With one foot firmly grounded in the everyday and the other hovering in the air, his poems braid dream and reality into a poetry that is both dark and buoyant. Cultural icons as diverse as Fela Kuti, Harriet Tubman, and Wallace Stevens appear with meditations on desire and history. We see Hayes testing the line between story and song in a series of stunning poems inspired by the Pecha Kucha, a Japanese presentation format. This innovative collection presents the light- headedness of a mind trying to pull against gravity and time. Butch Cassidy, is a journey across the late-nineteenth-century American West as we follow the exploits of this surprisingly affable outlaw. Book excerpt: The body occupies a prime position in contemporary theoretical work, yet still there is no consensus on exactly what it is and what constitutes it. Contested Bodies brings together a number of different accounts and perspectives on the body, drawing out some of the key connections and disjunctures from this most contested of topics. This volume features fresh and fascinating contributions from some of the leading thinkers and upcoming theorists in the field. Themes that run through the work include: * the place of the body in theory * the notion of labour in the production of bodies * the transformative potential of bodies on spaces. Grounded in real life experience and examples, this key text will be a valuable reference for undergraduates of sociology and gender studies.

Book excerpt: From a New York Times–bestselling author and the “Joseph Wambaugh of the judicial system,” comes the first three legal thrillers in the long-running series (San Diego Tribune). A successful trial lawyer and “one hell of a writer,” Robert Tanenbaum crafts his legal thrillers with authenticity and breath-taking suspense. In these first three books of the series, he introduces Manhattan assistant district attorney Roger “Butch” Karp, who struggles to remain true to himself in an often corrupt judicial system. But with the help of assistant DA Marlene Ciampi, he fights the good fight with energy, wit, and a passion for the truth (New York Post). No Lesser Plea: A brutal murderer hopes feigning insanity will keep him out of the courtroom. But Butch and Marlene aren’t about to let him get away with it. “A page-turner.” —San Diego Tribune Depraved Indifference: Butch is ready to prosecute a group of Croatian terrorists in what should be a slam-dunk case, but everyone from the FBI to the CIA—and even the Catholic Church—is prepared to stop him. “A novel full of whirlwind action . . . Very good.” —New York Times Book Review Immoral Certainty: A remorseless monster is stalking the city’s children, forcing Butch and Marlene to descend into the darkest corners of New York’s underworld where a benign face can hide an evil soul. “Intricate plotting . . . A rousing finale . . . Frightening.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

From daring train robberies and hair-raising escapes from the law, to her attraction to Sundance and love for Butch, Etta recounts the drama, passion, and adventures of America's most famous—and sometimes most comic—band of robbers. Despite a famous movie, countless books, and much conjecture, no one knows the truth about Etta Place. In this novel, Judy Alter, an author acclaimed for chronicling women of the nineteenth-century American West, creates one of the most believable and plausible accounts of this ever-mysterious woman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Butch Cassidy? He was born Robert LeRoy Parker in 1866 in Utah. And, as everyone knows, after years of operating with a sometime gang of outlaws known as the Wild Bunch, he and the Sundance Kid escaped to South America, only to die in a 1908 shootout with a Bolivian cavalry troop. But did he die? Some say that he didn’t die in Bolivia, but returned to live out a quiet life in Spokane, Washington where he died peacefully in 1937. In interviews with the author, scores of his friends and relatives and their descendants in Wyoming, Utah, and Washington concurred, claiming that Butch Cassidy had returned from Bolivia and lived out the remainder of his life in Spokane under the alias William T. Phillips. In 1934 William T. Phillips wrote an unpublished manuscript, an (auto) biography of Butch Cassidy, “The Bandit Invincible, the Story of Butch Cassidy.” Larry Pointer, marshalling an overwhelming amount of evidence, is convinced that William T. Phillips and Butch Cassidy were the same man. The details of his life, though not ending spectacularly in a Bolivian shootout, are more fascinating than the until-now accepted version of the outlaw’s life. There was a shootout with the Bolivian cavalry, but, according to Butch (Phillips), he was able to escape under the cover of darkness, sadly leaving behind his longtime friend, the Sundance Kid, dead. Then came Paris, a minor bit of facelifting, Michigan, marriage, Arizona, Mexico with perhaps a tour as a sharpshooter for Pancho Villa, Alaska, and at last the life of a businessman in Spokane. In between there were some quiet return trips to visit old friends and haunts in Wyoming and Utah. The author, with the invaluable help of Cassidy’s autobiography, has pieced together the full and final story of a remarkable outlaw—from his Utah Mormon origins, through his escapades of banditry and his escape to South America, to his self-rehabilitation as William T. Phillips, a productive and respected member of society.

Book excerpt: Given a death sentence by the medical world on two separate occasions, Dave and Franzi's fourteen-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever Butch continues to walk the earth through the combined powers of alternative medical practices and traditional western medicine. Butch was born in Switzerland where he spent his puppyhood before his humans decided to cross the ocean and start a new life in the Canadian Rockies. His incredible talent for getting into mischief is the direct result of Dave and Franzi's inability to show him who's boss, and ultimately, Butch ends up ruling the house. Butch's trials and tribulations include a bout with poisoning, a malignant cancerous tumor, and a massively enlarged heart. It is through these various ordeals that Butch teaches his humans the true meaning of hope, persistence, and unconditional love. Often humorous, with many heart-wrenching moments, the uplifting story of My Hope Butch will have the reader rooting and cheering for the underdog canine and his ongoing quest for an extra bone.
