Book excerpt: By Grace Alone by Ed Roels is now in this handy dual language format in both English and Spanish. It's sometimes difficult to recognize and acknowledge that our salvation is truly all by grace. We are often tempted to take at least some credit for who we are spiritually and for making some significant progress in our walk with God. We may have made some good choices and decisions in our lives while others made bad or foolish choices. And we may have seriously and humbly tried to do what is most pleasing to God when others went their own way apart from God. The Bible makes it very clear, however, that our salvation is totally by God's grace and not because of any "good choices" we have made on our own. As you study this course in either English or Spanish, may God give you the grace to live in a way that brings all glory and praise to Him, the gracious source of our salvation.

Book excerpt: This book is a US-based, prophetic-themed, “race” and culture-focused work which will serve to foster discussion on several important topics for Christians seeking to live out their faith in this present socio-political era. The foundational belief underlying this book is that we are living in an era of unique possibilities for the church to begin to make second-order changes in our views of Christianity, the church universal, and the real life applications of theological concepts of evil and spiritual warfare as they apply to the struggles of this time in history. For Black people in the United States, racism has long been the elephant in the room during most Black/White interactions on any level. Growing expressions of racism have now forced the elephant not only to the forefront of White discourse, but the elephant now sits comfortably at the altar railing of both Black and White church sanctuaries. This book argues that we are at a critical time for action, and gives suggestions for what at least some of those educational, theological and psychological actions could be.

Book excerpt: My book, Ysmaels Poems, is about adult experiences, family, myself, spirituality, fun, death, life, and going for excursions. It is based on my life and how I see the world. Through each of my varied topics, I learned a lot about life each day. I am learning more from my worldexternal and internal. It is a book on Judaism through my poems, Judeo-Spanish, communing with my ancestors, and appreciating a sunny Southern California day. I am very gregarious, intense, and alive with my poems. I wrote about Old Town San Diego, San Diego, Visions clubhouse, Temecula, National City and Chula Vista, and even Balboa Park or the San Diego Zoo. Sometimes I go to House of Pacific Relations (HPR) with the little cottages such as the House of Scotland, Israel, or the House of France.

Book excerpt: The polemics Pablo Neruda was involved in from the 1930s on are legendary, but not even the ferocity of those attacks would lead one to believe that today, a half a century after his death, he would still be on trial. In this consistent and emphatic book, the great Nerudian critic Hernan Loyola addresses Neruda's sins: the machista, the fableteller, the rapist, the bad husband, the bad father, the plagiarist, the insolent one, the abandoner, the Stalinist and the bourgeois. Loyola's objective is to review and discuss with the greatest amount of intellectual honesty that he can humanly muster as an admiring literary critic and with deep sympathy for his unforgettable friend the most tenacious and disseminated accusations attributed to Pablo Neruda. All told, this book is an impressive biographical and poetic interpretation of the most salient aspects of the Nobel Laureate's life.

Book excerpt: This revised edition of The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross was produced to mark the fourth centenary of the death of St. John of the Cross (1542–1591). The result is an English translation of his writings that preserves the authentic meaning of the great mystic’s writings, presents them as clearly as possible, and at the same time gives the reader the doctrinal and historical information that will lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the teachings of the Mystical Doctor. Included in The Collected Works are St. John’s poetry, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night, The Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love, as well as his extant letters and other counsels. More Information: In addition to the respective page listings in the contents, this new edition features gray page tabs that separate the individual works, enabling the reader to more easily locate a desired section of the book. Complementing St. John’s writings are a comprehensive General Introduction for the entire work, as well as brief, enlightening introductions for each specific work, explaining theme and structure. These are enhanced by new and expanded footnotes, a glossary of terms, and general and scriptural indices. About the Translators Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D.
