Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delve into a thousand years of battle and rebellion with this vivid chronicle of warfare between Scotland and England—with battlefield information. Today, England and Scotland limit their fierce rivalry to the football field, but as historian Rupert Matthews demonstrates in this engaging volume, this was not always the case. Before the eighteenth century Act of Settlement in the Eighteenth Century, these neighboring lands were locked in a long, contentious, and often bloody conflict. Matthews has researched more than twenty major battles between England and Scotland. They range from the seventh century Battle of Degsastan to the Jaobite Rising’s bitter end at Culloden in the eighteenth century. Each battle forms a chapter, explaining the causes of the conflict, the forces involved, the battle itself, and a brief guide to the battlefield as it is today.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, legions of English citizens headed north. Why and how did Scotland, once avoided by travelers, become a popular site for English tourists? In Tourism and Identity in Scotland, 1770-1914, Katherine Haldane Grenier uses published and unpublished travel accounts, guidebooks, and the popular press to examine the evolution of the idea of Scotland. Though her primary subject is the cultural significance of Scotland for English tourists, in demonstrating how this region came to occupy a central role in the Victorian imagination, Grenier also sheds light on middle-class popular culture, including anxieties over industrialization, urbanization, and political change; attitudes towards nature; nostalgia for the past; and racial and gender constructions of the "other." Late eighteenth-century visitors to Scotland may have lauded the momentum of modernization in Scotland, but as the pace of economic, social, and political transformations intensified in England during the nineteenth century, English tourists came to imagine their northern neighbor as a place immune to change. Grenier analyzes the rhetoric of tourism that allowed visitors to adopt a false view of Scotland as untouched by the several transformations of the nineteenth century, making journeys there antidotes to the uneasiness of modern life. While this view was pervasive in Victorian society and culture, and deeply marked the modern Scottish national identity, Grenier demonstrates that it was not hegemonic. Rather, the variety of ways that Scotland and the Scots spoke for themselves often challenged tourists' expectations.

The larger southern nation made several attempts on the independence of the smaller and more dynastically-troubled northern state but, after the time of Edward I of England, Scotland held its own. Then in 1603, with the accession of James VI of Scotland to the English throne, an incorporating union seemed to be in prospect, but more than a century passed before a lasting parliamentary union was achieved amid a flurry of intrigue, corruption and power-broking.

This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcases the latest research on Scotland's rural economy and society. Early modern Scotland was predominantly rural. Agriculture was the main occupation of most people at the time, so what happened in the countryside was crucial: economically, socially and culturally. The essays collected here focus on the years between around 1500 and 1750. This period, although before the main era of agricultural "improvement" in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, was nevertheless far from static in terms of agrarian development. Specific topics addressed include everyday farming practices; investment; landlords, tenants and estate management; and the cultural context within which agriculture was "imagined". The disastrous famine of 1622-23 is analysed in detail. The volume is completed by a comprehensive survey of recent historiography, setting agricultural history in its broader context.
