Book excerpt: An unforgettable coming-of-age novel that becomes a profound mediation on life, death, and lifelong friendship. Everyone has a Tully Dawson: the friend who defines your life. In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, James and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films and the rebel spirit. With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth: a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain. There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has news--news that forces the life-long friends to confront their own mortality head-on. What follows is an incredibly moving examination of the responsibilities and obligations we have to those we love. Mayflies is at once a finely-tuned drama about the delicacy and impermanence of human connection and an urgent inquiry into some of the most important questions of all: Who are we? What do we owe to our friends? And what does it mean to love another person amidst tragedy?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Boswell (1740–1795), best known as the biographer of Samuel Johnson, was also a lawyer, journalist, diarist, and an insightful chronicler of a pivotal epoch in Western history. This fascinating collection, edited by Paul Tankard, presents a generous and varied selection of Boswell’s journalistic writings, most of which have not been published since the eighteenth century. It offers a new angle on the history of journalism, an idiosyncratic view of literature, politics, and public life in late eighteenth-century Britain, and an original perspective on a complex and engaging literary personality.
Book Synopsis Introduction to New Caledonia by : Gilad James, PhD
Download or read book Introduction to New Caledonia written by Gilad James, PhD and published by Gilad James Mystery School. This book was released on with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Caledonia is a French territory located in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of a main island, known as Grande Terre, and several smaller islands. The population of New Caledonia is around 280,000, with the majority of the population living in the capital city of Noumea on Grande Terre. The official language is French, but the indigenous Kanak people also speak several indigenous languages. The economy of New Caledonia is largely dependent on the mining industry, specifically nickel production, which accounts for around 80% of the country’s export revenue. Tourism is also important, with visitors attracted to the country’s beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and unique cultural heritage. New Caledonia has a complex cultural and political history. It was originally inhabited by the Kanak people, who had their own distinct cultures and languages. The territory was then colonized by the French in the 19th century and used as a penal colony. In the 20th century, the decolonization movement led to a rise in Kanak nationalism and demands for independence. This resulted in a period of violence and conflict, known as the “Events” of the 1980s, which eventually led to the signing of the Noumea Accord in 1998. The accord provided for a gradual transfer of power from France to New Caledonia, with a referendum on independence planned for 2021. The political situation in New Caledonia remains contentious, with sharp divisions between those who support independence and those who wish to maintain ties with France.

Download or read book Caledonian Jews written by Nathan Abrams and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full history of the Jews in Scotland who lived outside Edinburgh and Glasgow. The work focuses on seven communities from the borders to the highlands: Aberdeen, Ayr, Dundee, Dunfermline, Falkirk, Greenock, and Inverness. Each of these communities was of sufficient size and affluence to form a congregation with a functional synagogue and, while their histories have been previously neglected in favor of Jewish populations in larger cities, their stories are important in understanding Scottish Jewry and British history as a whole. Drawn from numerous primary sources, the history of Jews in Scotland is traced from the earliest rumors to the present.

Book Synopsis Classical Caledonia by : Montgomery Alan Montgomery
Download or read book Classical Caledonia written by Montgomery Alan Montgomery and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on early modern attitudes towards Scotland's ancient past and looks in particular at the ways in which this past was not only misunderstood, but also manipulated in attempts to create a patriotic history for the nation. Adding a new perspective on the formation of Scotland's national identity, the book documents a century-long, often heated debate regarding the extent of Roman influence north of Hadrian's Wall. By exploring the lives and writings of antiquarians, poets and Enlightenment thinkers, it aims to uncover the political, patriotic and intellectual influences which fuelled this debate. Rome versus Caledonia will cast light on a rarely discussed aspect of Scotland's historiography, one which played a vital role in establishing early modern notions of 'Scottishness' at a time when Scotland was coming to terms with radical and traumatic changes to its position within Britain and the wider world.

Book Synopsis Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland by : Harold Williams
Download or read book Geology of the Appalachian—Caledonian Orogen in Canada and Greenland written by Harold Williams and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the Canadian Appalachian region. The chapter on the East Greenland Caledonides stands alone and there is no attempt to integrate the geological accounts of the two far removed regions. Rocks of the Canadian Appalachian region are described under four broad temporal divisions: lower Paleozoic and older, middle Paleozoic, upper Paleozoic, and Mesozoic. The rocks of these temporal divisions define geographic zones, belts, basins, and graben, respectively. The area is of special interest because so many modern concepts of mountain building are based on Appalachian rocks & structures.
