Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents theoretical calculations of the behavior of two-hinged circular arches deflecting in their own plane and subjected to static and dynamic loads distributed uniformly over a portion of the arches. The solutions are obtained by reducing the structural description of the continuous arch to an approximate system having a finite number of degrees of freedom. The numerical results predict the behavior in and beyond the elastic range of the circular arches. The parameters describing the geometry, stiffness, and other physical characteristics of the arch were selected to represent the actual arches tested in the blast simulator at the U.S. Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory. The arches tested were fabricated from 4MI3.0 section with two strips welded to the top flanges. The radii of arches were 96.0 inches to the center lines of thin cross-sections and the central angles were about 97 degrees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four pinned-base steel arches with a 96-inch radius, 143.8-inch span, and uniform cross section were cold-rolled from 4M13 sections and tested under various static and dynamic loads uniformly distributed over one-half the arc length. A maximum static load of 72,000 pounds was applied by the NCEL blast simulator using compressed air. A dynamic peak load of 64,000 pounds was attained by detonating Primacord in the blast simulator. The blast loading had a rise time of about 3 milliseconds and a decay time of about 1.6 seconds. An equivalent triangular load-time function was used for the dynamic analysis. The applied loads and the resulting deflections, strains, and reactions were measured. The reduced data are presented in graphical and tabular form. The theoretical analyses for statically and dynamically loaded arches were based on the discrete framework which represented the continuous arches tested. A 16-bar system was used for both static and dynamic response calculations, and a 40-bar system was used for natural mode and frequency calculations. In the static analysis, the effects of stress amplification, misalignment, and elastic supports on the response of the arch were considered. Due to the strain- hardening characteristics of the arch material, the idealized stress-strain curve was represented by a trilinear curve rather than by the usual bilinear stress-strain curve. A simplified dynamic analysis gave results reasonably close to those from more rigorous methods; the values were on the conservative side. Nearly complete correlation between the theoretical and experimental results was obtained.

Download or read book Response of Arches Under Dynamic Loads written by R. T. Eppink and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with a study of the response of arches subjected to the influence of transient forces. A numerical procedure is presented for the computation of the dynamic response of arches for both the elastic and inelastic ranges of deformation. The procedure is applicable to arches having any shape and any distribution of mass and stiffness. The distribution of the pressure along the arch and its timewise variation may be arbitrary. The analysis is simplified by replacing the actual arch which has an infinite number of degrees of freedom by a discrete framework consisting of a series of rigid bars, flexible joints and concentrated point masses. For the computation of the response in the inelastic range, the cross-sectional area of the arch is considered to consist of two concentrated flange areas connected by a thin rigid web.
Book Synopsis The Dynamic Response of a Simulated Buried Arch to Blast Loading by : Thomas Edward Kennedy
Download or read book The Dynamic Response of a Simulated Buried Arch to Blast Loading written by Thomas Edward Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method of analysis for buried arches with footings was developed to predict their response to a nuclear airblast overpressure. The method of analysis was formulated by considering the arch ring as a discrete model consisting of a finite number of nodes (flexible joints) connected by rigid bars initially of equal length. The results of laboratory and field tests on 1/4.5- and 1/2-scale models, respectively, of an arch structure are compared with predictions made using the analysis. Arch internal loads, footing motions, and free-field motions are compared with those predicted by the analysis and compare favorably. The analytical technique was used to predict the response of the prototype structure to a 140-psi air overpressure loading resulting from the detonation of 10-kt, 100-kt, and 1-Mt weapons, to a 100-psi air overpressure for a 1-Mt weapon, and to the Operation Prairie Flat (500-ton TNT) 140-psi overpressure and the predicted response was compared with that assumed in designing the structure. The method of analysis developed is recommended whenever a significant cost savings can be realized because a number of structures are to be constructed or when local soil conditions make design by cruder methods uncertain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental and analytical studies indicate that the approximate conventional theory based on limit analysis is quite adequate to predict the static ultimate loads of the underreinforced arches. The dynamic ultimate loads for compression mode loading can also be predicated by approximate theory provided that an appropriate dynamic increase factor (based on the increase in material properties) is used. However, it is not clear whether a satisfactory approximate theory can be developed to predict the ultimate dynamic load carrying capacity of the arch, subjected to a concentrated dynamic load at the crown or anti symmetric concentrated dynamic loads at quarter points. The experimental and analytical investigations also indicate that the natural periods of the arches have a significant influence on the dynamic load-carrying capacity of the arches in the cases of a concentrated load at the crown and antisymmetric concentrated loads at quarter points. The mode of failure under both static and dynamic loads is quite ductile in these cases as compared to the compression mode loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Arched Structures: Strength, Stability, Vibration presents detailed procedures for analytical analysis of the strength, stability, and vibration of arched structures of different types, using exact analytical methods of classical structural analysis. The material discussed is divided into four parts. Part I covers stress and strain with a particular emphasis on analysis; Part II discusses stability and gives an in-depth analysis of elastic stability of arches and the role that matrix methods play in the stability of the arches; Part III presents a comprehensive tutorial on dynamics and free vibration of arches, and forced vibration of arches; and Part IV offers a section on special topics which contains a unique discussion of plastic analysis of arches and the optimal design of arches..

This book was released on 1961 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of the effectiveness of the surrounding soil in restraining the lateral movement of shallow-buried arches subjected to blast overpres ures from a nuclear explosion. The theory is developed for parabolic arches with circular or barrel arches included as a special case. It can be pplied equally well to arches oriented with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to or parallel to the direction of travel of the blast wave. The arch is considered to be buried near the surface of a semi-infinite soil mass. The depth of cover over the crown is limited to one-half of the arch span. The twohinged rather than the fixed arch is selected as representing more closely the shallow-buried rch structures used in full-scale nuclear tests to date. While these structures were not actually pinned at the arch abutments, their behavior under blast loading appears to resemble more closely the pinned th n the fixed case. he principal variables studied in the numerical examples include: (1) depth of cover, (2) overpressure loading, (3) arch material, and (4) arch span.
