Book excerpt: Isentropic data for real hydrogen are calculated in a range of pressures up to 30,000 atmospheres and temperatures up to 3500 deg K. The effects of ionization, excitation, and dissociation are considered negligible because of the relatively low temperatures and high densities involved. The effects of the intermolecular force are accounted for by fitting a virial coefficient equation to low temperature high density experimental data. These calculated data in turn are fitted to an empirical entropic equation of state. This particular equation of state is convenient for describing many thermodynamic processes.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure, volume, temperature, internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy of normal hydrogen gas have been tabulated along isobars temperature to 300°K and from a pressure of 1 to 100 atmospheres. The source of data is the Research Paper 1932 of the National Bureau of Standards Journal of Research. The method is described by which the data presented in Research Paper 1932 is reduced to properties directly useful for engineering calculations. A method is also described for estimating the effect of ortho-para compositions upon the tabulated properties. Tabular values are presented in the dimensional units of the metric system. The tabulations are also available in the dimensional units of the British system as Technical Note no. 120, Supplement A.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tabulation of the Thermodynamic Properties of Normal Hydrogen From Low Temperatures to 300 Degrees K and From 1 to 100 Atmospheres The thermodynamic properties of normal hydrogen have been tabulated along isobars in 1°k increments and a method is described for estimating the effect of ortho-para composition on these properties. The reference for this work is Research Paper 1932 (rp 1932) of the National Bureau of Standards Journal of Research) where residual thermodynamic functions are tabulated as a function of the amagat density. The task described here is primarily the interpolation from density to pressure as an independent variable and the reduction of the residual functions to thermodynamic properties useful for engineer ing calculations. In addition, properties of the saturated vapor and liquid have been tabulated. Obviously, some of this work had been performed before in order to construct the temperature-entropy diagram given in RP 1932 and to tabulate the few isobars given in nbs Circular It was de51red to obtain the thermodynamic properties in a form that would be acceptable as input for electronic digital computers in more detail than previously obtainable. Therefore, it was judged easiest to repeat this work With an electronic digital computer using selected tables of RP 1932 as input. Results were obtained in the form of Hollerith punched cards and magnetic tape. Properties tabulated are pressure, temperature, specific volume, internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy. The pressure range covered is from 1 to 10 atm in steps of 1 atm and from 10 to 100 atm in steps of 5 atm. Below the critical pressure the temperature ranges from the saturation temperature to 3oo°k. Above the critical pressure the temperature ranges from slightly above the critical temperature to 300°k. See the t-p plot of Figure 1. Book excerpt: The purpose of this contract was to obtain from the literature and from experimental work as much information as possible on the following properties of solid and slush p-H2: heat of fusion, density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, extrudability, and viscosity down to temperatures as low as 2.5 K and up to pressures of 400 atm. The heat of fusion, density, and thermal conductivity of solid p-H2 and the thermal conductivity of liquid p-H2 were determined experimentally to pressures of several hundred atmospheres. Experiments were also carried out on the extrudability and hardness of solid p-H2. The heat capacity of solid p-H2 was calculated over the temperature range 0 to 15 K and at pressures up to 400 atm. The enthalpy was calculated at saturation and along the melting line. Reliable values for the density, heat capacity, enthalpy, and viscosity of liquid p-H2 were obtained from the literature. From the properties of the solid and liquid, most of the properties of hydrogen slush can be calculated when the per cent of solid in the slush is known; equations for carrying out such calculations are given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enables you to easily advance from thermodynamics principles to applications Thermodynamics for the Practicing Engineer, as the title suggests, is written for all practicing engineers and anyone studying to become one. Its focus therefore is on applications of thermodynamics, addressing both technical and pragmatic problems in the field. Readers are provided a solid base in thermodynamics theory; however, the text is mostly dedicated to demonstrating how theory is applied to solve real-world problems. This text's four parts enable readers to easily gain a foundation in basic principles and then learn how to apply them in practice: Part One: Introduction. Sets forth the basic principles of thermodynamics, reviewing such topics as units and dimensions, conservation laws, gas laws, and the second law of thermodynamics. Part Two: Enthalpy Effects. Examines sensible, latent, chemical reaction, and mixing enthalpy effects. Part Three: Equilibrium Thermodynamics. Addresses both principles and calculations for phase, vapor-liquid, and chemical reaction equilibrium. Part Four: Other Topics. Reviews such important issues as economics, numerical methods, open-ended problems, environmental concerns, health and safety management, ethics, and exergy. Throughout the text, detailed illustrative examples demonstrate how all the principles, procedures, and equations are put into practice. Additional practice problems enable readers to solve real-world problems similar to the ones that they will encounter on the job. Readers will gain a solid working knowledge of thermodynamics principles and applications upon successful completion of this text. Moreover, they will be better prepared when approaching/addressing advanced material and more complex problems.
