Book Synopsis A Jewish Voice from Ottoman Salonica by : Aron Rodrigue
Download or read book A Jewish Voice from Ottoman Salonica written by Aron Rodrigue and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents for the first time the complete text of the earliest known Ladino-language memoir, transliterated from the original script, translated into English, and introduced and explicated by the editors. The memoirist, Sa'adi Besalel a-Levi (1820–1903), wrote about Ottoman Jews' daily life at a time when the finely wrought fabric of Ottoman society was just beginning to unravel. His vivid portrayal of life in Salonica, a major port in the Ottoman Levant with a majority Jewish population, thus provides a unique window into a way of life before it disappeared as a result of profound political and social changes and the World Wars. Sa'adi was a prominent journalist and publisher, one of the most significant creators of modern Sephardic print culture. He was also a rebel who accused the Jewish leadership of Salonica of being corrupt, abusive, and fanatical; that leadership, in turn, excommunicated him from the Jewish community. The experience of excommunication pervades Sa'adi's memoir, which documents a world that its author was himself actively involved in changing.
Download or read book Beware Satan written by Mahmet Seker and published by Tughra Books. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a perspective of the world as an arena of assessment and testing, this masterfully illuminating investigation explores the struggle between man and his archenemy, Satan. The book claims that success in life is based on knowing one?s enemies and developing strategies. Discussing the attributes of Satan and his methods of approach, this study references Satan?s most obvious trait?his declaration of war on humankind?and notes that his deception, whispers, trickery, and diabolical plots can only be effective when human beings display weakness. The only traditional prevention is to lead a pious life without leaving any gaps for the attacks of Satan and his aids, but this examination presents another prescription for protection from Satan?s evil?becoming spiritually equipped by attaining inner and outer unity and attaining cohesion between one?s heart and actions.

Book Synopsis Religious Language of a Belarusian Tatar Kitab by : Shirin Akiner
Download or read book Religious Language of a Belarusian Tatar Kitab written by Shirin Akiner and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tatars from the Golden Horde settled in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 15th-16th centuries. By descent they were Turco-Mongols, by religion Muslim. Within a few generations they lost their native language(s) and spoke only Belarusian and Polish. In order to record and hand on the essentials of their faith they translated essential religious works into Belarusian Polish. These languages were normally written in the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets - 'Christian' scripts and so unsuitable for Islamic texts. The Tatars therefore devised their own system of orthography, using Arabic letters to convey the phonology of the Slav languages. They also created a religious vocabulary that was suited to the expression of Islamic ideas. For general ethical concepts they drew on Belarusian and Polish, but for terms relating to Islamic doctrine and practice they used Arabic loanwords, 'Slavicising' them morphologically and phonetically. This linguistic fusion represents a remarkable cultural monument of Islam in Europe. The first part of the present work traces the six-hundred year history of the Tatars in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania - a territory now divided between Belarus, Lithuania and Poland. It draws on a wide range of sources, including contemporary accounts in Latin, Old Russian, medieval French, Polish, Italian and Turkish. The second part consists of a detailed study of a Tatar manuscript (Kitab) held in the British Library. Extracts of such manuscripts have previously appeared in print, but this is the first full-length examination of a Tatar text. The main language is Belarusian (mixed standard and dialect forms), and in places heavily Polonized.A CD-ROM with a Latin-script transliteration of the entire Belarusian-Polish British Library Kitab is included in the sleeve of the book.
