Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bygone Warwickshire It would perhaps not be fair to pass from this portion of the history of Warwickshire without mentioning the well-known legend with which the name of Godiva, the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, is associated but it must be dismissed at once as a mediaeval myth. Leofric died in 1057, and though several chronicles were written during the succeeding two hundred and fifty years, the story is mentioned in none of them, the earliest mention of it occurring in Matthew of Westminster, who wrote in 1307. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Warwickshire Shakespeare's Country - the towns of Stratford-upon Avon, Warwick, and Leamington, Kenilworth Castle, also Guy's Cliff - for there has been a multiplicity of books on these well - known places of late years. For the same reason I have omitted all notice of Shakespeare himself, and also of the history of Coventry town. The Castles of Warwick and Kenilworth are noticed under Castles, and subjects of great interest, but little known, concerning Warwick, Stratford-upon - Avon, and Coventry, are treated of. Owing to illness, Mr. Shepard has been unable to write The Recusants in Warwickshire, that was included in the original contents. It only remains for me to record my most grateful thanks to the writers, and to all those who have so kindly taken or lent photographs and blocks for illustrations; also to Mr. Francis B. Andrews, who has specially drawn the plans of Warwick, Kenilworth, and Tamworth Castles for this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warwickshire, the Land of Shakespeare To those who know Warwickshire well it will be unnecessary to either sing its praises, as not only one of the most historic but also one of the most fascinating of middle-England shires, or to urge its claims for the consideration of those who love the fair, open country, winding roads, and pleasant hills and vales. This county, of whose beauty poets from almost time immemorial have sung, possesses an added interest beyond the romantic elements afforded by its history, its magnificent survivals of bygone ages in castles, manor-houses, churches, and other domestic buildings, in that it is the land of Shakespeare. Around this beautiful district of England still hangs some of the unfading glamour which comes from the association with it of great deeds and great names; from amongst the latter of which that of "the nation's poet" stands out with undimmed lustre as the centuries pass away. At least - and she adds this with a kind of arch acrimony if any of the smart young persons are present at least, with all our Universities and culture, we never seem ahle to produce a second Shakespeare - do we is wondrously ductile; and I assure you there are few pleasanter sights, even in Stratford, than that of this blue eyed Old gentlewoman, standing serenely in the midst Of her treasures, surrounded by visitors, and, taking her cue from their casual questions, weaving all her knowledge and pride and old - fashioned phrases together into one sweet-smelling wreath Of devotion to lay on her hero's grave. The rules and ordinances of the different Guilds are set out in full; they are for the most part identical, but differ in some particulars: they show that the members of the Guilds were rigid protectionists. Some years ago the earlier portion of the Black Book was, as far as the visit of Queen Elizabeth, published in the Warwickshire Antiquarian Magazine, and it is to be regretted that the learned Editor did not complete his work. I can only add that as I went on reading and copying the Book, I began to feel almost a personal interest in the sayings and doings and careers of the people, who play their part in the events narrated in its pages, and I felt a further interest in following some of them in the Registers and Churchwardens' Accounts of St. Nicholas Parish, as published from the careful transcripts of mr..r. Savage, of stratford-on-avon, (st. Mary's earlier ones having been lost), and there they are found acting as Churchwardens, paying their pew rents, &c., until the item of bell money tells us when they ceased to have any thing to do with the affairs of the Borough. I have supplied a few notes for the most part explanatory of matters relating to local circumstances, which would otherwise be unintelligible to readers not acquainted with the locality, or with local matters; otherwise I have not attempted any commentary on the Book, as it, for the most part, speaks for itself. I believe that i have made a careful and correct copy of the manuscript, and even in cases where the writer has manifestly made an error, -i have not made an alteration, as I wished to give an exact transcript of the original. Wherever there is a'blank space between brackets, this indicates that there is a blank in the original; where there is a blank unbracketed, the word in the original has not been deciphered. The marginal notes have been printed, some in old English type, and some in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Burr, the Warwick of America: A Tale of the Old Revolutionary Days In the preface to "Blennerhassett," I said: "For a hundred years one of the most remarkable of Americans has borne a weight of obloquy and