Book Synopsis Atomic and Molecular Manipulation by :
Download or read book Atomic and Molecular Manipulation written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work with individual atoms and molecules aims to demonstrate that miniaturized electronic, optical, magnetic, and mechanical devices can operate ultimately even at the level of a single atom or molecule. As such, atomic and molecular manipulation has played an emblematic role in the development of the field of nanoscience. New methods based on the use of the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) have been developed to characterize and manipulate all the degrees of freedom of individual atoms and molecules with an unprecedented precision. In the meantime, new concepts have emerged to design molecules and substrates having specific optical, mechanical and electronic functions, thus opening the way to the fabrication of real nano-machines. Manipulation of individual atoms and molecules has also opened up completely new areas of research and knowledge, raising fundamental questions of "Optics at the atomic scale", "Mechanics at the atomic scale", Electronics at the atomic scale", "Quantum physics at the atomic scale", and "Chemistry at the atomic scale". This book aims to illustrate the main aspects of this ongoing scientific adventure and to anticipate the major challenges for the future in "Atomic and molecular manipulation" from fundamental knowledge to the fabrication of atomic-scale devices. - Provides a broad overview of the field to aid those new and entering into this research area - Presents a review of the historical development and evolution of the field - Offers a clear personalized view of current scanning probe microscopy research from world experts
Book Synopsis The Radiological Accident in Goiânia by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book The Radiological Accident in Goiânia written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government and authorities in Brazil were faced with a tragic accident in Goiânia resulting from the misuse of a strongly radioactive medical teletherapy source not under radiation protection surveillance. The present report is divided into four parts: a chronology of destruction of the source, discovery of the accident and initial response; a description of the human consequences and the dosimetry and treatment of seriously exposed and contaminated persons; an account of the assessment of the environmental contamination and the remedial actions taken; and observations and recommendations. Appendices and annexes give an assessment of the effectiveness of international co-operation in the emergency response, and provide further information on: public communications; radiological survey equipment; guidelines for the discharge of patients; radiological protection; chemical decontamination; and the lessons learned.

Book Synopsis Soil and Sediment Remediation by : Piet Lens
Download or read book Soil and Sediment Remediation written by Piet Lens and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil and Sediment Remediation discusses in detail a whole set of remediative technologies currently available to minimise their impact. Technologies for the treatment of soils and sediments in-situ (landfarming, bioscreens, bioventing, nutrient injection, phytoremediation) and ex-situ (landfarming, bio-heap treatment, soil suspension reactor) will be discussed. The microbiological, process technological and socio-economical aspects of these technologies will be addressed. Special attention will be given to novel biotechnological processes that utilise sulfur cycle conversions, e.g. sulfur and heavy metal removal from soils. Also the potential of phytoremediation will be highlighted. In addition, treatment schemes for the clean-up of polluted megasites, e.g. harbours and Manufactured Gaswork Plants (MGP), will be elaborated. The aim of Soil and Sediment Remediation is to introduce the reader in: the biogeochemical characteristics of soil and sediments- new techniques to study soil/sediment processes (molecular probes, microelectrodes, NMR) clean up technologies for soils polluted with organic (PAH, NAPL, solvents) or inorganic (heavy metals) pollutants- preventative and remediative strategies and technologies available in environmental engineering novel process applications and bioreactor designs for bioremediation the impact of soil pollution on society and its economic importance.

Book Synopsis Cost-benefit Aspects of Food Irradiation Processing by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Cost-benefit Aspects of Food Irradiation Processing written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium jointly organized by the IAEA, FAO and WHO, Aix-en-Provence, 1-5 March 1993. Natural isotopes are among the most powerful tools for investigating past and current environmental changes. The purpose of the symposium was to evaluate the costs and benefits of irradiation for treating various food items either alone or in combination with other processes. The evaluation covered applications of the technology in terms of reducing food losses as well as the possible economic impact of irradiation in controlling or reducing certain food-borne illnesses and in expanding trade in certain food items. Discussion focused on the economic benefits of irradiation to control a number of food-borne diseases, especially those originating from the consumption of food of animal origin, and on the potential economic benefit from radiation as a quarantine treatment for fresh fruits and vegetables.
