Book excerpt: Activation and Functionalization of C-H Bonds explores recent developments in the reaction chemistry of solution-phase transition-metal based systems with simple hydrocarbons and with more complex organic molecules. More than 20 internationally leading research groups contributed to this volume, and their chapters cover such topics as fundamental theoretical and mechanistic studies of C-H bond activation by metal complexes, catalytic systems for alkane functionalization, and new applications in synthetic organic chemistry. An introductory chapter offers an overview of stoichiometric and catalytic reactions of C-H bonds with transition metal complexes. The C-H bond is the most widespread linkage in organic chemistry, present in virtually every organic molecule. Unfortunately, C-H bonds are famously resistant to selective chemical transformations. The development of methods for their selective transformations has enormous potential value in fields ranging from the chemistry of fuels (for example, the conversion of methane to methanol) to the synthesis of the most complex organic molecules.

Book excerpt: Direct methods for the transformation of alkanes into alcohols, alkenes, amines and other functionalized products would have a great impact on industrial processes. In this thesis the work described is aimed at developing electrophilic Rh and Ir systems to promote C-H bond activation and functionalization of alkanes and arenes. Several approaches have been taken to prepare the target complex [Tp*Ir(OH2)3]+ (Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazoyl)borate). While this species has not been synthesized, C-N coupling between ethylene and N-iodosuccinimide has been observed during the course of this study and is promoted by Tp*Ir(C2H4)2. Electrophilic Rh and Ir complexes bearing dimethylbutadiene (DMB) ligands have been found to be poor species for C-H activation due to low stability at elevated temperatures. Interestingly, formation of the unique five-coordinate [(DMB)Ir(COE)Cl]2 dimer has been observed. Alkane dehydrogenation using ([superscript dm]Phebox)Ir(OAc)2(OH2) ([superscript dm]Phebox = 2,6-bis(4,4-dimethyloxazolinyl)-3,5-dimethylphenyl) is promoted at 200 °C and results in quantitative formation of olefin and (([superscript dm]Phebox)Ir(OAc)H. At early reaction times 1-octene is the major product, supporting terminal C-H activation by the Ir center. Oxygen can be utilized in this system as a hydrogen acceptor to promote regeneration of the Ir bisacetate species at room temperature. This is the first example of regeneration of a complex for dehydrogenation using oxygen. Unfortunately, the system is not catalytic as the reaction with oxygen is not compatible with the high temperatures required for C-H bond activation. In order to expand the number of examples of alkane dehydrogenation at Ir[superscript III] centers, a second system utilizing the [superscript tBu]NOCON ([superscript tBu]NOCON = 4,6-di-tert-butyl-(1,3-bis(2-pyridyloxy)benzene)) pincer ligand has been developed. Complexes ([superscript tBu] NOCON)M(OAc)2OH2 (M = Rh or Ir) were synthesized and explored for C-H bond functionalization. The Ir analogue promotes alkane dehydrogenation at 200 °C, but is not stable under the reaction conditions. Arene functionalization has also been explored using Ir-aryl complexes. The product of benzene C-H activation, (Phebox)Ir(OAc)Ph has been investigated for arene functionalization using hypervalent iodide reagents and CO. Reactions utilizing C6F5I(TFA)2 are promising and may potentially yield functionalized arene. Coordination of CO to the Ir center has been observed and isomerization of the trans product, ([superscript dm]Phebox)Ir(CO)(OAc)Ph, occurs at room temperature to yield the cis isomer ([superscript dm] Phebox)Ir(OAc)(CO)Ph.