calumny such as has been heaped upon no other man." Since writing the above, I have found so much in print, and in the hundreds of letters received from all parts of the country containing corroborative evidence, that I consider my statement so fully fortified that it may now be received as incontestable. To put my declaration in more homely, but explicit terms - for a hundred years the newspaper writers, biographers, and historians have made continual attacks upon the character of Aaron Burr; a few of the statements were literally true, some of them contained a slight admixture of truth, but the great majority were completely destitute of veracity, fabricated with unworthy motives, and passed from mouth to mouth, from hand to hand, from newspaper to newspaper, from magazine to magazine, from book to book - and all because there was no one to defend the memory of the dead from unjust aspersions and acrimonious attacks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Her Majesty the Queen: A Novel My life has been so restless and adventurous that I go back with delight to my early years, spent at the old home of my family in Warwickshire, England. Cecil Court was a peaceful, charming old place, on the banks of the Avon, low-pitched, built of brick, with Elizabethan windows, a flower-decorated terrace, and approached by a broad avenue overshadowed by lofty elms. You entered a large hall running from front to rear, with a winding staircase on the right, the balustrade, like the wainscoting, of heavy oak, carved and darkened by age. On the right was the sitting-room, with polished oak floor, tall-backed chairs, a wide fireplace with huge old andirons, a tall mantelpiece, and a dozen portraits on the walls. This apartment was, properly speaking, the dining-room, the drawing-rooms occupying the opposite wing, but in progress of time it had come to be used as the sitting-room, and our old neighbors invariably went thither unannounced to find my father. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, Shakespeare and St. George Probably there is no subject on which the leading encyclo pedias are more at fault than in regard to the origin of the family of which George Washington was the most illustrious member. The British attempts to connect it with two different counties in England (incorrectly), and then gives it up as if in despair; while the American dismisses it in short order as if it were not worthy of investigation. Both admit that the family was of English origin, however; and there is no room for doubt in regard to the precise spot in England where the ancestors of the Father of His Coun try lived and died. The topic is naturally one of great in terest, all the more so as the places occupied by the Washing ton family in the old country are near the spot where Shake Speare was born and where his remains are buried. There are two points that beyond dispute were occupied by members of the Washington family. They may be described as situated at the extremities of a curved line less than thirty-five miles long, near the middle of which Stratford is situated. The shorter section of about fourteen miles lies in the valley of the Warwickshire Avon, the river that has been immortalized by association with the great English bard. There are sev eral rivers in England, each of which is named Avon, a fact which occasions no surprise to those who know that the word was originally applied with the meaning The Water, as Minne was by the Dacotah Indians in this country. His wife died in a few years, leaving one child only; a son, named after his father, Joseph. Young Joe was just the pride of the Manor and of his father's heart. I, writing this, am Johnny Ludlow. And you will naturally want to hear what I did at Dyke Manor, and why I lived there. About three miles' distance from the Manor was a place called the Court. Not a property of so much importance as the Manor, but a nice place, for all that. It belonged to my father, William Ludlow. He and Squire Tod betley were good friends. I was the only child, just as Tod was and, like him, I had lost my mother. They had christened me John but always called me Johnny. I can remember many incidents of my early life now, but I cannot recal to my mind my mother. She must have died; at least, I fancy so when I was two years old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative History of the Harding Family: With Illustrations This narrative was commenced in 1899, out of love for and in the interest Of the little cousins, Allan Cope Harding and Barstow Harding Miller, so that wherever the word your appears it refers to them. As Often happens in writing such little histories, this has become more extensive than originally intended, until it includes each and every member Of our American line. In the book of Royal Descent compiled by Miss T. E. Sharpe Of England, the descent is brought down to the American branch, and the Object of this book is to continue that descent in a narrative form; to relate any interesting incidents of people or history Of places mentioned in the former book, thus bringing those characters Of bygone centuries into closer relationship with the present genera tion; and to give a little explanation and description of the ancestral pictures included in the illustrations Of this book.
