Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Butterflies of Montana: With Keys for Determination of Species I offer no apology for making some of the descriptions much longer than others. Some of these are totally inaccessible to hundreds of those who will use this work. A lengthy description of a species that will be difficult of determination will be of great service to the young student. Where the specific characters are easy of determination and good photo graphs are supplied the descriptions are brief. After the matter was all in type a list of butterflies was received from Prof. Ezra Allen, of the State Normal at Dillon, which specimens have been incorporated in the work. The information in this bulletin includes reference to specimens collected in the eastern end of the state at Miles City, .the central portion at Bozeman, the southern part at Aldridge and Dillon, the main Rocky Mountain region at Helena, the western slope at Missoula and Flathead Lake. Sheep and goats are particularly plentiful and mav be seen by the visitor in any of the higher regions, sometimes even in the vicinity of the hotels and chalets. The streams and lakes are well stocked with trout and other fishes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellow Butterflies Throughout this story there are sentences and paragraphs quoted, taken bodily from a press account of the coming of the American Unknown Soldier. If other sentences or phrases occur for which proper credit has not been given, it is because the story-teller's mind was so saturated with the beauty of this account that its wording seemed the inevitable form. For such borrowed grace the writer offers grateful acknowledgment to the young reporter who, given what is surely the most thrilling episode in all history to write about, has made what has been well-called "the finest bit of news paper work ever done." Acknowledgment and thanks to Mr. Kirk Simpson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of North American Butterflies I have, in every species, made the description as short as possible, using, where I could do so, the comparative method, as being less con fusing. In order to facilitate identification, not only is a colored plate given of one species of nearly all the genera, but wood cuts are given of some portion of about two hundred and fifty species, illustrating some peculiar character by which the insect may be known. Both plates and wood cuts have, with a single exception, been drawn and engraved by myself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Flora of Montana and the Yellowstone National Park In working up these collections it was found that the flora of the state of Montana was very little known and still less understood. It was therefore considered advisable to extend the wink and study all the material from the state that was accessible. This has had results far beyond my expectations, for of the 1976 species and varieties included in this catalogue, 776 are not contained in Coulter's Manual of the Rocky Mountain Region, the only published flora including the state of Montana, and 163 species and varieties are new to science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature-Study Bulletins: Butterflies; The Living Plant The Experiment Station desires to secure the enlistment of many volunteer observers in all parts of the State, and hopes by their cooperation to be able to solve many problems of value to agriculture which it would otherwise be unable to approach. For instance, we desire to determine the chacteristics and boundaries of the agricultural regions of the State, and to do this must learn of the distribution of plants and animals, and their abundance and behavior in every locality. Suggestions of the observations we are trying to make, and desire others to help us make, will be found scattered very abundantly through these bulletins. For this cooperation we must look to the school rather than to the farm. This Bulletin, therefore, and those that may follow in this series, are addressed to the teachers of future farmers rather than to the farmers themselves. For this reason they will not be distributed to those on the general mailing list of the Station, but will mainly be sent to teachers and others directly interested in nature study. The subject matter will not be directly the immediate problems of agriculture, but rather the underlying principles and the object to be attained; not the direct teaching of useful facts, but the development of the power of discovering these facts for one's self. The development of these powers of observation and judgment will be essential to success in the coming farmer. Those who have interested themselves most deeply in searching for effective means of promoting the agricultural interests of the country, have quite uniformly reached the conviction that the effort must begin with the child. The farmer, of all men, should have an unblunted sympathy and love for nature in all her forms and moods. "The man with the hoe" needs but the love of nature to change his mere existence into a life of hope and joy.