Book excerpt: The activation of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds mediated by transition metal complexes is a fundamental step in a vast array of chemical transformations and industrial processes. As such, research into the understanding of the factors governing both efficiency and selectivity of these reactions has been intense. The work presented in this thesis comprises results of experiments designed to evaluate the ability of a pincer-ligated iridium complex to activate the C-H bonds of several classes of aryl substrates. The pincer-ligated iridium fragment (PCP)Ir (PCP = {?3-2,6-bis[(di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl]phenyl}) rapidly and reversibly adds the C-H bond of benzene, giving a kinetically labile addition product. The kinetics and thermodynamics of C-H activation of a series of halogen-, alkyl-, and trifluoromethyl-substituted arenes were studied with a particular focus on determining whether "directing" effects play a significant role. In regard to electronic effects, it was observed that electron withdrawing aryl substituents favor C-H activation. Products of C-H activation ortho to weakly or non-coordinating substituents (e.g., Cl, Br, CF3) are kinetically more stable than those of the meta- and para-substituted analogs, due to steric crowding in the transition state for addition and elimination. However, there is no thermodynamic preference for the ortho-substituted complexes. In addition to C-H activation, (PCP)Ir also activates C-X bonds (X = Cl, Br) under certain conditions, yielding product mixtures through a mechanism that remains unclear. Several series of polycyclic aromatic substrates (naphthalenes, biphenyls, bipyridines, and associated tricyclic analogs) were also studied, giving insight into the utility of aryl C-H activation and preferred binding modes of the (PCP)Ir fragment. Not surprisingly, steric effects play a significant role in the regioselectivity of polycyclic aromatic C-H bond activation by (PCP)Ir. Cyclometalation reactions resulting from single or double C-H activation processes yield particularly stable products. Additional results included an unexpected C-C activation, and several products stabilized by heteroatom (N, O) coordination to iridium. Activation of large polycycles like terpyridine yielded stable,?2 chelates that may be of value in research on organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Finally, several congested (PCP)Ir dimers were synthesized by taking advantage of the remarkable stability of the products from cyclometalation to the (PCP)Ir complex.

Book excerpt: "A cobalt analogue of Cp*Co(PMe3)Me(OTf) (Cp* = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - pentamethylcyclopenta-dienyl, OTf = OSO2CF3), in Chapter 2, was attempted to be synthesized and studied for electrophilic C-H bond activation. Three new cobalt complexes Cp*Co(PMe3)(Me)2, Cp*Co(PMe3)(OTf)2 and Cp*Co(PMe3)(Me)(I) were synthesized. The 1H NMR spectrum showed a new material formed after mixing Cp*Co(PMe3)(Me)2 and Cp*Co(PMe3)(OTf)2 in 1:1 ratio. In Chapter 3, five carboxylate ligated iridium complexes (dmPhebox)Ir(O2CR)2(H2O) (R = -CH3(known compound), -CH2CH3, -CMe3, - CH2C6H5, -CH=CMe2) were designed and synthesized to understand the carboxylate ligand effects on the reactivity of the complex for alkane dehydrogenation. Results from the kinetic study showed that different R groups of the carboxylate iridium complexes can affect the reactivity with octane in the ??H elimination step. The rate constants for octane formation with different carboxylate ligands follow the order R = -CH=CMe2 > -CMe3 > -CH2CH3 > -CH3 > -CH2C6H5. In contrast, there is no significant effect of carboxylate ligand on the rate of the C-H activation step at 160 ʻC. These experimental results support the findings in the previously reported density functional theory (DFT) study of the (dmPhebox)Ir complex in alkane C-H activation. In Chapter 4,5 and 6, hydrogen transformation during the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of N-heterocycles with a cobalt pincer catalyst, hydrogenation of alkenes with Fe(II) precursors, and hydrogenation of alcohols and dehydrogenation of ketones with a Cp*Rh(III) catalyst were investigated. The results of the acceptorless, reversible dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of N-heterocycles suggests a bifunctional dehydrogenation pathway and a non-bifunctional hydrogenation mechanism. The iron catalysts described in Chapter 5 operate via a metal-ligand cooperative pathway via a stepwise hydride transfer and then proton transfer mechanism. The Cp*Rh(III) catalysts in Chapter 6 decompose upon heating to give nanoparticles."--Pages xi-xii.
