Book Synopsis Arrested Development and Philosophy by : Kristopher G. Phillips
Download or read book Arrested Development and Philosophy written by Kristopher G. Phillips and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT AND PHILOSOPHY Is George Michael’s crush on his cousin unnatural? Is it immoral for Lindsay to lie about stealing clothes to hide her job? Is Gob better off living his life in bad faith? What inferences can we draw from Tobias’s double-entendres? Are the pictures really of bunkers or balls? The Bluth family’s faults, foibles, and character flaws are so excruciatingly familiar that we squirm in painful recognition of the outrageous impulses that we all have but would never act on. The Bluths seem utterly unaware of the gaping distance between their behavior and accepted social norms. Lurking behind this craziness are large moral and philosophical issues to be explored. From Plato to Aristotle, from Descartes to Marx, Arrested Development and Philosophy draws from great philosophical minds to shed new light on the show’s key questions and captivating themes, including the nature of self-knowledge and happiness, business ethics and capitalist alienation, social class, the role of error in character development, and much more.
Book Synopsis A State of Arrested Development by : Kristin M. Barton
Download or read book A State of Arrested Development written by Kristin M. Barton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most critically-acclaimed television series of all time, Arrested Development is widely hailed as a cutting-edge comedy that broke the traditional sitcom mold. The winner of six Emmys, the series was canceled by Fox in 2006, only to be revived in 2013 via Netflix's streaming service. Beyond its innovative approach to storytelling, the series lampooned contemporary American culture, holding up an unflattering mirror to modern society. This collection of new essays explores how the show addressed issues such as wealth and poverty, race, environmentalism and family relationships. Focusing on the show's iconic characters, the essays also consider Arrested Development as it stands next to such works of fiction as Hamlet, The Godfather and the writings of Kafka. Also covered is the show's reinvention of the sitcom genre, and what its revival on Netflix means for the future of television.

Book Synopsis 'You Should See Yourself' by : Vincent Brook
Download or read book 'You Should See Yourself' written by Vincent Brook and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-24 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few decades have seen a remarkable surge in Jewish influences on American culture. Entertainers and artists such as Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Allegra Goodman, and Tony Kushner have heralded new waves of television, film, literature, and theater; a major klezmer revival is under way; bagels are now as commonplace as pizza; and kabbalah has become as cool as crystals. Does this broad range of cultural expression accurately reflect what it means to be Jewish in America today? Bringing together fourteen new essays by leading scholars, You Should See Yourself examines the fluctuating representations of Jewishness in a variety of areas of popular culture and high art, including literature, the media, film, theater, music, dance, painting, photography, and comedy. Contributors explore the evolution that has taken place within these cultural forms and how we can best explain these changes. Are variations in our understanding of Jewishness the result of general phenomena such as multiculturalism, politics, and postmodernism, or are they the product of more specifically Jewish concerns such as the intermarriage/continuity crisis, religious renewal, and relations between the United States and Israel? Accessible to students and general readers alike, this volume takes an important step toward advancing the discussion of Jewish cultural influences in this country.

Book Synopsis I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by : Maya Angelou
Download or read book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings written by Maya Angelou and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide. Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”—James Baldwin From the Paperback edition.

Book Synopsis Delinking, Relinking, and Linking Writing and Rhetorics by : Marohang Limbu

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for this book This is much anticipated book that investigates a less explored area of rhetoric and writing in a non-Western and indigenous context. Well-crafted arguments from Dr. Marohang Limbu’s comprehensive research help build a strong and compelling case to study indigenous identities from a thought-provoking perspective. – Yowei Kang, PhD, Assistant Professor National Taiwan Ocean University, Taiwan This is an important and ambitious work that crosses linguistic, cultural, and geographic boundaries. In doing this transdisciplinary scholarship, Limbu is making key contributions to indigenous and scholarly communities. In bridging these areas, his scholarship informs work in writing and language studies, cultural rhetorics, and globalization. – Steven Fraiberg, PhD, Associate Professor Michigan State University, USA The book, based on the fieldwork in four countries (Nepal, India, UK, and USA) across four continents, on the development of Sirijanga script and Limbu culture and history promises to bring deep insights, relying on oral history, archival and archeological research, and interviews, on how culture and traditions of an indigenous people survived inhospitable political regimes in Nepal and India, and how the community and network of activists across contingents are working to preserve and expand it after the advent of open political regimes in South Asia. – Mahendra Lawoti, PhD, Professor Western Michigan University, USA Limbu’s groundbreaking book informs indigenous rhetorics and provides a new methodology for ethnohistorical research. Scholars looking to understand how to ground their research in indigenous contexts can employ his “delinking, relinking and linking” methodology to connect with various populations. Limbu’s historical uncovering of Himalayan Yakthung writing traditions, oral history, and culture makes the case that global digital communities can help span local, regional, and transnational contexts and inform indigenous rhetorics in surprising new ways. – Gustav Verhulsdonck, PhD, Assistant Professor Central Michigan University, USA Marohang Limbu has done a superb job at canvassing his own delinking, relinking, and linking theory in Yakthung’s writing, rhetoric, and customary traditions, and this book adds a milestone and becomes invaluable asset in the history of Yakthung writing and rhetorics. – Ambar J. Limbu, Associate Professor Tribhuvan University, Nepal This book is an extremely rich, immensely persuasive, and utterly compelling piece of substantive Yakthung writing and rhetoric documentation, including analyses and interpretations. It demonstrates the immense power of Marohang’s delinking, relinking, and linking theory in the context of the 21st century both in academic and popular cultures. – Govinda B. Tumbahang, PhD, Former Governor Region No. 1, Nepal Marohang Limbu has explored Yakthung Indigenous historical cultural artifacts, oral texts, and documents and analyzed and interpreted the way they have never been done until the 21st century. This book will contribute a lot and will add a milestone in the history of Himalayan Yakthung Indigenous studies. – Arjun Limbu, Associate Professor Limbuwan Study Center, Nepal Marohang Limbu’s book is judicious, informed, and incisive, inviting the enthusiast into a serious of critical engagement with even the most difficult selections while avoiding the simplistic categories that mar too many anthologies. In this book, Limbu makes compelling arguments on the exploration, interpretation, and documentation of Himalayan Indigenous writing and rhetorics ever anybody has done to the ground reality.
Book Synopsis Imagining the Human Condition in Medieval Rome by : KristinB. Aavitsland
Download or read book Imagining the Human Condition in Medieval Rome written by KristinB. Aavitsland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first monograph on the Vita Humana cycle at Tre Fontane, this book includes an overview of the medieval history of the Roman Cistercian abbey and its architecture, as well as a consideration of the political and cultural standing of the abbey both within Papal Rome and within the Cistercian order. Furthermore, it considers the commission of the fresco cycle, the circumstances of its making, and its position within the art historical context of the Roman Duecento. Examining the unusual blend of images in the Vita Humana cycle, this study offers a more nuanced picture of the iconographic repertoire of medieval art. Since the discovery of the frescoes in the 1960s, the iconographic programme of the cycle has remained mysterious, and an adequate analysis of the Vita Humana cycle as a whole has so far been lacking. Kristin B. Aavitsland covers this gap in the scholarship on Roman art circa 1300, and also presents the first interpretative discussion of the frescoes that is up-to-date with the architectural investigations undertaken in the monastery around 2000. Aavitsland proposes a rationale behind the conception of the fresco cycle, thereby providing a key for understanding its iconography and shedding new light on thirteenth-century Cistercian culture.
