Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Butterflies Worth Knowing The illustrations in the book require a word of credit. The eleven color plates of adult butter ies with wings spread have been made direct from a set of the remarkable transfers which Mr. Sherman F. Denton has been pre paring for the last quarter-century, this particular set having been prepared especially for this book. Transfers of this sort were used as insets in Mr. Denton's work on the Moths and Butter ies of the United States, pub lished in a limited edition by J. B. Millet Company, Boston. The other plates not reproduced from photo graphs are from drawings by Miss Mary E. Walker or Mr. W. I. Beecroft. In case the photographs are not of my own taking, credit is given beneath each. Two of my photographs have already appeared in Seeing Nature First and are here used by permission of its publishers. Book excerpt: In popular esteem the butterflies among the insects are what the birds are among the higher animals-the most attractive and beautiful members of the great group to which they belong. They are primarily day fliers and are remarkable for the delicacy and beauty of their membranous wings, covered with myriads of tiny scales that overlap one another like the shingles on a house and show an infinite variety of hue through the coloring of the scales and their arrangement upon the translucent membrane running between the wing veins. It is this characteristic structure of the wings that gives to the great order of butterflies and moths its name Lepidoptera, meaning scale-winged. In the general structure of the body, the butterflies resemble other insects. There are three chief divisions: head, thorax, and abdomen. The head bears the principal sense organs; the thorax, the organs of locomotion; and the abdomen, the organs of reproduction.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Know the Butterflies: A Manual of the Butterflies of the Eastern United States There are many students of Nature who know the more common birds and flowers; but our experience as teachers has convinced us that there are comparatively few that know the com mon butterflies. This fact seems remarkable when we consider the abundance of butterflies and their attractive features; and it can not be due to an unwillingness on the part of students to study these creatures. The reason for this condi tion must be a lack of suitable aids to beginners in this study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of British Butterflies An instinctive general love of nature, that is, in other words, of the works of God, has been implanted by Him, the Great Architect of the universe - the Great Parent of all - in the mind of every man. There is no one, whether old or young, or of whatever circumstances or rank in life, who can look without any feeling or emotion on the handiworks of Creation which surround him - who can behold a rich sunset, a storm, the sea, a tree, a mountain, a river, a rainbow, a flower, without some degree of admiration, and some measure of thought. He may, indeed, for the time, or for a moment, be engrossed by some worldly care, or some other subject - some remembrance of the past, or anticipation of the future; but this cannot always be the case, and whenever the mind is relieved from that overpowering feeling, the spontaneous thoughts which originate in the love of nature will be sure to arise in his soul. Whether indeed in some there is more than a general feeling of this kind; whether all, if opportunities had been afforded to them, and had been afforded to them in good time, would have found that especial delight which others find in the more intimate study of this or that branch of Natural History; whether it may have been only the pressure of different and altogether necessary thoughts that has pre-occupied the mind, and taken away, or, rather, set aside, those which would otherwise have naturally found favour with it, I will not take upon me to determine; but this much I can and do say, because I can say it of and for myself, that with me, in this sense, the universal includes the particular - includes every particular that is included under it; for there is no group of the wide-spread family of nature that I do not love to study, and to become more and more intimately acquainted with the members of. They are all the creations of the same wonderful Being - "the hand that made them is Divine." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Butterfly Book: A Popular Guide to a Knowledge Edge of the Butterflies of North America At some time or other in the life of every healthy young person there appears to be developed what has been styled "the collecting mania." Whether this tendency is due to the natural acquisitiveness of the human race, to an innate appreciation of the beautiful and the curious, or to the development of an instinct such as is possessed by the bower-bird, the magpie, and the crow, which have the curious habit of gathering together and storing away trifles which are bright and attractive to the eye, I leave to students of the mind to decide. The fact is patent that there is no village without its youthful enthusiast whose collection of postage-stamps is dear to his heart, and no town in which there are not amateur geologists, archaeologists, botanists, and zoologists, who are eagerly bent upon the formation of collections of such objects as possess an attraction for them. One of the commonest pursuits or boyhood is the formation of a collection of insects. The career of almost every naturalist of renown has been marked in its early stages by a propensity to collect these lower, yet most interesting and instructive, forms of animal life. Among the insects, because of their beauty, butterflies have always held a foremost place in the regard of the amateur collector. For the lack, however, of suitable instruction in the art of preserving specimens, and, above all, by reason of the almost entire lack of a convenient and well-illustrated manual, enabling the collector to identify, name, and properly classify the collections which he is making, much of the labor expended in this direction in the United States and Canada fails to accomplish more than the furnishing of temporary recreation. It is otherwise in Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
