Book excerpt: Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thacker's Guide to Calcutta In writing the present work, I have kept in view t-he needs of Calcutta residents who wish to familiarise themselves with the story of their great city and of visitors who will naturally ask to be shown objects of interest peculiar to the place. It has not seemed worth either my readers while or my own to enter into descriptions of those commonplace buildings of public utility which may be found in every city, or to send the stranger in search of what he can see every day in his native land. It will be observed that the present book is an humble imitation of the justly famous guide-books of the late Augustus Hare. Following the example of that admirable cicerone, I have, whenever a place or an event has been already well described, preferred to quote the author's words rather than to appropriate his matter and by re-setting his phrases make it appear to be my own. To many persons I am under a deep obligation for advice and valuable suggestions. It would be difficult to say how deeply I am indebted to Lord Curzon of Kedleston for the kindly interest he has taken in my work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History and Growth of Calcutta The (lav when Job Charnock, sitting under the shade of a big peepul tree at a place now known as Baitackkhana Bazar, smoked meditativelv his favourite hooks]: and selected Calcutta as a most convenient site for the trading purposes of the English merchants, whose agent he then was, little did he calculate that he was practically laying the foundation of a great Empire for his countrymen. Their sole object then was to shake the golden pagoda tree, which, according to a i'vestern superstition, was supposed to grow and flourish in Indian soil. Little (lid Job Charnock anticipate the consequences of his decision. It is a hazardous task to calculate the destinies of nations. Behind the veil of futurity many forces are at work, which even a deep and penetrative mind is unable to fathom. In preper season they become manifest, when, so to speak, they attain their full maturity and development. I'vhen Job Charnock made his choice, it was remote even from the dreams of the most farsighted man that Calcutta would become the capital of the British Indian Empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beverleys: A Story of Calcutta Philippa had been out in India a good many years. Seven children had been born to her, from each of whom, one after the other, she had been obliged to sever herself with a mighty wrench. Until this last year there had always been one child young enough to stay with her; but Biddy, the baby, was five, and Philippa, in a real agony, had left the last precious one with its grandfather in England, knowing it dan gerons to the child's health to keep it any longer in a hot climate. It was a terrible blow to her; no one, from her haughty and self-contained demeanor, suspected how terrible. And although she had never up to this time swerved from her fidelity to Barney, who, to say truth, was not exactly the man to be cast loose on his own recognizances in a gay country like India, Philippa was fast losing her steadfastness, and her self-control too, and showed her utter weariness of spirit by ordinary apathy to most persons and things, and now and then extraor dinary severity to Barney. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser’s vast epic poem The Faerie Queene is the most challenging masterpiece in early modern literature and is praised as the work most representative of the Elizabethan age. In it he fused traditions of medieval romance and classical epic, his religious and political allegory creating a Protestant alternative to the Catholic romances rejected by humanists and Puritans. The poem was later made over as children’s literature, retold in lavish volumes and schoolbooks and appreciated in pedagogical studies and literary histories. Distinguished writers for children simplified the stories and noted artists illustrated them. Children were less encouraged to consider the allegory than to be inspired to the moral virtues. This book studies The Faerie Queene’s many adaptations for a young audience in order to provide a richer understanding of both the original and adapted texts.
