frame potential data. The second volume contains low and medium energy range electron and ion data, medium energy range ion composition data and high energy electron data. The data are presented in 24-hour plots.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluxes of trapped 20 keV-1 MeV electrons and ions observed by SCATHA from 5 to 8 R sub E are analyzed for a magnetically quiet and subsequent disturbed period to determine the contribution adiabatic variations make to the observed large variations. The magnetic field is modeled by a dipole distorted by the sum of an azimuthally symmetric and an asymmetric perturbation, which perturbations are empirically determined functions of time. Distribution functions for the disturbed period are predicted from those observed in the quiet period, assuming conservation of the three adiabatic invariants for magnetically trapped particles. The disturbance discussed here is observed during the ascending portion of the SCATHA orbit. The disturbance is first encountered when SCATHA crosses L=6.2R sub E, MLT=2140. It is characterized by a systematic weakening in the plasma sheet magnetic field and concurrent dropouts in the 90 deg. pitch angle high energy electron and ion fluxes. The electron fluxes and the magnetic field remain low for the remainder of this ascending leg, but the ion fluxes recover somewhat for L>7R sub E. The IMF B sub z is small but steadily northward for over 24 hours preceding this period. The solar wind velocity decreases at a slow rate before and during this period, while the solar wind ion density is steadily increasing. For magnetic field decompression, the theory based on conservation of the adiabatic invariants predicts deceleration of equatorially mirroring particles, causing reduction in the fluxes observed at a given energy similar to those seen in the early phase of this event.
Book Synopsis Real Time, Automatic Vehicle Potential Determination from ESA Measurements by : Stanley L. Spiegel

This book was released on 1985 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of spacecraft charging at high altitudes is an important one for Air Force applications; indeed a major effort (SCATHA Project) has been undertaken to understand this phenomenon. Quite simply, when a space vehicle at geosynchronous orbit, interacting with its plasma environment, acquires a high negative potential (of the order of 1/2 kV), it is possible that onboard instrumentation will be damaged by electrical discharge between differentially charged surfaces of the spacecraft. Thus it is important to activate a discharge mechanism as soon as a dangerously high potential develops. This means it is necessay to have a reliable method of determining the real time vehicle potential, or more specifically, distinguishing whether or not the potential has reached or exceeded critical levels. An algorithm incorporating an onboard microprocessor to analyze data obtained by the vehicle, and determine the extent of charging, is desirable. Computational simplicity and speed are important considerations in the design of such an algorithm. Examination of data from the P78-2 satellite has indicated that electrostatic analyzer (ESA) ion count data, could serve as input to an algorithm designed to fulfill the aforementioned objectives. The development and testing of one such algorithm, referred to as the count ration algorithm, are described.
