Plinii Caecilii Secundi Epistulae: Ad Traianum Imperatorem Cum Eiusdem Responsis Pliny's Letters to Trajan have little share in the literary interest of his other correspondence, and they have hitherto received comparatively scanty attention from editors and scholars. And indeed they would probably have received still less but for the famous letter on the subject of the Christians, contained among them. They have, however, a decided interest and importance of their own. They show us the actual working of the Roman provincial administration, though doubtless under somewhat exceptional circumstances, and in a province of secondary importance. The governors of Bithynia were not concerned with properly imperial interests; they had no important frontier to defend, and no dealings with threatening barbarian tribes. But the routine business, dealing often with petty and trivial matters, the financial disorders, the local jealousies, of which we get here and there in these letters a glimpse, and not least the Suspicious oversight over the local collegia, are, there is every reason to believe, typical of many, if not of most, of the Roman provinces. In the notes to the Letters the attempt has been made, where possible, to refer the procedure of the legatus on the one hand, and the rescripts of the emperor on the other, to the general rules which guided the administration of the provinces. It seems indeed desirable that the wealth of information collected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The study of the Roman Empire has changed dramatically in the last century, with significant emphasis now placed on understanding the experiences of subject populations, rather than a sole focus on the Roman imperial elites. Local experiences, and interactions between periphery and centre, are an intrinsic component in our understanding of the empire's function over and against the earlier, top-down model. But where does law fit into this new, decentralized picture of empire? This volume brings together internationally renowned scholars from both legal and historical backgrounds to study the operation of law in each region of the Roman Empire, from Britain to Egypt, from the first century BCE to the end of the third century CE. Regional specificities are explored in detail alongside the emergence of common themes and activities in a series of case studies that together reveal a new and wide-ranging picture of law in the Roman Empire, balancing the practicalities of regional variation with the ideological constructs of law and empire.

Book excerpt: “A wonderfully rich, witty, insightful, and wide-ranging portrait of the two Plinys and their world.”—Sarah Bakewell, author of How to Live When Pliny the Elder perished at Stabiae during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, he left behind an enormous compendium of knowledge, his thirty-seven-volume Natural History, and a teenaged nephew who revered him as a father. Grieving his loss, Pliny the Younger inherited the Elder’s notebooks—filled with pearls of wisdom—and his legacy. At its heart, The Shadow of Vesuvius is a literary biography of the younger man, who would grow up to become a lawyer, senator, poet, collector of villas, and chronicler of the Roman Empire from the dire days of terror under Emperor Domitian to the gentler times of Emperor Trajan. A biography that will appeal to lovers of Mary Beard books, it is also a moving narrative about the profound influence of a father figure on his adopted son. Interweaving the younger Pliny’s Letters with extracts from the Elder’s Natural History, Daisy Dunn paints a vivid, compellingly readable portrait of two of antiquity’s greatest minds.
